Bear in mind Varese is the label that released SILENT RUNNING on vinyl decades ago and have never bothered to remaster it for a CD release. I don't know if they own the rights in perpetuity but I suspect as much as no-one else has released it.

Varese have been on a downward slope since that vanity-project SPARTACUS.

I ordered Into Darkness, and used the opportunity to order their Abyss and Arrested Development releases that I've been meaning to pick up.

As far as the other discussion on Varese goes, I hope they pick up the pace of their releases in the future since they're the only ones who can release certain titles that many people are still waiting for. I don't think anyone here expects them to match the pace of Intrada or LLL, but once every six months or so just seems a little too slow. Or, failing that, maybe they could try licensing out a few of those scores to LLL or Intrada (who I'm sure would be thrilled to have the opportunity) and see how that goes, as an experiment.

Instead of complaining about Into Darkness expanded how about checking out No God, No Master by Nuno Malo. This is the sort of music that we need to see more of these days.

I agree! I have NOT heard the full album, but the samples sounded VERY promising. I do hope more people pick this up and I can easily see this begin one of the first to sell out quickly. Lovely samples that you are right, we need to hear more of these days!

Not familiar with the composer, film or score but the samples are lovely. Not what I expected as far as releases go, but it's nice to find a hidden gem from time to time.

It is likely that the direction of Varese as a company was changed when it was sold.
The people upstairs probably do not have this niche market as a big interest, especially when there are a lot of other boutique labels that are doing so well at it. It would probably be best from them to sell of the licenses to the soundtracks they hold.

No doubt it's complicated, but I always wondered why Intrada, LLL, etc. couldn't make licensing deals with Varese the same way they do with Sony, UMG, and the rest.

As for this batch, Into Darkness is ordered! [insert negative comment about the film itself here] smile

Yeah Scott, I had mixed feelings about the movie too, desperately trying to like it a lot since I grew up on Trek, it came off finally as really well crafted but entirely too calculated and commercial, stripping clean of the philosophy and introspection except for something in there about family and Khan's revenge, which might have had something to do with the inexplicable crashing the ship into San Fran. I never really got the thread of logic. I loved Trek because it was NOT Star Wars and alas..

But the score is very good.

  • disappointment = reality – expectations

The most contributing factor in this case being the 'expectations'-bit.

I think the formula should be: disappointment = reality < expectations. Which is why I've had no use for expectations.

  • As far as the other discussion on Varese goes, I hope they pick up the pace of their releases in the future since they're the only ones who can release certain titles that many people are still waiting for.

The problem with such an experiment is the aforementioned "expectation value". One of these miracles is pulled off, and before you know it, some here will require it on a regular basis. Expectations exceed reality, resulting in a symphony of "wah Varese no do as me foresaw wah".

  • It is likely that the direction of Varese as a company was changed when it was sold.

I suspect that just because Varese holds the album rights to scores doesn't mean that they can share them all willy nilly like a silly billy. Studios may need to be informed and involved for such exchanges - something the new Varese may have little time or inclination for. As above, mere speculation on my part.

I am sorry to say but this is extremely disappointing.

The important release was "Star Trek Into Darkness" and all of us already knew it was coming. Well, nice job Varese, you released a single edition last year only to become old a year later.

About the rest of releases, I can't comment because I know nothing about those movies.

I miss the days when Varese Club meant new (never available before) Goldsmith, Bernstein, Williams, Grusin, Newman
    , Silvestri...

I for one am pretty happy that there were no Silvestri, Goldsmith, Williams, etc. releases in this batch due to the fact that I pretty much exausted all of my funds on the Intrada sale!

    Well the remarks from one of the buyers certainly is interesting;

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/07/business/media/cutting-edge-group-buys-varese-sarabande.html?_r=0

“When you deploy $100 million in this space, that’s an awful lot of money,” said Philip Moross, the chief executive of Cutting Edge.

Mr. Moross, who spoke by telephone on Thursday, referred to a movie music business in which the budgets for film scores have dwindled, as inexpensive or stolen downloads knocked the bottom out of soundtrack sales.

The site for this company is rather interesting too

Varese is here to make money. Its a business and nothing else. It is not some nebulous power out in the sky that waxes and wains the tides of fortune. Its a corporation that puts things out as it can and you are welcome to purchase them if you so wish.

Hell, even the idea that they're purposely not releasing things to spite a person or persons is laughably silly. I want a reissue of Goldsmith's MacArthur. It hasn't happened yet but I also don't presume that theres a gaggle of mischievous people giggling over my minor annoyance.

Everything is arbitrary, in the end.

"Mrs. Harris, Varese and I have the same purpose in life; to MAKE, MONEY."

This must be as far as I am concerned the most disappointing batch of Club titles EVER!

Other than Star Trek (which wasn't even on my wish list, but I'll go for it), the rest are just not the kind of scores deserving of the prestigious "Club" label. To throw in one of these in the batch, so we can sort of discover a composer like that Nuno Malo guy, I guess it's ok. But where are all these favorite composers of ours and all these scores that only Varese has the right to, that are crying for expanded editions (Gremlins 2, Starship Troopers, Outbreak, On Deadly Ground, Predator 2, etc.)?

And from a business point of view, I don't know how smart it is for Varese to gamble their Club real estate on composers and movies that don't even show up on many collector's radars. With all the competition from other labels and limited spending dollars in collector's wallets, I think a lot of us will put our money elsewhere. Whereas if they released any of the titles I mentioned above, I think it's fair to assume it would be a quick sell out.

So since the folks at Varese are reading this, how about making some nice money and pleasing the majority of fans out there at the same time, on your next batch.

    Thanks for the consideration

Varese has failed to live up to their reputation. I just don't know who these obscure titles would appeal to?? Varese has gone down hill for some time now! Anyone who buys these ridiculous titles are supporting Varese in a negative way.

From a business point of view, it's probably more lucrative to put out scores that have been recently recorded and so don't require any restorative work. Likewise with the Encore series which can be mastered from existing CDs or LPs. So far it appears as if there's been a real shift at Varese since its acquisition by Cutting Edge.

As for pleasing the majority of the fans out there with releases, from hanging around the board it's pretty clear that no set of releases could possibly please the majority of fans on the board. I can't remember a Club release day where people weren't pissed about something!

Blimey! Is the deluge we're getting from the other labels not enough? I haven't nearly enough cash for everything I want to buy...
