There are far too many people who inhabit boards like this one who are just off-balance enough to extend their unhealthy mental state to actual real-life harrassment.
People keep saying that but has there been one instance where this happened? I personally haven't witnessed it on any of the boards I've been on. There are people on here who might come across as off-balance, but aside from the odd personal 'online' attack via this forum, I have not known of people actually taking it to real-life harrassment. Not saying it can't happen, just thinking such an escalation would be extremely rare?

Indeed. There have been instances where people were attacked because of what they said on Facebook or such, but in every instance I know of people knew each other in real life too.

My friend, you are not going to get very many people who feel obligated to come forward to relate their own occurances just to satisfy someone's curiosity, so I'm afraid your question won't bear too much fruit.
I will say that it has happened to me twice (on other boards). (There are "closer" examples, but one would have to do the digging for one's self.)
EDITED TO ADD: An open discussion about it would probably be beneficial, but when you are dealing with such a specific aspect of human nature, the required degree of diplomacy and respect for confidentiality falls outside of the scope of this board. Best to just stick with the tunes!

Since practically every subject gets discussed here at length I wouldn't mind reading about it, plus people can use a fake name if they don't want to divulge private information. Oh ... wait

Sorry to hear it has happened to you, don't get me wrong I don't think it should be enforced to use real names, I just think it's more convenient is all.
Not to stray too far OT, but sometimes I get a real giggle from some of the alias choices around here. I ponder their origins. Some of them are quite self explanatory, while others are more enigmatic.
One of my favorites (and I'm not just saying this to curry favor, because I don't know him from Adam) is Vermithrax Pejorative. Not just a cool nom de plume, but also the coolest dragon name ever.
I think using your real or legal name here should be by choice. Let's face it, not everyone who posts online is dealing with a full deck. Last year, a simple sale on eBay turned into a near stalking situation when I asked the seller if the item I bought for my daughter would arrive by Christmas. That simple email of inquiry led to a flood of nasty, rambling emails and empty envelopes sent to my home address. The eBay personnel stated they had not seen one like this in a long time. The nut was eventually dealt with but even after all that, the nut sent the item to me in February 2013! I simply marked it return to sender and sent it back.
I say things here that I would say in person. Frankly though, none of my personal friends share this hobby and thus I come here to read the comments of folks who share my love of film music. Hopefully, we all have lives outside of here that keep us anchored to reality and accountable for what we say and do. I have corresponded with various members via email after buying ot trading a item and have not had a negative experience yet - all good in fact.
I am thrilled that the discussion of politics, religion and socials issues does not occur here. That is probably what would get me in trouble.
Thomas: Your right it is dangerous and ridiculous and though nothing personal against first breath, I think it is not wise to even consider that a thread should have been brought up to make it mandatory. Starting to act like some people in Washington.
Your barbed political comments on this and several other threads recently are tedious and unnecessary. Do yourself a favour and desist.
I kind of wish we could address our responses to the person whom we are quoting. Moving up, it looked like Josh Mitchell had posted that comment you quoted (he had the quote all alone, except for an attachment). But then I realized it was in italics, so I ended up going to another page to finally find it, and it was dan the man. But I suspect that some readers may have even thought that first breath was somehow involved. A suggestion: Something like this:

In a good democracy nobody should be forced to have to use their real name on boards like this and that is my point. Yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre is one thing, otherwise I don't want to hear that word mandatory, My health also is my business as long as I don't hurt nobody. Too much stuff is going around these days. Stand tall folks .
Heaven forbid that we use our real names! But I'm more bothered when people have been on this site for several years and constantly posted their opinions but haven't bothered to provide one word about themselves or their favorite composers or soundtracks.
And my real name is Shaun Rutherford -- there are a few of us here by that name.
I switched to my real name... last initial... a few years ago. It actually changed the way I post, strangely enough. I'm not saying I was an abusive prick before... but I definitely was less of one afterward.
Just about always used my real name. Just find it easier. And if I do say something that an individual finds offensive in any way I'm only too pleased to apologise, and explain myself as best I can.
Well, when you consider the fact that your country is the most powerful and influential nation on Earth I'd say that it's a good bet that he (and almost everyone else in the western world) probably knows a great deal about the place.
