The only theme that Giacchino needs to include is the original series theme by Courage. I don't see the point of referencing Goldsmith and Horner themes in a film series in which events are occurring in a different timeline anyway. Plus, if I want to hear those themes I will go and listen to those albums, I don't want to hear the material rehashed in a new score. If it's a new Trek score by Giacchino, I would prefer it to be 99% new Giacchino material.

I saw a trailer in front of OZ. It didn't wow me, I thought it was just OK. Hope they do a better one or something soon. It's a given it's going to make a zillion bucks.

Any idea on if Varese got the sdtk rights again?

Good question. One one hand I hope they do, because if it sells well then an expanded might be around the corner like the previous one. If Sony gets it, more material would probably end up on it...either way Im sure it will be a good outcome. Im looking more forward to the music then I am the film itself. If Giacchino quotes Horner and others it would be neat to hear...but personally I'd be happy with something new...with the Courage theme and possibly his 2009 theme appearing every now and then.

Of course he isn't quoting Horner. Or Goldsmith.

I heard so much Rosenman music in the trailer I couldn't think twice.

I just got done listening to the Deluxe Edition of the first Giacchino score. I'm really excited about the next one!

I seem to be in a minority but I found Giacchino's Trek score to be very dull and unmemorable.

At best, "workmanlike".

What gets me is the awful pun-titles. Just like yer average SNL skit, they go on and on and on, not knowing when they've stopped being funny.

I would guess that Varese would try very hard to get the rights to the score, seeing as Giacchino is a big name and his 09 Trek score reached the #1 spot in soundtracks on Amazon. Varese will probably announce it as an upcoming title in a week or two.

I don't know. That's very small. I think it says "Muntrack Clobon of Louest Sammahiinin."

I just hope for two things. I hope that the Courage fanfare is used for victory/hero moments in the score and I hope the choir is included in the release by Varese. I think we all know the story about the missing choir from the Deluxe Edition of the 2009 score. I didnt realize it until much later. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

I'm looking forward to the score.

Also looking forward to the song and dance about how it's too short, or they cut out some 45-second string sustain, and how Varese should've put the whole thing out and put themselves into bankruptcy.

Good eyes! It's confirmed. Hopefully they also release a complete (or at least 'deluxe') edition of the score within a year like they did last time.

I loved Muntrack Clobon's last score, although I preferred his earlier funnier pictures.

From the sound samples it appears the Courage theme is used in just about every other cue and a LOT of Cliff's music is used.

Keep in mind buddy ALL of this costs money so not having the choir on the CD was most likely a budgetary issue. Varese does there absolute best, but they still have to make a profit. smile

Of course they do Spanky. Note how I said "I hope". If they do then it would be wonderful. All I'm saying.

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

Music Composed by
Michael Giacchino
(Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Star Trek, The Incredibles)

This summer, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Composer Michael Giacchino — an Academy Award winner for his score for Up — reunites with director J.J. Abrams to steer the Enterprise through its darkest territory yet.

Paramount will open STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS nationwide on May 17.
