TO STEVE-Glad to see you put this back on the board, for those of us who were touched so deeply by the talents of this fine composer and for the people who never thought much about James Bernard and may now take it further. It would be safe to say, while of course many other fine composers embraced the film history of Hammer. J.B was the main man.

STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING-72- This effort which was one of the last thriller's of that era of Hammer had a nice score by ROLAND SHAW, The main theme vocal was a pretty number., composed and sung by ANNE ROSS

FEAR IN THE NIGHT-72- As our fine GRAHAM S WATT here has already commented on, this thriller has a solid score and has a very pretty theme composed by JOHN MCCABE.

I was just thinking about James Bernard's approach to finding the initial "hook" for many of his scores - how he often built a theme or at least a motif out of the title of the film itself - and it occurred to me "What could he get out of the title SHE?"... Maybe just one chord! And then I realized that the "processional" music fits perfectly with the words....

SHE - WHO MUST BE OBEYED
MUST BE OBEYED
SHE MUST BE OBEYED

SHE - WHO MUST BE OBEYED
MUST BE OBEYED
SHE MUST BE OBEYED

If you haven't got the Silva Screen recordings and don't know what I'm talking about, you can hear it in the first 30 seconds of this YouTube clip, just after Christopher Lee introduces himself as "Bill Haley" (!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-nDExv_CEM

Apparently, Christopher Lee himself wrote words for the fanfare ("in an unknown language" - so they weren't mine!) and rehearsed it with Philip Martell, but the sequence - which would have shown off Mr Lee's vocal skills - was never filmed.

KISS OF THE VAMPIRE-63- JAMES BERNARD gives us a very good score which includes a haunting but pretty main theme and a few very pretty waltzes along the way.It was for a HAMMER film which never got the credit it deserved, Was pretty obscure for years and when shown a few times on TV was butchered badly.

Dan, Graham, et al, thanks for mentioning the sterling work of Hammer's composers. Hammer was fortunate indeed to have had such a fine group of talent. Perhaps the fact that virtually all were classical/concert composers (with the notable exception of James Bernard
-although he was trained as such), contributed to their quality and effectiveness.

A large portion of James Bernard's output was finally released or re-recorded. Not so for most of the other composers, especially Don Banks (or even the late Richard Rodney Bennett). But now at least we have a handful of re-recordings from Benjamin Frankel -Curse of the Werewolf (on Naxos) and suites from some of the non-horrors; Doreen Carwithen -Mantrap & Men of Sherwood Forest (on Dutton) and Malcolm Arnold -Stolen Face (on Chandos).

TO MUSICUNITE- Yes, most of them were train in the classical forum, I think one of the reasons why Hammer did so much on films that were low budgets was because of their hiring practices. They made sure who they hired had the talent and abilities to do a efficent quality job. We know in the film industry that is often not the case and even if they were talented if they felt they were a bit of a pain due to their attitudes during production they made not be hired again.

DEMONS OF THE MIND has very effective music by Harry Robinson, who also did memorable work on COUNTESS DRACULA.

watched Countess Dracula yesterday: disappointing film, excellent music score

Interesting, i thought the music was alright, but not one of Hammer's better ones and i thought it was a solid drama with great acting, nice sets and good direction. But of course TO EACH ONE'S OWN.

REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN-58- Second in the series and while LEONARD SALZEDO music score is mostly a mood one, there is a wonderful end credit theme which is so uplifting and beautiful in it's own fleeting way.

No film where which features Nigel Green and Leslie Anne-Down, and to top it off, Ingrid Pitt in the buff, can ever disappoint in my book! ;-)

EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN-64- The third film in the Cushing series offers a score that has a fantastic vibe of energy throughout, for sure during the last 15 or so minutes. However the main theme is a nice catchy number, that i always hum long after the film is over by DON BANKS.

FRANKENSTEIN CREATE WOMAN-67- JAMES BERNARD'S beautiful touching score is a winner for this more laidback fourth entry in the series. The main theme is done in 3 different variations. Majestic during opening and end credits, fast moving during end chase theme and in touching pretty style during romantic scenes. If you might notice, on the cd of this score that main theme has a very pretty midsection that was not used in the film itself, what a shame. Just makes the whole piece even more lovely.

FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED-69- the fifth in the series, this well made but very depressing effort with a classic ending had at times a very powerful film score. The main theme from JAMES BERNARD played in great style at film's end is very catchy and addictive. Been humming it in all it's marchlike style for years.

FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL-72- The sixth and last of the CUSHING, FRANKENSTEIN series has a good score from JAMES BERNARD. In the pretty [beautiful ] department we have a very pretty music box number in the pub. A gorgous theme for the herione SARA, played in lovely style on violin.During the end credits we have a touching final melodic piece, that to me always felt like as if James knew this would close out Hammer's Baron Frankenstein character.I feel a semi patho's vibe in it.Here is the truth, that no matter how many times he tries in his era, the Baron due to the many sins of society, his own sin's and his close associates, his dream won't come true.Yes, right at the end of the film the Baron is determine to go on, but the audience, his close friends and everybody else knows the gig is up, His dreams are ahead of his people's time, it will not suceed in his lifetime, and for this at least one tear should be shed.

SHE-65-JAMES BERNARD did a nice score for this fantasy effort. A very pretty main theme. A nice tuneful march. Some charming cues along the way, plus a secondary pretty theme done at times in majestic style,a winning score.

HAMMER in the early 60's did a few pirate adventure films like -PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER-62- Which had a nice main theme melody and some good romantic cues along the way.Music by GARY HUGHES.

THE VIKING QUEEN-67-A very pretty main theme used often throughout the film is the highlight of this good score from GARY HUGHES.
