Got my CD! One complaint - a notched jewel case? That was weird, especially from Varese for a 1-disc release. But the score sounds great. I LOVE the percussion with Giacchino's Trek theme in 'Sub Prime Directive'. Now listening to the great 'London Calling' track. I also realized that this is the first new Giacchino film score in just over a year! It's been a while, so I'm savoring listening to this great album. Fingers crossed for a Deluxe Edition coming rapidly on its heels. smile

Is this darn CD ever actually going to come into stock at Amazon.co.uk? I'd pay a regular CD price for it, even the new normal inflated price for soundtracks in the UK, but not the ridiculous used price.

Hah! I've been checking every day since I saw it on Saturday, including right before I posted, and nothing but Marketplace sellers. Thanks for that!

I'm kinda over this crud about "BUT WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE KHAN?" That's about the only criticism I see of the movie, aside from some other stupid shit elsewhere about too much "fan service."

Why not Khan?
Why not see how this new timeline might have affected things? I mean, it's not like that is unprecedented in Star Trek history.

At least they took some more time to research prior Trek lore in this movie, especially as regards DS9, Enterprise, Section 31 and its interest in genetically enhanced people.

Peter Weller killed it in this movie, by the way.

The score was more or less typical Giacchino. The Harrison/Khan theme is excellent.

Well said. These narrow-minded old farts should stop living in the past. I couldn't give a crap about the other films and the series, it's all fiction, they have the right to do whatever they want. Otherwise, what's the point of a reboot? Can't wait until they bring this bitching with the new Star Wars films.

Calling people narrowminded by being narrowminded yourself is like punching someone to prove your nonviolent beliefs.

I'm really enjoying this music! Anyone else enjoying this music?

...or we can keep yammering about how it's not like the good old days. That's ok too.

Nope, not anywhere near the good old days. I much prefer Star Trek 1-3 and 5 to this one. I'm not particularly impressed by any of the new material beyond the piano cue. Too much big dark action music without much emotion. Of course that is the sort of film we got too but I can still wish for more from the music. Goldsmith frequently wrote music much more complex than the films.

Unlike the film makers who are rebooting characters from 1966/67 and ripping scenes from 1982? The film draws directly from the past. They can't complain when the audience judges it similarly.

I ordered mine from Amazon, and the 2 weird things I noticed were a notched jewel case (usually reserved for 2-disc releases) and no sticker on the top of the case. Other than that, things were normal.

Hopefully it's a reply to my statement for a Deluxe Edition, but without context it's hard to tell.
Can you clarify, Mr. Bond?

No, I meant you won't have to long for people to start complaining about the new Star Wars. smile

Jeff, do you think Varese will have a Deluxe Edition for STID out before Christmas?

Explain what a "notched cd case" is. If I hear notched, I think of the cutout bin with the chunk taken out of the side of the case...that is notched to me and I am sure many other people.

Oops. What I meant is instead of the 2 bars that keep the cover art in the front, it has 2 notches, so that when the artwork bumps against it, it usually cuts into the cover art. It's VERY hard to get pristine covers with these types of CD cases. Varese usually uses them, however, for any of their 2-disc releases (see: Lost Season 3, Die Hard 2 Deluxe Edition, etc).

Perfect.

It's funny that I'm now a hater. I loved ST 2009. I hated that they went back to the Academy and then just gave everyone their jobs, I hated the sets, but I loved the movie. I think Pine owns this part and I liked the Spock Uhura relationship.

I loved the first half of the movie. (I am curious, Scotty: If Starfleet is NOT the military, then who is? In TOS and TNG the Enterprise took on military roles regularly.) The second half just falls apart under the weight of it's Khan-ness. It goes from being an original, relevant (kinda) film that even tries to address some of the issues with the first one.

Score-wise it's ok. Everything I liked in the first one is still good in this one. He used the Star Trek / Kirk and Spock themes well enough. I like Warp Core Values and Buying the Space Farm. (Who introduced "quiet pretty music plays over big largely soundless action"? I know MG did it in Labor of Love in the first one. Murray Gold has done it a few times in Doctor Who.)

Nothing jumped out at me as "Hey, that's not on the CD! When will the deluxe edition be out?!?"

I may be old and cranky, but there is definitely new stuff I love. This isn't one of those things.

Jeff, I'll complain about new Star Wars very soon. smile

I got an email from amozon uk saying they are having trouble getting hold of it. I cancelled it on the spot. Luckily i have it downloaded onto my ipod.

When amazon get round to have it I might decide to buy it then or maybe hold out for the delux. The music is really growing on me.
