When I see a score released, let's say it's two Intrada scores that I listen to the samples, but just don't have a huge interest in acquiring, I LOVE hearing my fellow film score friends say how excited they are to get this and this was their holy grail and all of those positive things. If we could just for a moment, think about other people once in a blue moon the world would be a bit happier!
Got this in the mail today and I'm really digging Paradise. I really like David Newman in more "dramatic" mode. I wish he would do more dramas and less comedies. This is a very pleasant listen.
I have played this CD a couple of times since receiving it today. I love David Newman's music. Thanks Intrada ! MIGHTY DUCKS, SCOOBY DOO 1 & 2, FLINTSTONES 1 & 2 and anything else by by David Newman PLEASE ! David Newman still has many great works that have not had a proper CD release. Thanks again Intrada.
Boy, "Paradise" is an absolutely wonderful David Newman score! This is the sort of heartfelt, full-bodied music that Newman is so capable of. Sadly, he became known for goofy comedy scores (some of which are terrific), and rarely had an opportunity like this one. And now, as he laments in the liner notes, emotions like this are not allowed in film scores.
Newman is quoted in the notes as saying "I'm glad it's coming out." Me too!
(The Folk score is not to my taste. So be it. The Newman more than makes up for it!)
I hope this CD two-fer has been a decent seller for Intrada. It's two really good scores by great composers who are highly underrated (and under-used) these days. The broad, symphonic style of Paradise is nicely contrasted by the poppy/lighter style of Can't Buy Me Love. While the OCD part of me would (maybe) have preferred another short David Newman score to couple Paradise, I have always loved the Folk score since I saw the film many years ago. There was never enough of the 'pop' theme on the 10 minute section of the Folk/Suites promo that I have, so this more than makes up for that. Indeed, it is quite sad to read Newman bemoaning the current state of film scoring (like Horner). At least we can always look back to the past to hear well written, memorable themes expertly played by full orchestra. My playing of this CD has compelled me to dig out the Selected Suites 2CD by Folk and I'm really digging some of his old scores (Tremors is playing as I type and it's fookin ace).
Bump! What a beautiful twofer! I thought Folk's music would be my favorite, but I really love the entire Newman program. Folk's music is quite nice as well, (if not quite as interesting). Even if you take out a few of the pop sounding cues there's a solid 45/50 minute run time here.
For people who dismissed the Folk score as being too 80's or poppy, just give a listen to tracks like Thinking Of You, Broken Moon, The Target* and Rent Me (Finale). Okay, not that last one, but it's still great to me! It's as good as anything JNH or David Grusin/Foster wrote in their romantic movie mode. Amongst all the big Holy Grail releases Intrada have done down the years, this double-bill of two smaller (forgotten?) scores holds a really special place in my heart.
*this track in conjunction with the film is a helluva emotional release/tear-spiller.
Have you seen the film (Can't Buy Me Love), Yavar? When heard in tandem with the film, the emotional aspects of the music take on a whole'nother level, when listening to it alone.
It's not a good GOOD film by any stretch, but amongst that stable of goofy/romantic high-school films, it's one of the better ones and has loads of charm and heart. I've always liked it and Folk's score works a treat.
As much as I LOVE Robert Folk I also can't really connect with his score on this album, but Newman's PARADISE score is a great and very heartfelt effort, marred only by somewhat faint and thin sound quality in my opinion.
Does anybody have the artwork for this release or can anybody point me to the covers? I just realized that my rip to MP3 doesn't have the artwork and my scanner's captures are less than ideal. If I have to scan the covers, I will but I'm checking if any of you have a decent scan (or save artwork from when it was available).
