Yes, OBSESSION would be nice. My obsession however is THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER. To have them both in the same batch would be fantastic if not impossible.

And as for the concert, I don't understand how this delays a batch. Getting rights, and remastering material, is often done months in advance, often some rights can take years. Art work is handled by somebody else, as well as liner notes.

They could have easily done a batch full of Encore titles, like TOURIST TRAP, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, INSEMINOID, BLOODLINE, BRASS TARGET, SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW or whatever !!!!!

I would agree that Varese hasn't quite been the force that Intrada and La-La have been lately.

But, y'know what? In other threads people have been complaining there is too much stuff coming out and we can't keep up with it all.

Maybe it's no bad thing if Varese go a little slower right now.

Perhaps, Varese plans to shift his calendar and only releases two batches of releases a year or is it the end after all. Keep in mind that FSM has already drawn the curtain. I wish they could announce officially it is the end.

Anyway, let's have some fun and watch the Flamenco of Death

For us it is certainly not that bad but are these investors who paid millions for Varese that happy right now ?? The last LEs weren't that succesful either ...

In a certain way it is.
However the "problem" with Varese is that quite a lot of titles (mainly from the 90s) can only be (re-)released by them.
So if they won't do them, no one will ... frown

However personally I'm quite sure, that the Varese Club is not dead yet and who knows ... perhaps this year will be remembered as the one, that finally saw many of those 90s grails finally being released in complete from and with perfect sound! big grin

In the notes of the new 35th anniversary album, RT says this year is going to be bigger and better in every way (not just concerts), he goes on to say we'll be hearing music of Rozsa Goldsmith Poledouris etc on new albums...

My guess - is they'll announce when the sale is over this month.

No, the Varèse CD-club is NOT dead. There's an insightful interview with Robert Townson on Filmmuziek.com where he clearly says he intends to continue with the series but has been too busy with all the celebrations for their 35th anniversary as well as the concerts all over the world. It just won't be any time soon.
He still favors the CD-format and will continue producing old and new scores for Varèse and a deluxe edition for STID is a possibility. He thinks the market is flooded right now (and he's right..) and not every score warrants an expanded or complete edition. So there...

Thanks for the info but I must admit this is not great news. Sounds like the CD Club is on the back burner. Shame as it is the only thing that I'm interested in from Varese now. The good old days of the great composers are long gone. The latest Steve Jablonsky score is hardly anything to get excited about.

Here's a crazy notion: How about celebrating the 35th anniversary by . . . oh, I don't know . . . actually releasing some CDs?

Are you ignoring the fact that they have continued to release CDs every month for current movies? If that doesn't interest you, fine, but Varese has always been more about releasing soundtracks for current movies than an FSM-styled, only Golden & Silver Age score releases. Just because they haven't released whatever 70's/80's era score you want doesn't mean that they're just sitting around doing nothing.

Ah, but that inconvenient fact gets in the way of his sneering ridicule, doesn't it?

This might, too: Releases for current movies have to be issued concurrently (roughly) with the films' releases. Meaning that every time a deal is made for a new movie's soundtrack, work on that gets in front of work on Club releases.

Did he mention STID by name?

Yeah, c'mon Varese, it's not like there aren't 6 or 7 other labels constantly releasing old scores every week!

I'm feeling pessimistic about the Varese Club, but will wait until year's end to make any dire pronouncements. If nothing has been released by that time, I'll obviously feel even more pessimistic.

Sorry; I should have specified that for the anniversary they should maybe release some special beyond the "business as usual" soundtracks for new movies.

More material from Into Darkness would be most welcome. I also hope Star Trek Nemesis gets the treatment it deserves as it is the only Trek film other then Into Darkness pending expanded treatment. We all know Insurrection is around the corner and a matter of time. Ive always thought that an expanded score like Nemesis would make Varese some money. The demand has been there for a long time now.

That wouldn't be a problem if Varese didn't have the perpetuity issue with so much stuff.

If there are scores that Townson doesn't feel need expanding, or he doesn't think he'll do any time soon, why is he not letting other labels do them?

Why are you sorry ?? This thread is about the Varese Club and NOT their regular releases !!

What a lousy excuse for putting the Varese CD Club on hold. Is he the whole organization. Aren't there any other competent people working there he could delegate to carry on in his absence. Sorry for the rough language but that's what I feel.
