I Question when people say New York is expensive, I think that answer is much to general a answer. Some things are but many things that you do in your daily lives are not because New York city has such variety to choose from. Often in small towns because you don't have the variety you have to pay a higher price for something because there is no competition,if you want the item you pay for it, you can't go elsewhere. Over the years I have gotten some great bargains on many different things that it would put a small town to shame. In the middle of Manhattan I believe there still is a $ 1.00 supermarket.

I am sure that there are some very rural areas that are expensive, but there's no way NYC is less expensive than most suburbs.

I am not saying that some basic things are not more expensive in New York like California, then other areas in the country. I am saying I and millions of other people will be able to get around some expenses if your living in New York because there is so many ways to get things real cheap or even free because the quantity of things are so large. In smaller towns you need something, you will pay the full price, you have no choice.

It's now confirmed -- I've had to cancel the trip. The whole trip would have been a bit on the expensive side, but eventually it was living costs in Boston that tipped the scale. Hopefully, they will refund my ticket.

However, I hope to return for another east coast concert soon, maybe in 2014 already. I know I have to do it soon, as it's just matter of time before Williams retires.

In any case, thanks for the help...and don't be surprised if I ressurect this thread next year! smile

Sorry to hear that. I hope someday you will get to see the big apple. I know it is to late now since you cancelled the trip, but in the back of my head I was thinking since you have been a stable here for so many years and so many know you here. If everyone of your friends here send you, say $10.00, would that have helped. I mean it is a John Williams concert. I would throw $20.00 your way. That would not break me or I am sure many others here. I mean people here don't always agree with each other but there is a connection here with all of us. You know love and war and all that stuff.

He, he...thanks, dan, but I'm not quite ready for charity yet. wink

No worries, once I get the east coast trip off the ground, I will try to organize FSM get-togethers both in New York and Boston and anywhere else in the US I may go. Maybe next year?

I understand but I was thinking how nice so many people on the board was helping one in our community when he needed money to pay his bills and they bought so many of his cd's.Which really was a nice thing to do for someone.

I'd love to attend a Boston-area FSM get-together. smile I never get to discuss my weird hobby with anyone who loves it as passionately as I do.

Thor,

That's too bad. It certainly won't be tough to unload your tickets.

To the guy who said:"
TO THOR- boston is AMATEUR NIGHT COMPARE TO NEW York, DON'T LISTEN TO THOSE other guys,if you look up the population on the computer it states over 600,000 people, if they want to talk about outer population and add that on, then you can do that with New York City and you will have hundred's of thousands more as well.Boston is like a fleeting affair, no depth, How can you even compare Boston to New York is crazy."

That's like saying Dallas is way bigger than Venice Italy. Size doesn't matter. I've lived in NYC for almost a decade and it is so subpar in so many ways I can't begin to list the ways. For the purposes of this board, isn't the most resounding endorsement from John Williams himself, born in NYC, who goes to Boston every year and loves it. It's smaller yes. But for anyone with any value for history, architecture, charm, quality of life, the best universities and hospitals in the world and an influx of half a million students I can't imagine why anyone not 23 or a multi millionaire would choose to live in New York.

Wow wee, your saying NEW YORK HAS NO CULTURAL. I learned in life when something is said that there could never be a mutual agreement on the discussion to just walk away. Let's agree 100% to disagree here.

It's too bad you never tried out the youth hostel option, Thor, when you were trying to go to your John Williams concert. I was just there, and it was $50 a night and very, very modern and spiffy. The wi-fi was free, and there were cute young ladies everywhere.

Oh, and John Williams himself was sleeping in the bunk below me. I introduced myself and we talked film music for simply HOURS. He whipped out some score paper and took down some musical suggestions I had for him. Whatta guy! big grin

Stefancos and two other JWFanners stayed in a newly-built hostel in Boston that was easy to get to everything, clean and nice, and very reasonably priced. Would have more than suited Thor's needs, its a shame he didn't come and meet us all.

Hmmm....oh well. You DID have to share a room, though, didn't you, David? Or could you get a private room for that price?

In any case, it's useful information when I try this again next year. All I require is that Williams keeps it up one more year, and obviously that job/finances allow.

Mais, oui! That's what hostels are about! Sharing bedspace with 5 young men who are always walking into the room shirtless, still pink from the shower. But I can see where this would not hold the same appeal for you... wink

I think private rooms in that hostel start at something like $150 or $195.

But it IS for only a few nights, Thor. And JW is past age 80 now and soon to retire.

Well, my sister lives in Lexington (suburb of Boston), but this thread is making me uncomfortable, so sorry, no help here.

One year later, and I'm going to try this again:

Does anyone here live in Boston and willing to help me out with a night to save on the absolutely INSANE hotel prices in the city?

Boston hotel prices basically killed this trip last year.

Thor:

It's possible that this, in your profile, scared away some offers of assistance:

Over these last couple of years, I've almost stopped buying soundtracks (except for completist reasons) and used my skimpy financial resources on social activity (read: booze) instead. But my interest has not really faded, so I aim to pick up the buying activity eventually.

Sometimes one can be too honest for your own good! Best of luck. Don't need to remind you, being from Norway, to dress warm! And this really SHOULD have been moved to Non-Film Score Discussions.

Ha, ha...good point. But I only use booze in social circumstances. I think several of my FSM friends here (that I've met in real life) can vouch for that. smile

I promise not to analyze your profile or quote from it. You probably know this already but Hotwire.com is a fabulous source for low rates on hotel/motel rooms. You can book a room at a very low price in or just outside of Boston and use the easily accessible public transportation. I do not live in the immediate area but am very familiar with Boston. You can even wait until you are in the area to book the room, especially this time of year. Hope this is helpful and good luck.
