Somebody (besides Thor) please try and do this:

List more than five Jerry Goldsmith scores that came across WORSE in EXPANDED/COMPLETE form rather than the original album selection.

I think that's going to be pretty hard, personally. Count me in for an expanded Leviathan if it happens.

Would a complete edition of this just be another example of an OCD release or is Goldsmith used to call them another bottlecap for collectors?
Does everything need to have every last single bit of music on it just for the sake of just having it to say you have it?
All of these are very fair questions to ask.
Ford A. Thaxton

This is priceless coming from a producer who's name has been attached to many expansions over the years - many of them FLAWED it has to be said. It was Ford who commited THAT dreadful Supergirl sequence to CD (with bonus tracks randomly placed halfway through the program) and THAT rather poor sounding Cassandra Crossing, amongst others.

The Leviathan album flows wonderfully - but it sounds pretty bad by today's standards. An expansion would work just as well, and would better showcase the score's dramatic and thematic development.

The movie was a lame attempt to cash in on the Alien style genre that permeated the theatres for years. Cosmatos was interviewed as saying he was attempting to make one of the scariest movies ever. He failed. Goldsmith wrote a fine score though. My personal favorite track is the 2nd one, Decompression.

Yea, that end title kicks ass. So much strident whimsy! I also love "Escape Bubbles" and that cool main title track as well. Great score!

I think the opposite. And I dont like to have all those fewer-than-40-seconds cues in the program just for completism sake.

Another Bottle cap collector...

:-)

Ford A Thaxton

Ford, your questions could be asked about many of your own releases. Look at Warriors of Virtue.... its been released now 3 times. The second one made sense, IMHO as it was expanded and is still easy to find. But the third.... is exactly the same except for apparent remastered sound.

Wel since asked in a fairly nice way, I'll do my best to answer your question

1.) The Rhino Release of WARRIORS OF VIRTUE contained only a very small portion of Don Davis's and some more a song compilation then anywhere else and is very much out of print.

2.) The Prometheus release came out in late 1997 and was around for a long time, but was always a fairly hard to find (For non-soundtrack collectors) and went out of print a few years ago (Prometheus has been selling off their remaining stock for sometime)

3.) Don Davis liked the score and wondered if we could bring it back?
The content of the existing master s what Don wanted released and honored his wishes.

4.) Since it is a fantasy film score, that has appeal beyond just soundtrack collectors which is very important to do.

5.) Beyond getting a chance to remaster it, we also had the chance to have new notes done by Randall D. Larson and new artwork designed by Mark Banning for it that I think is a bit of improvement over the PROMETHEUS which done about 17 years. ago.

6.) It's also available fairly easily now at a very good reasonable price for those folks who might not have picked up the PROMETHEUS CD.

7.) We'll also be releasing it for the first time digitally (Something that has not happened before) in the near future.

8.) We really liked the score and wanted to make sure it was available once again.

You might not agree with our reasons, but there they are.

Count me on!

A complete "Leviathan" album, with new artwork, liner notes and remastered sound would be great!

What a great score from the master!

I'm fine with those getting combined sometimes so they aren't as bitty. I don't see your list of 6+ Goldsmith titles worse in expanded form....

There is no such thing. All Goldsmith's scores get better in the expanded form.

Tough call anyway. How about a preventive list instead?

No MR.BASEBALL DELUXE, thank you. Kill all the hamsters busy with this plan shrouded in secrecy!

Nonsense!

Bring on "Mr. Baseball" DELUXE any time! It will be great!

Bring on Tom Selleck in EXPENDABLES 4! Stupid, but more realistic.

too many to mention, specially his 90s output: CONGO, SUM OF AL FEARS, NEMESIS, HOLLOW MAN, THE EDGE, VANISHING, FOREVER YOUNG, SLEEPING W ENEMY, NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER, BAD GIRLS... (and I dont name the b**ts... that someday will be released, for sure)

even some that are better in long form tend to be a little too long too (THE SHADOW, EXPLORERS...)

Well you're certainly entitled to your opinion but I think you're in the minority. Congo, Bad Girls, and The Edge in particular play better in complete form IMO. And though I trimmed down my complete Nemesis (too much droning underscore) it contains so many highlights that were omitted on the terrible original album (in favor of much of that droning underscore) that I think it's essential.

Okay here's some questions?

Is there really that much more worthwhile material but didn't make it on the album in the first place?

Would it even sell enough units to justify the expense?

Would it be all that much better listening experience with a bunch of 32 seconds cues added to the running order?

Would a complete edition of this just be another example of an OCD release or is Goldsmith used to call them another bottlecap for collectors?

Does everything need to have every last single bit of music on it just for the sake of just having it to say you have it?

All of these are very fair questions to ask.

1) I have absolutely no idea

2) Again, no idea.

3) Maybe not

4) Perhaps

5) Sometimes^

The only thing I am sure of is that the end credits piece "A Lot Better" is one of my favorites^.

I watched the film again last night. It's a blatant rip-off (or homage, I'm not sure) of John Carpenter's THE THING but set underwater with a little ALIEN sprinkled on top.

And speaking of blatant rip-offs...I just posted this on Facebook.

Was listening to the score to the 90s anime series Record Of Lodoss Wars and was trying to find a track I'd heard years before from the end of the series, which is VERY reminiscent of a theme to a certain 1989 Jerry Goldsmith-scored film.

It starts at the 19 minute mark. I'm sure people will guess the film. Does this score sound just a bit familiar? smile

Can anyone who owns the Record Of Lodoss War volume 3 OST confirm if it's on that CD? It's not on volumes I & II.

Oh man, that's hilarious! It feels really ill-fitting here, too. It almost sounds like they took "Escape Bubbles" - as in, the actual track - and added a few piano flourishes. It sounds genuinely tracked and "enhanced" a little by a music editor or something rather than ripped-off...

I only just dipped into the YouTube thing at random, but at the 10-min mark there's another thinly-disguised (as in not-at-all) Goldsmith... can't quite place it offhand. Is it INCHON?

If I got that on a "lucky dip", there must be loads more in there.

PS - And starting 2:50... more Goldsmith. What IS that?

More "altered" Leviathan ("Too Hot")

Hah. Good catch at 2:50. Graham. It's another "borrow" from Leviathan.

I haven't watched this anime since the early 90s. I have to go back and rewatch it just to see if there are more Goldsmith lifts. smile
