As for RED SONJA, it wasn't his brightest move to ask for LP's to make the master, but at the end of day that was all that he had to work with and as I recall it sounded not too bad and given it was that or nothing, what was your better idea BTW?
Ford A. Thaxton

Perhaps using the Varese Club CD instead of a LP...?

It seems as if Perseverance runs into some kind of trouble with every one of their releases... issues with source material, issues with mastering, issues with cover art, issues with licencing, issues with composers not wishing to collaborate, or composers pissed with a release...

We're expected to believe these are all one-off human errors?

Some of you guys should *really* consider getting off the high horse you're on...

Or why don't you just pull Robin out of his bed and stone him in public?

As for Thief: i have it and love it.

Yes, i do have an earlier incarnation as well. Yes, i do hear the flaws when i concentrate. But i have many *official* CD releases that have far worse mistakes/errors than this one.

These few flaws (yes, i call them few) aside, the CD sounds great, looks great. To me at least. I'm glad to have it. Thanks, Robin!

Best,
Burnie

Yes and almost all of them are people on this board!

Reality Check: When the product sells, it's WINNER..

Perhaps speaking on a purely financial level, but if many of the people who made your release sell are dissatisfied with it (particularly if quality problems were not advertised), I don't think it can be considered a winner all around...

Yavar

This would also hurt the sale of future releases from that label. I know I am going to question anything they release from now on and I will not purchase their Red Sonja, Rain Man and Thief. I have also discarded Slipstream.

Kim,

I believe that you are making a serious mistake by not buying THIEF. I wrote the liner notes and it has a great sound to it and the minor sound points that two posters have made on this board, Amazon, and Intrada among others, is not worth mentioning and does not distract from the overall quality of this release. The notes also includes my interview with composer Craig Safan and his musical contribution to the film once Tangerine Dream left to go on tour, and working with Michael Mann, along with music editor Bob Badami. In fact, Chris Franke and Johannes Schmoelling, two of the former members have signed copies of this release, along with Craig Safan for Robin's customers.

You should also read more positive reviews by professional writers such as Christopher Jenkins in the online FSM, Daniel Schweiger, Randall Larson, and Darren Allison in Cinema Retro magazine.

As one teacher to a future teacher, do your research and make your own decision based on what you had heard from the disc, rather than what others have said. The quality on THIEF is just as good as any other put out by Intrada or LaLaLand records.

I am proud to have worked with Robin Esterhammer on this project and some very unique and future projects that will literally blow listeners away.

All the best.

James Phillips

P.S. Kim, I doubt very much anyone in the world has discarded their copy of SLIPSTREAM, and that includes everyone on this board with one.

Mr. Phillips,

Thank you for your information on the release, but I will wait for the next re-mastered release of Thief. I can listen to my father's Virgin CD until that day when/if it is re-released. I have read some positive reviews of this release, but even you admit that the flaws can be heard.

PS- Well my copy has been discarded via my university's IT department, sorry. Sorry solium, no video.

Dear Kim,

You may turn blue in the face waiting for any further release of THIEF, since it is doubtful that any further releases will be forthcoming. On the other hand, you can enjoy the score in its proper context by buying the Criterion Blu-ray.

I never said that there were flaws in my copy, for I could not detect any, but do not listen to what they said, because this release is the best sounding you will ever come across, and that includes your father's LP.

FSM has some issues, so you might just want to press Post Message once and wait a few minutes.

Did I read this wrong?

"I wrote the liner notes and it has a great sound to it and the minor sound points that two posters have made on this board, Amazon, and Intrada among others, is not worth mentioning and does not distract from the overall quality of this release."

CD not LP.

I don't know why every thread about a perseverance release has to become about Slipstream, nor do I care.

Jpteacher568 stated "do your research and make your own decision based on what you had heard from the disc, rather than what others have said." I concur completely and will gladly state IMO that it is nowhere near the quality of an intrada or la la land records. It does look excellent (which I did praise them for) and the liner notes are ok, but it's the music I bought this release for. Yes, as opposed to some people on this board, I still listen to the discs when they arrive.

Compared to another recent synth score that got reissued Transformers by intrada (also containing an extra track) "Thief" is a subpar reissue. Transformers didn't have audible faults and I praised it on this very board. I only care about the music and I'm sorry if you can't get that right, I will discuss it, regardless of who is on this board or not. When I intend to buy something, I read reviews that I hope would make mention of the defects in "Thief", minor to you as they are, such a review doesn't have to be professionally written, it just has to be honest. I'm also not a big fan of labels who just put out masters without any quality control, be it music or movies, and I will discuss this as well when it's obvious better masters exist.

I got the signed version in the mail a few days ago. I think the flame war that has erupted in this thread is completely unwarranted. On one hand, I appreciate the attempt that Perseverance made to release an "ultimate edition" of this score and the packaging design is fantastic. Unfortunately, it's not the ultimate edition of Thief because better-sounding CD versions are out there and those of us who ordered right away had to wait forever.

So I understand what those who are flaming the original complainant are saying, but the problem here is that you don't need this disc if you have the other releases. In particular, the 1995 release was done in an earlier era of mastering, and this disc promised to put everything together in the best sound possible with modern sonics. And it didn't quite deliver.

The minor audio fluctuations pointed out in this thread are there. The first thing I noticed was some analog weirdness in "Confrontation" that I didn't think was present in what I had heard before, and I've listened to that track about 300 times. Although these issues are minor in the grand scheme of things, the concern I have is what they say about the sound on the rest of the disc and the state of the source material.

I got my (signed) CD yesterday and listened to it from back to front. I got the disc solely for the Safan cue, so the rest of the disc is "gravy", so to speak. I already have an earlier edition of the score on my shelf.

Truthfully, I think its a great release. Other people are free to have other opinions, but they're also free to buy an earlier edition of the score and then choose which one they prefer. Any audio quibbles (I hear none on mine but I'll admit to having a tin ear) seem to be solely from the age of the recording and its master tapes (33 years ago!) and not as if someone dropped the proverbial ball in releasing this.

That said, I enjoyed the disc enough to stick it on my phone and I'm listening to it as I'm writing this. For me, this was money well spent.
