Good lists; good thread.

I particularly liked your choice of Cloud Atlas for 2012, a gorgeous score, and it'd be my choice as well.

I'm glad there are other fans. A surprisingly good score, that one. I also like the movie very much.

At the risk of veering off topic, the book was brilliant - hilarious, sad, thought-provoking, moving and genre-defying.

I like it that this is favourite & not best. This is just fifties & sixties, my two favourite decades, obvious choices, but I love 'em:

1953-Knights Of The Round Table (Rozsa)
1954-The Egyptian (Herrmann)
1955-Land Of The Pharaohs (Tiomkin)
1956-The Searchers (Steiner) I also love Helen Of Troy
1957-None, so two choices for 1958
1958-The Vikings (Nascimbene) & The Big Country (Moross)
1959-Ben-Hur (Rozsa) just beating out Journey To The Centre Of The Earth
1960-The Alamo (Tiomkin)
1961-The Comancheros (Bernstein)
1962-Taras Bulba (Waxman)
1963-Jason & The Argonauts (Herrmann) not forgetting, The Great Escape, Tom Jones, Cleopatra & 55 Days At Peking...what a year!
1964-Fall Of The Roman Empire (Tiomkin)
1965-The Knack (Barry) runner up The War Lord
1966-A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Thorne)
1967-In Like Flint (Goldsmith)
1968-The Charge Of The Light Brigade (Addison)

Thor, I would have never expected to see ANYTHING that complete and that chronological from you. Stupid joke aside, thanks for bringing this up, I had a few days off and used the time to make my list, revisiting some old favourites that I hadn’t listened to for quite some time.

Cool list, tobid! I considered having JANE EYRE for 1970 myself (as it IS my favourite score that year, and on my alltime Top 3 John Williams list), but then decided to omit it because it's TV. Perhaps a stupid choice, now that I think of it. A score is a score, whether for theatrical films or TV films.

Yeah, trying to pick the best score for 77, 78, 82 impossible! To many great choices.

Let me help you out, Solium:

'77 = Star Wars
'78 = Superman: The Movie
'82 = Poltergeist

wink

'77 ... of course, but ... Close Encounters?
'78 ... yeah I'll give you that!
'82 ... over ET? Conan? Blade Runner?

:-D

...interesting that some year's there's more or less a consensus, but I note everyone so far has picked something different for 2016.

1977- Yeah I guess Star Wars. But then again CEOT3K.
1978- Okay Superman the Movie, easy enough, though Watership Down was brilliant too.
1982- It's nearly impossible! Number one would go to The Secret of NIMH, a masterpiece. But then you have ST:WOK, Conan, Blade Runner, among others which are the BEST works of those composers.

I'll toss in one, since nobody else has mention it:

"Troy" (rejected score, Gabriel Yared)

I'd certainly be putting Jane Eyre in my 1970 place.
Plenty of others I'm humming and hahing about. Like most of the mid-90s :-/

Yes.

The Sea Hawk(1940-Korngold)
The Thief of Bagdad(1940-Rosza)
Forever Amber(1947-Raksin)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir(1947-Herrmann)
Prince of Foxes(1949-Newman)
Beneath the 12 Mile Reef(1953-Herrmann)
The Sword and the Rose(1953-Parker)
The Egyptian(1954-Newman/Herrmann)
Land of the Pharaohs(1955-Tiomkin)
The Ten Commandments(1956-Bernstein)
Boy on a Dolphin(1957-Friedhofer)
Le Fatiche di Ercole(1958-Masetti)
City of Fear(1959-Goldsmith) - a recent discovery for me and I'm loving it
Winnetou 1 Teil(1963-Bottcher)
The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders(1965-Addison) my favorite Merrie Olde England score since "Forever
Amber"
Penelope(1966-Williams) a lousy movie but Natalie Wood looks wonderful and John Williams' music shimmers
More Than a Miracle(1967-Piccioni)
The Taming of the Shrew(1967-Rota)
Two Mules for Sister Sara(1969-Morricone) the whole thing hinges on the endlessly repeated theme but I'm still
not tired of it. Grinned ear to ear when Tarantino resurrected it for "Django Unchained"
Careful, He Might Hear You(1983-Cook)
Pee-wee's Big Adventure(1985-Elfman)
Pollock(2000-Beal)
Far From Heaven(2002-Bernstein)

Would love to see releases for "Fabiola"(1949-Masetti)
"Jubal"(1956-Raksin)
"Tarzan the Ape Man"(1981-Botkin Jr.)
I really like the soundtracks for all three and none - I believe - have ever been commercially available.

Beckford, many scores on your list are my favorites also. One correction: the composer for 1967's More Than A Miracle is Piero Piccioni......

These lists are Worse than Marky's lists(s).

Gee, doesn't anyone here ( with the possible exception of Tall Guy) have any taste?

Thanks, lacoq, for catching my error. Francesco Rosi was the director of "More Than a Miracle", a movie I've loved since I first saw it ( several times) in '67. But Piero Piccione is definitely the man responsible for its wonderful one of a kind score - music that that I've been reveling in ever since.

I'll just list a few years with perhaps 1960 being the greatest year...

1959. Ben-Hur
1960. Spartacus
1961 El Cid
1966 The Sand Pebbles
