On the old GNP releases, is that original music or re-recorded? And if it's original, I thought GNP didn't license their music out? (Hence, some Ron Jones material having to be left off the FSM set.)
But as we've seen again and again, when it comes to these things, there is no one true answer forever. In the case of the FSM Jones set, what was true for "Best of Both Worlds" was not true for "Heart of Glory." Why? I haven't a clue. Maybe GNP was willing to license one but not the other. Maybe their rights for one were not the same as their rights for the other. The point is, we don't know where GNP's rights to these things begin and end.
And by the way, people have changes of heart. And times change. And money talks. Assuming the big announcement is "Star Trek" (the original series), which I'm assuming it is, we may never know why things changed. Just that they did.
Well, true -- "forever" can be a relative and nebulous term. And I didn't realize that "Heart of Glory" had been released by GNP to begin with; I only knew about the missing "Best of Both Worlds" because it was an issue that was addressed when the set was released. Also, when all of the Trek film scores were being re-released, many comments alluded to GNP having perpetual rights, etc. (Or is that Varese?) Either way, I get that money talks and things can always change, I was just curious if anyone had more specific information about it.
The GNP ST:TOS recordings are definitely taken from the original Desilu-Gower sessions. I know that at some point Fred Steiner had planned to re-record nearly the entire score of "Who Mourns for Adonis" in London as it was one of his personal favorite "Trek" scores. Not sure if this was intended as a third volume of the Varese Sarabande recordings or an alternate session plan for the first two volumes.

If you look at the Best of Both Worlds CD versus the first release of Heart of Glory, I think the reasoning is fairly obvious. The Best of Both Worlds album had the cues separated into different tracks, which is how they would have been (more or less) in the Ron Jones set. However, Heart of Glory was condensed into two tracks. Since the box presented the cues differently this is probably what allowed that score to be included and not Best of Both Worlds. Different track presentation does not equal re-release of the original album.
I don't think that's true. If it were, simply breaking up the tracks differently would allow anybody to release something somebody else had purchased the rights to. That's quite a loophole!
Agreed.
Intellectual property rights and licensing contracts have nothing to do with presentaiton and editing decisions related to the material.
A label either has rights to the music, or it does not. Editorial choices when compiling a score presentation on CD are irrelevent to those rights.

Do people think this is going to be ST: TOS?
I wouldn't have thought this would be big seller for La La Land. Lukas was quite clear that the TNG box set did not sell well and I would have guessed that would be a bigger seller than a TOS set.
I think it should sell very well given the music's high recognition factor (due to the scores being tracked into other episodes, a recording practice that has since been largely done away with). Most people who buy this could very quickly identify the episodes for which the music was originally written. With TNG, especially the McCarthy scores (and this should in no way be misconstrued as a criticism of Dennis's music, which always well supported the drama), there's little to distinguish one score from another as the producers felt the old, melodramatic style of the TOS scores was not in keeping with the new series concept. In most TNG scores you simply don't hear a lot of the trademark effects of sixties TV scoring: muted brass, harp glissandi, tremolo strings, "vibe wash," stopped French horns, high-range woodwind trills (a Steiner signature sound), all of which "grab the ear" and are thus sonically exciting. The original series' scores are replete with such musical colors/techniques/devices.
And...on top of this...damn fine composers wrote these scores.

Just an announcement. La-La Land doesn't do pre-orders and their next releases are on August 28.
Another silly question from my part: are there going to be releases next week? Or when are they gonna release the next titles?
