I have to say though, Thomas, that I think the Roland Shaw releases are still the ultimate non-originals.

I, too, think the Roland Shaw recordings are the best cover versions, taken as a complete lot. That said, I find his last recordings, namely OHMSS and Diamonds are Forever less interesting, though still better than the Casino Royale ('67) transcriptions ... the screams in the main title theme were a mistake and the other two vocals pale against the superb interpretation of You Only Live Twice.
I was tempted to buy the 2CD release discussed above, mainly for the non-JB007 tracks, but am grateful for the advice that its mastering, et al. are not up to scratch.
A Vocalion release of all of these recordings would be very welcome - I've been very pleased with most of their releases so far acquired.

That makes three of us saying it. Roland Shaw created the best James Bond covers in the history of recorded music.
I like the City of Prague tracks a lot, but Shaw has a certain vintage authenticity. The Shaw "007 Theme" and "From Russia with Love" main title are shockingly good-- they move me more than the originals.

Or indeed any of the other eight missing tracks?
Thanks to Stefan, I have organized my Roland Shaw collection on my iPod into the original albums with original artwork, but obviously incomplete.
I would love to complete them ...

We had a strong lobbying for the Geoff Love recordings a few years ago.
Then came Vocalion and released Love's stuff.
I am positive that Vocalion might do the same with Shaw's, too.

I've just written to Dutton-Vocalion expressing my interest in these albums. It can't hurt to show a demand signal.
I wrote to them as well. Have you had any reply, Stephen?

No I haven't which is interesting, because I've written to them in the past and had a reply.
In fact I remember writing to them pleading with them to do "Big Bond Movie Themes", a while before they actually did. And I got a reply saying something to the effect of: Yes, we do want to do that one but we haven't secure it yet.
Obviously, they did in the end.

Even if Vocalion doesn't get around doing the Roland Shaw stuff, they should be applauded for their restless re-issue efforts. They have released some of the most obscure stuff you can think of. I have to confess that most of it is not exactly my cup of tea, but the fact alone that all this stuff is out there leaves me speechless. They stepped in and re-issued numerous albums by Caterina Valente when no other labels showed interest. The most ironic item in that series is a two-fer with two German-language albums. I think even the thought of releasing such an album scares executives of Warner's German division. The same goes for re-issues of albums by German violinist Helmut Zacharias and big band leaders Kurt Edelhagen and Werner Müller.

Vocalion has issued the Frank Chacksfield combo cd Film Festival/ King of Kings which has a Roland Shaw arrangement of the James Bond Theme. As Stephen has said elsewhere in this thread, let's hope someone can do a comprehensive compilation of these recordings from the original masters.
Personally, I would love to hear Shaw's arrangement of Capsule in Space.
