…I really hate it when they use a film's main theme in the film itself as source music in bars, at parties or on the radio.

This definitely would detract from the realism of a scene — if it is realism that's being strived for. This sort of practice, which was much more common in the past than it is today, put the movie in its own little self-contained universe, which in some cases was the intended effect.

Don't forget the Ghostbusters dancing to their own theme at a kid's birthday party in GHOSTBUSTERS 2. It really bothered me then, and now.

That was the first example that came to mind when I saw this thread. Ray Parker, Jr. deliberately wrote the theme to resemble a television jingle more than an actual song, though, so it probably makes sense that they would have a jingle that runs with in-universe advertisements.

Then ... John Williams, which cuts to Williams' face which is wide-eyed, and stern, conducting. The "camera" pulls away and he's got a large orchestra, performing very, very, very serious porn music.

IIRC, it's actually Desert Chase from Raiders.

It wasn't the exact track, but the music heard is clearly an homage to "Desert Chase."

On a related Williams note (and I realize this isn't a film example, but thought I'd throw it in anyway), the "Imperial March" has actually been referred to within Star Wars Expanded Universe material as the "Martial Theme of the Empire," often played at Imperial Navy graduation ceremonies.

I'm pretty sure in an episode of "Batman: The Animated Seires", Harley breifly hummed her character's theme.

There was an episode of the short-lived TV seires "Vengeance Unlimited" ("Clique") where the star of the show, Michael Madsen, hums the main theme from the show.

I'm pretty sure in an episode of "Batman: The Animated Series", Harley briefly hummed her character's theme.

She sort of does in "Harlequinade," although there may be a more explicit instance I'm forgetting. But the Batman, Mr. Freeze and especially Joker themes all pop up in-universe at various points.

A floor-sweeping janitor whistles three notes of Goldfinger as Lazenby passes by in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I'm going a bit off-topic, but that reminds me of that wonderful scene in the same film where Bond is looking through his old trinkets and we hear the main song from its associated film: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, and Thunderball. A brilliant little bit of scoring to convey the sense of nostalgia.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1999)- Don Davis

...after the credits are done rolling, we cut to the insane asylum and one of the doctors starts playing a big band version of the film's theme on a phonograph

I was right. Harley hums part of her theme in "Harlequinade". Starting about 2:10:

King Kong 1976

As Kong walks past the church in New York City, the church organ plays the same theme as John Barry's main title music. Track 26 on the FSM deluxe edition.

The 1958 war film Sea Of Sand. Right after the main titles there's Richard Attenborough driving a jeep whistling Clifton Parker's main theme.

Not a movie but Kolchak whistles his own theme song in the beginning of the first episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

Although Battlestar Galactica has been mentioned, one of my favorite musical moments from the series hasn't. In the episode 'Final Cut' of season 2 a documentary is being made. That in-show documentary ends with a sweeping janitor whistling the original Galactica theme. When he finishes the frase, the underscore goes in to full Stu Philips-mode completing the theme!

It's not the only time Stu's theme is used in a non-deignetic way. In the mini-series the tune is used in-show as fanfare for the pilots.

"The High and the Mighty" of course.

The Duke whistles the theme.

One of my earlierst film score memories... I could whistle that tune afterwards, too, and I knew the name "Dimitri Tiomkin", the first film composer I knew by name.

The janitor scene brought a tear to my eye. Seriously.

In Tron Legacy Flynn sings the Wendy Carlos Tron theme (which is exactly one time more than Daft Punk used it in the score).

Did anyone mention the Star Trek theme being played as source music in Conscience of the King?

In A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master the character of Alice has a dream where she encounters an old version of herself. Her older self is heard humming the famous Charles Bernstein Main Title from the original film.

In Big, the end credits start out with a reprise of the song Josh Baskin played on the foot piano (Heart and Soul?).

In The Simpsons "Springfield Files," they steal the High Anxiety joke and have Homer hear scary Psycho-esque music coming from an orchestra on a bus.

I can't recall for sure, but doesn't the marching band play the Superman theme in Superman III at Little Ricky's birthday party?

That March was composed by John Philip Sousa. It is called King Cotton.
Here is a good rendition of it on you tube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r3YxsHHSPU
The parts that you will recognize that are featured in Ricky’s Birthday are on 1:07 – 1:55 – 2:27.

That March was also used as background score for “The Adventures of Milo & Otis” – it happens in the film when Milo is trapped at the bottom of the well. Otis finds Milo, and drops the rope down and rescues Milo – “We did it!”
At the time, the music seemed familiar, but I didn’t know where I had actually heard it! I wouldn't mind “that” score getting a release.

As for the topic on this thread, well – how about 2 Lois and Clark episodes – both of which are from the second season.
Wall Of Sound:
When Lois Lane is switching channels on her listening bug, one of the transmissions is the show theme song.

A Bolt From The Blue:
Do the characters know they're in a TV show? Clark Kent apparently does, he whistles away to his own theme song as he melts down Ms. Venoms' hard drive!
