My feeling is overall Varese Sarabande doesn't have the corporate mandate or resources to go after old scores they haven't done. In other words, they're expanding things they've done before or re-releasing. Maybe it's rights or budgets etc.

New expanded releases fall into recently released films or limited editions of obscure films.

It's a slow cautious growth.

Wow, I am shocked, SHOCKED by these comments.

By which I mean, not shocked at all.

Seriously people. Varese said *A*, singular, ONE, uno, achat, etc club release. That it was Star Trek should not a surprise, but even if you're disappointed it wasn't something more your taste, they can't please everyone.
How the hell can it be a "disppointing batch" if there's ONE release?

Yes, they also announced three limited edition releases. They all fit in with the previous discs from the same series, so anyone who actually pays even a few grains of brains cells of attention should have known they'd be of similar fair.

Seriously people, just take two seconds to THINK about things before you spew things that just makes you look dumb.

Well,

disappointment = reality – expectations

The most contributing factor in this case being the 'expectations'-bit.

I agree with Juanki, but I'll look forward to the next batch. Nothing in this batch for me, but I'm happy for those who are pleased.

Hmph. Pretty poor far as I'm concerned. Varese is a shadow of what it used to be.

I don't understand "I've given up on Varese" comments. So if down the line they do release stuff you like you won't buy it to punish them for making you wait so long? Or you're just never going to bother checking their announcements again?

I don't get it either. More than half the stuff Intrada and LLL release I have no interest in. But you won't here me whine and complain after each annoucement. It's an expensive hobby as it is, and if everyone would only release great batches we'd all be bankrupt within a few weeks!

Don't care much for Giacchino's Star Trek score but knowing Predator is on the horizon, I will happily wait for Varese's next batch

I wasn’t too upset when I heard about Star Trek, for me it was better than the first so I will be getting it eventually. I hope the packaging is better this time around for this release. I thought Varese could have provided some images from the scoring sessions and/or a track by track analysis in their deluxe release of Giacchino’s first Star Trek score. Regarding their limited editions, I think the resources to bring about their releases could have used for an unlimited deluxe treatment of Hellboy à la Stargate, with the aim of not only providing new music but fixing, if possible, the terrible audio. If there was any score from the digital era that needs the deluxe treatment it is that score. For upcoming releases Varese could let people know what they were planning, like LLL and Intrada do, which would take out some of the heat that they get when announcing a new batch.

Most labels release limited editions, expansions, every two weeks. Varese maybe twice a year? So I can understand the disappointment. I may pick up two of these releases, but neither are must haves for me. If they stick around I'll buy them in due time.

This is true. Varèse is almost the Nokia of the soundtrack business. Hope they can find their pace in this difficult times for music sellers.

I for one think the regular disappointment with Varese is not just because they do Club releases infrequently, but because they are sitting on a GOLD MINE of expandable material (not just scores from the last two and a half decades but ALSO older scores that they put out albums for during that time, like the Flint scores and The Other...) This is material that only they can release, and they usually don't. Semi-recent expansions like Die Hard 2, The Abyss, and the upcoming Predator 2 are great, but they serve to remind people of how many titles Varese controls in perpetuity, and at the rate Varese has been taking care of them, the majority of the expanded scores people are waiting for from them will probably *never* come out.

Examples for me aside from all the big Goldsmith titles and whatnot: John Debney's Paulie and especially Cliff Eidelman's magnum opus, Christopher Columbus: The Discovery. If Varese hadn't put those out in the 90s I feel sure LLL or maybe Intrada would have tackled them complete.

Another lazy batch from Varèse Club, disappointing!

To be fair, only one of these titles is "CD Club" branded. And it's a Trek title - which is big news. The others are in their "obscure" limited edition line. And they are. Don't know why this is disappointing.

Disappointing because Varèse has several good titles tied with the company, and also because we waiting several months for a new CD club and for my collection nothing interesting to me, but I know that at least Star Trek Into The Darkness is an interesting title for several collectors and it is also good to sell, the other ones I don't think. Here in Brazil few people will order them (again except Star Trek)

Guys, what's honestly so bad about Star Trek Into Darkness as the ONE new Club title we knew was coming? This is only good news! I specifically held off buying the first release in the hope Varese would expand it, and now here it is, roughly around the same time many expected it to arrive. And we basically know Predator 2 is coming and that in general Varese is in the groove of getting out expanded/complete versions of their in-perp titles. Your personal most desired Varese title will have its day (still got my fingers crossed for Starship Troopers). And if Star Trek Into Darkness bums you out so bad, hopefully you took advantage of Quartet's recent sale or will go take advantage of Intrada's.

If it helps, think about it this way: the release of Star Trek Into Darkness puts you one title closer to the release of those scores you really do want. It's been said before but it's worth saying again: patience makes this hobby/passion/lifestyle so much more enjoyable.

I'm always amused by the perpetual conspiracy theory centered around people's individual greed.

"I want this score expanded! Varese is keeping it from us on purpose! How dare they!"

Varese is here to make money. Its a business and nothing else. It is not some nebulous power out in the sky that waxes and wains the tides of fortune. Its a corporation that puts things out as it can and you are welcome to purchase them if you so wish.

Hell, even the idea that they're purposely not releasing things to spite a person or persons is laughably silly. I want a reissue of Goldsmith's MacArthur. It hasn't happened yet but I also don't presume that theres a gaggle of mischievous people giggling over my minor annoyance.

Everything is arbitrary, in the end.

Instead of complaining about Into Darkness expanded how about checking out No God, No Master by Nuno Malo. This is the sort of music that we need to see more of these days.

I agree! I have NOT heard the full album, but the samples sounded VERY promising. I do hope more people pick this up and I can easily see this begin one of the first to sell out quickly. Lovely samples that you are right, we need to hear more of these days!

LeHah, you quoted me before your response, but your response didn't seem to have much to do with what I said. I certainly don't think there's any conspiracy. I just think Varese has been dropping the ball in terms of how often they could be producing definitive expansions of great scores they only released 30 minutes of in the past.
