Can someone explain the "droid" theme from Empire? I can't place what this would be.
Yeah, I'm confused too...
It plays when R2 and 3PO appear, when R2 is scanning for Luke (well, it would have, it's dialed out in the film), when R2 bobs along underwater, and when R2 is puttering around fixing the Falcon. Wow, that's WAY more than Luke and Leia!
Oh, I'm sorry. I got confused; I meant the "The Imperial Probe" (SE, Disc One, Track 4). There's a whole bunch of music there that does not appear in the film....
BTW: I agree with you, Other Tallguy; "Ben's Theme" (AKA "The Force Theme") is the best theme EVER!!!

My favorite use of this cue is heard right after Lando says, "This deal is getting worse all the time" and it cuts to Chewie attempting to repair 3P0.
That's a good one. Really good. And not on CD until 1997!
Oh, as to the Rebel Theme being used in the Sail Barge for Luke's lightsaber - it follows the same progression as the end titles - BIG Luke Theme transitioning to Rebel Theme.
Williams used Luke's theme to introduce the saber in ESB and ROTJ. In fact, other than a brief quote during the Rancor pit you don't hear Luke's Theme in ROTJ until then. (Not counting the titles, of course.)

A little off-topic: Does *anyone* know what the track "The Imperial Probe" (SE Disc One, track 4) was supposed to cover, other than the short bit at the beginning which *was* used in the film to replace Williams' original music that accompanied the opening scenes of the probe heading toward Hoth?
I gotta know!! (I've been asking in various threads forever it seems.)
I believe it's for the scenes of the probe finding the shield generators, the rebels finding out about it, and Han and Chewie blowing it up. Then it moves to the Imperial fleet. IIRC you can track it pretty well to the existing unscored film.
The game Dark Forces II used the daylights out of that music.

Added: Wasn't there also some deleted footage of the probe attacking an investigating pilot and his snowspeeder? (Which would explain Han's otherwise unexplained line, "It isn't friendly, whatever it is.")
I figured Han's line was in reaction to the radio bursting into static. No other scene needed (IMO).
As for the music not being used there was a lot of good music that got dialed out in the opening act of ESB. Good music (really good in most cases) but I think the film was better for it. I think today's SF films loose sight of the value of being able to hear these worlds as the characters hear them. One of the reasons I love the Kobayashi Maru in Wrath of Khan - It's a whole space battle with no score! How often do you hear that?
While we're rambling on about Star Wars music: Was the love theme from AOTC and attempt to tie into the theme that plays during the final duel between Luke and Vader? After six films this GORGEOUS music comes out of nowhere, thematically at the climax to the whole saga. What do you all think?

I signed in to say just that.
I read somewhere (might be Lukas' notes on the Anthology) that the last section of Star Wars before the battle went unscored for precisely the reason of giving the music a break so it would have more impact during the battle.
How much of Jedi is unscored? What is the last scene without music? (ARE there any scenes without music?)
Hmmm. Maybe today I'll sit down and try to do my LP mix. Are there any crazy mixes (or even un-crazy mixes) on the Jedi LP? There aren't are there? I mean, you get the unused Funeral Pyre but that's it...

While we're rambling on about Star Wars music: Was the love theme from AOTC and attempt to tie into the theme that plays during the final duel between Luke and Vader? After six films this GORGEOUS music comes out of nowhere, thematically at the climax to the whole saga. What do you all think?
The minor-key men's chorus theme that plays during the final duel between Luke and Vader (the Emperor's theme?) returns in The Phantom Menace, rescored as a major-key tune for children's chorus (singing "ya, ya, ya") in the big parade scene at the end.
I've actually always thought of the love theme from AOTC as a minor-key variation of the Luke Skywalker theme.

I remember being at the midnight showing on May 25, 1983, and what a blast we all had!!
(!!!!!SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!!!)
I don't think I've ever heard cheers (in a theater, that is) so loud as when Vader/Anakin threw Palpatine into the shaft and later when his spirit appeared standing next to Obi-Wan's and Yoda's. Totally corny, I know. But that's how we "Star Wars" fans felt about that saga.... {wipes tear from eye --- FADE OUT.}

Yeah, I can still remember the audience bursting into applause when Luke catches and ignites the lightsaber during the Sarlacc battle, when Vader defeats the Emperor, and when the Millennium Falcon bursts out of the flames just before the Death Star explodes. My mom and grandmother took me and one of my cousins to see it at the Cinema 150 (sadly, now gone) in Santa Clara, CA. The screen was huge, probably even moreso to us since we were little, and no doubt it's what started my love of going to the movies.

I can definitely hear Palpatine's Theme in the parade music at the conclusion of TPM, but I never noticed the love theme from AOTC being a variation on Luke's Theme. However, I don't know enough about music *structure* to comment on that particular one.
Structure is the best clue into hearing the similarity in this case. If you hum Luke's theme, saying "dum . . . dum . . . dum-dum-dum-DUM-dum, dum-dum-dum-DUM-dum, dum-dum-dum-dum . . ." an then try it with "Across the Stars" I think you'll hear it.
Listen particularly for instances of the pattern "dum-dum-dum-DUM-dum."
