What I liked about the Williams interview was the way he described Kennedy and Abrams as "young people." Miss Kennedy is sixty! That puts a spring in my step. May the all of us do as well as the Maestro seems to be doing in his eighties!

I have tickets to see him and the CSO in Chicago this fall. Front row, too! I know it's a terrible location acoustically, but to be less than 10 feet from someone who's inspired me so much? Priceless!
Good thing John Williams has evolved and isn't stuck in the past like some of his fans.
The music of Revenge of the Sith is absolutely masterful and more dramatically focused than his scores for the other Star Wars films. The big tune mentality of the 70s and 80s is out of fashion and simply the death of film music today, Williams has been aware since the late 90s and should be praised.
May the force be with him for at least 15 years. I feel sorry for the composer who'd have to replace him.
I'm also very excited about this, but it's not really a big news piece to me as he already hinted at his involvement back in February.
It never ceazes to amaze me how so many people draw their value judgements before they've heard a note of music or seen a single shot of a film -- whether it's STAR WARS or something else. What happened to open minds? Regardless if you're not a big fan of the people involved in the making?
this was in May of this year..BMI Awards...and John Williams at 1:35 was asked that question...two months ago...and gave out the correct answer...that THR announced a couple of days ago...
I will remain cautiously optimistic about this news. I know there are lot of Williams fans that like Goldsmith fans, feel he can do no wrong.
Goldsmith's last few Star Trek scores were indifferent at best - to me. Yes a lot of others enjoyed them, but I didn't feel they had the strength of earlier works.
My concern about Williams is the same. He's no spring chicken any longer. Will he even live long enough to score three more movies? If the movies are going to be of any quality I cannot see them being released much sooner than 2 years apart.
Has anyone heard a release date for episode VII? How far down the road to we even get to the first movie, much less the final one.
My hope is that Mr. Williams lives long and prospers, and that he retains the mental strength and creative output to give us three more really wonderful scores. My concern is that it is asking a lot. Especially considering that of the last three Star Wars movies I really enjoyed only the third. Episodes one and two were indifferent.
But then I enjoyed the third so much because he started weaving in the themes from the classic first three films. Which was stepping back in time to the period I enjoyed scores the most.
But even saying all the above, fact is how could they not hire Williams. He is Star Wars when it comes to the music. So I am very conflicted. Obviously it is all speculation until the next movie is out and we hear what Williams has to offer. I'm hoping for the best.

Opinions can be based on previous works, and current output. It's not a mystery at all.
One thing I would love to hear is a new main title theme as the "Star Wars" theme * we all know (and love) was originally JW's theme for Luke Skywalker. I believe such a request would be met with alacrity on the part of John Williams as it would allow him to write a score without the constrictions of thirty-seven year old thematic material (he reportedly started work on the themes in 1976).
If the powers-that-be insisted on using Luke's theme, then how about at least a new arrangement of it?

...This from the guy who automatically shoots down EVERY expanded release of EVERY score ever written by ANYONE.
(Sorry Thor, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, truly. I just found that a very curious statement, given your hard-and-fast personal rules towards any and all expanded releases. You don't have what I would call an open mind in that regard. Not that you need to; to each his own.)

Indeed. It's amazing how people are exited by a score that hasn't even been written yet :-P
