So, my copy arrived 2 days ago, I already listen B:TAS, vol.4.
And here is the list for Arkham Archives cues (I marked new tracks).

Important note - I created my own play-lists for each episode with "main program" and "bonus tracks". In case of "bonus tracks", I used LLL's tradition and placed source, unused and alternate tracks after the main program. Here I just indicate that in this or that episode you need to place this or that track (or even all of them) at the end of main program. But if you want to place them in main program, you need ask someone else wink

  • It's Impossible / Bruce Sees Batman / Bruce Watches Batman At Work
  • Lonely Bruce
  • My Life Is A Dream

  • Climbing The Church Tower / Belltower Fight
  • Your Own Private Wonderland / Back To Reality

    40. If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?,
    46. Almost Got 'Im &
    47. Birds Of A Feather
Once again - just place all tracks at the end of main program.
By the way, Drum Sting from 46. Almost Got 'Im sounds for me as the same sting that is hidden in track Just For Laughs from Volume 2.

Great minds think alike! We made the same decisions with regard to where to place the cues, with only a few exceptions. I actually placed the 'Peregrinator Source' for Joker's Favour right before the 'Harley Party Source', since I figured it made sense to put those Sources together. I also tried to weave the Birds of a Feather Source cues in with the underscoring (e.g. placing 'Snooty Source' before 'That Fine Roman Nose'), since they comprise like nearly half of that episode's score (or at least it feels as though they do in the episode itself)!

And now... my review of the Justice League set (or rather an overview - not sure if it passes for a review)!

I started listening to this set on Wednesday night and finished it yesterday morning, though I've also found the time to copy the music to iTunes and listen to an assortment of tracks on there!

The set is a spectacular compilation of many of my favourite musical moments from the series. I jumped ahead to the third disc straight away and was immediately in awe of the space opera themes of Twilight, especially the grandiose Brainiac theme in 'Darkseid's Doublecross' (a cue written by Kristopher Carter that feels as though it carries more than a touch of Shirley Walker's influence)! You've got to love the sense of scale that the choir brings to that cue, just as it does for 'Steppenwolf Steps Out' and 'Darkseid Gets Hotfoot'. I'm a huge fan of the music in Only a Dream as well, so I could scarcely wait to hear the music for J'onn's interventions in Superman and GL's dreams ('Superman Returns to Smallville' and 'Green Lantern's Decision'). The former contains a sublime reference to the Smallville music from The Last Son of Krypton part 2, while the latter features a wondrous statement of the GL theme from In Brightest Day. Needless to say, I love those cues and it's a DREAM (not sorry at all) come true to finally own them! The serene closing cue from Lolita Ritmanis's Hearts and Minds ('Aftermath') is another highlight of this disc, as is the stupendous theme for the Royal Flush Gang in Wild Cards ('Royal Flush Gang Revealed'), which I am ECSTATIC to have at last! It's one cue that, on previous viewings of the episode, always had me in the mood to 'rock out', and you're really missing out if you haven't heard it yet! Disc 3 also brings Hawkgirl and GL's romantic tension to a (dramatic!) head with 'A Man and a Woman', which was performed live in Krakow this year and is undoubtedly one of JL's most sensational - even breathtaking - cues! And to top it all off, the heroic Superman theme from Hereafter frequently recurs at the end of this disc, preceding the moving 'Savage Redemption' cue that brings the arc to a memorable finish.

But the other discs are pretty damn good too.

Disc 1 takes us through the Secret Origins arc, spotlighting Michael McCuistion's creepy theme for the White Martians and bombastic music for Superman and Batman's desperate battle with the aliens in Metropolis. It also has the glorious 5 minute cue from part 3 when the tide turns and the heroes defeat the invaders ('Batman to the Rescue'). This theme is a joy to hear coming out of those CD speakers - it's uplifting and exciting, plain and simple. It also dovetails into the theme for the League's formation very nicely, making for a wonderful listening experience. It must have been hard to decide on what to follow that triumphant score with, but guess what - 'Flash Catches Truck Thieves' from The Brave and the Bold does so effortlessly. It's been about 10 years since I last watched that two-parter, and I had forgotten just how much fun the music was. This cue marks the exhilarating debut of McCuistion's Flash theme, and there is so much to love about it. The JL's attempted escape from Gorilla City and the brief statements of Grodd's theme are quite nice as well. Ritmanis's Legends is noteworthy, too, for the feeling of nostalgia that pervades the score when it's focusing on the members of the Justice Guild ('The Decoder Rings'). I also appreciate disc 1 for its inclusion of a large chunk of the finale from Eclipsed - particularly Flash's race towards the sun ('Flash Goes for Gold'). And there's great drama interspersed with wonder in the cues from The Enemy Below - the 'Arctic Battle' track feels like a big celebration of the League's might, as they take on the Atlanteans!

There are plenty of great moments on disc 2. Lolita Ritmanis's Injustice For All includes a cheeky theme for the Joker ('A Party Without Me?'), which becomes quite menacing as he subdues Batman for the Injustice Gang. There's also a very pure statement of Shirley Walker's Batman theme at the end ('Luthor's Grand Entrance'). Kristopher Carter's mythical Paradise Lost score is a welcome addition to this disc too, mainly for the supreme (yet foreboding) air that the Felix Faust theme carries ('Returning Home') and the brilliance of the Wonder Woman theme at the end ('Diana Banished'). A Knight of Shadows seems to foreshadow McCuistion's Time's Up! score with its lovely interlude to the imagined setting of a restored Mars, as Morgaine Le Fey tricks J'onn into believing that his wife and children are alive ('Morgaine's Psychic Spell'). This track revels in the happiness of J'onn having what he wants most - at least until the part where Etrigan arrives and shatters the illusion! There are some other very affecting touches towards the end of this disc too, in the form of J'onn coming to his senses in Tabula Rasa ('A Real Hero') and the Wonder Woman/Steve Trevor love theme from The Savage Time ('Enjoy the Moment' and 'Reunited'). That last cue actually made me cry.

For all of that though, I think disc 4 is my favourite of the four discs. McCuistion's A Better World brings home the grandeur of the Justice Lords' power in its opening track ('Smallville University Demonstration'), as well as the lingering feelings of doubt concerning whether their abilities are being used for good. Lord Batman's debate with the other members about whether to cross over to the League's universe is included here too, and it's a cue that has a very cosmic feel. It's just epic. And speaking of epic, the entire 'League vs. Lords' cue is just so exciting to hear with dialogue and SFX removed. From that moment when the penny drops that 'Luthor' is really J'onn, to Superman raising the American flag and Luthor being interviewed by the press, it just delivers all the thrills and chills. But McCuistion isn't the only composer who really gets to show off on disc 4. What about Lolita Ritmanis's tearjerker theme for Grundy's death in The Terror Beyond ('Soul')? It's understated, gentle and bittersweet, capturing the complexity of Hawkgirl both mourning her friend's passing and appreciating that he's at peace. Then we have Maid of Honour, which for me at least is Kristopher Carter's most impressive contribution to this set. The opening cues are charismatic and elegant as they set the scene for Wonder Woman's encounters with Bruce Wayne and Princess Audrey in Paris. Diana's defence of the latter ('Thugs Crash Party') offers the chance for an amazing showcase of the Wonder Woman theme. The excitement continues to build with the recap theme before we're treated to the last few minutes of music from the episode ('Flash Payback' and 'Audrey Ends on Top'), which include a snazzy, pulse-pounding James Bond-esque theme for Savage's meteorite - a huge action track for sure! Then it's on to Comfort and Joy for the divinely beautiful 'Christmas Eve' and 'Merry Christmas' cues (J'onn observing the Christmas celebrations in Smallville and Flash treating Ultra-Humanite to a Christmas present). These cues ought to make listeners very happy - I know they manage it for me, and I think the soft chiming is what achieves this effect, ensuring that these cues tug at the heartstrings. And finally, Starcrossed - I have wanted the last 10 minutes or so of music from part 3 ('Watchtower Reclaimed', 'Talak vs. Green Lantern', 'In My Eyes' and 'Farewell Hawkgirl') for so long, and it really feels like a big deal to me that's it's finally available. The music is the perfect complement to both the high-octane drama of those scenes and the sadness of a beloved character leaving the team. It's a dynamic finish to the set and the series - but would you really expect any less of the Dynamic Music Partners?

I hope that fans all over the world buy this set and enjoy it immensely. It's hard to believe that these 4 discs cover a range of scores from more than 40 of the series' 52 episodes, and yet it all flows so well! I'd love to get my hands on a second, 2-disc volume of further highlights from the show someday. This is great though - it does justice to the League and its 'Trinity' of super-composers (who are indeed worthy of the Bats/Supes/WW comparison) at long last. smile

Thank you for the write-up, JB. I have mostly the same track list as well, but like ShadowStar placed a few source cues into the program for consistency or personal taste. Not all volumes have strictly kept source music separate. I too placed "Peregrinator Source" into Joker's Favor, as well as "Roll Over Leoncavallo" in Birds of a Feather (after "Penguin Takes Veronica" even though it's not in strict order).

I also wanted to add a write-up for those who are edit-savvy and might like to combine Archive cues with program cues from the earlier volumes. Some of these edits eliminate super short cues yet compromise chronology slightly, while other program cues are actually separated and recombined with Archive cues to place them in proper order while still keeping a single track (and eliminating short cues). There's a description for each. Archive cues are asterisked, choices are final. Unless you can change my mind. wink

    ON LEATHER WINGS -
*Police Response / Batman Investigates / Batman Uses Infared / Police Rush Building

Not strictly in order, but it made musical sense to place it at the front of this cue.

    CHRISTMAS WITH THE JOKER -
*A Word from Our Sponsor / More Game Show Music / Drive To The Toy Company
*To the Observatory - Observatory Cannon - Cannon Out of Control - Robin Blows Up Cannon

Both edits again not strictly in order, but close and it made musical sense to place them at the front of these older cues.

    TWO-FACE PART II -
    1. Bruce Wayne's Nightmare
    2. *They Always Come Back
    3. Two-Face Remembers

The two older tracks were crossfaded together out of order. Careful editing and fading can keep all three separate and in order, and IMO improve the musical sense.

    VENDETTA –
Bullock Gets The Croc / *Bullock's Back

A simple, tasteful edit can add this very short cue to the end of what was previously the last track. It adds a nice, uplifting button to Bullock Gets.

    PERCHANCE TO DREAM -
It's Impossible / *Lonely Bruce / Bruce Sees Batman / Bruce Watches Batman At Work
*Running from the Cops / Climbing The Church Tower / Belltower Fight

On both edits, the new cues can be placed very nicely within the old structure to restore the chronology while also keeping really nice musical flow.

Got my package. Honestly, was never a big fan of the music from Justice League but bought the set anyway to support these releases.

Hey JB Fan, thank you so much for going to all the trouble of listing the bonus tracks as part of the older Volumes programmes. I was hoping someone would figure it out, as I didn't like the idea of so many random bonus tracks just stuck together at the end of Volume 4. It will be a little bit of extra work to resequence all the other volumes, but I think in the end it will be worth it.

My review/overview of BTAS Volume 4:

My copy arrived last Wednesday and I couldn’t wait to delve into it! I was sorely tempted to skip straight to the second disc so that I could finally hear the original cues from Fear of Victory and the ‘Arkham Archives’ cues from previously released scores. But patience is a virtue, and it’s especially important even when you’re on the cusp of getting what you wanted. So I decided to listen to disc 1 first, and I’m glad I did.

Off Balance is a score that’s brimming with mystery, largely because of the enigmatic Talia al Ghul, who gets a sultry theme courtesy of Mark Koval. With its eerie opening cue, and the dynamic ‘Society Boys’ cue that immediately follows it, the score asserts itself as the right one to be first out of the gate on this set. Michael McCuistion’s ‘Lab Tests’ cue is a highlight, as it threads his Count Vertigo theme through a tense sequence in which Batman and Talia’s lives are at stake – a pivotal moment in the plot. Yet it’s Mark Koval who delivers the score’s most striking cue: a rousing rendition of Talia’s theme which transitions into the all too familiar theme for her father… ‘Ra’s al Ghul’.

This is followed by Joker’s Wild: a whimsical but menacing Joker score courtesy of Todd Hayen, who uses strings to put his own spin on the Clown Prince of Crime. There is much to admire about this score, from the joyous ‘Joker’s Grand Opening Source’, to the mania of ‘The Joker’s Escape’ (in which he goes on a rampage through Arkham), and finally the helicopter battle at the climax of the episode (‘Jackpot’). Todd Hayen pays tribute to Shirley Walker’s classic themes throughout, and he does give her Joker theme a welcome nod in ‘Bruce Investigates’.

The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy is next, and there’s no shortage of drama in this one. Having said that, I really enjoy the lighter touches, like Mark Koval’s childlike theme for Josek’s humiliation in ‘The Baron’. The episode’s final cues are the most intense and exciting, especially ‘Gotcha’, which complements the revelation of the Baron’s secret (and Batman’s trump card) very well! This score is particularly Gotham-esque, with its brooding tones in the aforementioned track, which is nice.

The alternating between darkness and light-heartedness continues with Zatanna, though this score isn’t zany like Joker’s Wild. Peter Tomashek’s opening cue is happy and pleasant, evoking the wonder of Zatanna’s magic show. As Batman and Zatanna commence their investigation, the music reflects the deepening mystery, particularly at the start of the ‘Kane’s a Dummy’ cue. And ‘Fight Without Wind’ proves to be one of this disc’s most memorable cues, with the strings creating a sharp lashing sound that reflects the gravity of Zatanna and Batman’s perilous situation at that point in the story!

The biggest surprise is Moon of the Wolf. I’ve never cared for this episode or its score at all, until now. The antics with the electric guitar actually go very well with the orchestra in each and every cue on this set, and I’m kicking myself for not realising this before now. Maybe I just dismissed the electronics as obnoxious and intrusive when I was watching the episode itself. Now that I’ve had the opportunity to listen to the isolated score, I can see that I was being very close-minded! ‘Werewolf Attack’, ‘Werewolf Comes Home to Milo’ and ‘Anthony Becomes a Wolf’ all sound terrific, and the sense of horror is sustained, rather than made cheesy by the electric guitar. This score is an interesting experiment, and one that paid off, though if I had to pick a favourite cue I would probably choose ‘Open House’, which brings the story to a sad conclusion.

Last up on disc 1 is The Mechanic. As always, Shirley Walker’s Penguin theme is great to listen to, and both Peter Tomashek and John Tatgenhorst have fun with it here. ‘Limping Home’ and ‘Batman Saves Earl’ are still two of the more noteworthy cues though, for the simultaneously strong and humble tones with which the listener is made to associate the character of Earl (the mechanic). The frantic music towards the end underscores Penguin’s delight at being able to wreak havoc with the Batmobile.

Disc 2 begins with The Worry Men, which was the last of the original 65 episodes in production order. Happily, Shirley Walker’s timeless theme for the Mad Hatter is heard again here for the first time since Volume 2 (‘Mad Hatter Rejoices’), though Lolita Ritmanis’s score really shines when it’s riffing on the jungle theme of the Hatter’s shaman henchmen. The opening action sequence (‘Party Crasher’ & ‘Up on the Roof’) is fun, and the ‘Jungle Club Source’ is a real treat.

Next we have Fear of Victory, minus the material heard in the episode that was tracked from Walker’s Nothing to Fear score. I cannot say enough good things about Lisa Bloom’s cues (‘Falling Rocks’ & ‘Saving Robin’), which serve as a wonderful musical accompaniment to the spectacle of Batman and Robin’s struggle to apprehend a pair of jewel thieves on a skyscraper. As Robin succumbs to the Scarecrow’s fear gas in mid-air, Bloom illustrates his powerlessness and petrified state marvellously. Then she hits us with an incredible take on Walker’s Batman theme as the Dark Knight finds himself in freefall. This is a stunner of a cue. It’s followed by another spectacular cue, in the form of ‘A Gallery of Enemies’ by Shirley Walker, which showcases the Joker, Ivy, Two-Face and Scarecrow themes in succession amidst a suspenseful moment in the dark halls of Arkham. A few brief cues by Carlos Rodriguez round out the underscoring for this episode, and the threat of the Scarecrow looms large in these excellent short pieces.

His Silicon Soul is the last of the full scores presented on this set. Though there is drama aplenty throughout this score, I feel that the opening cues carry the most resonance with me. The first track covers the warehouse action sequence, in which the HARDAC Batman comes to life and tangles with a group of thugs. The robbers’ confusion is illustrated very nicely with the frenetic music. Then, as the HARDAC Batman confronts Alfred in Wayne Manor, we hear the first of a number of musical statements that combine Batman and HARDAC’s themes – HARDAC’s theme is powerful and commanding but also a little despairing, which makes this pairing very interesting. There’s much to enjoy here.

The lengthy sequence of Arkham Archives round out the set, and they are brilliant. Shirley Walker’s Two-Face two-parter is fleshed out with the inclusion of such cues as ‘Gordon’s Raid’ (which foreshadows ‘Batman Tracks Dent’ from Volume 1) and the terrifying ‘Big Bad Harv’. Vendetta benefits from the release of ‘The Greenhouse Visit’ and ‘Let’s Get Some Air’, which provide listeners with more of the murky criminal underworld vibes so prevalent in that score on Volume 1. ‘Batman Pulls the File’ is terrific too – there’s a particular moment at the start of this cue that reminds me of a moment from Sideshow (another Killer Croc score by Michael McCuistion which has not yet been released). ‘Running from the Cops’ is an essential addition to Walker’s Perchance to Dream score, smoothing over the rough transition from ‘My Life Is a Dream’ to ‘Climbing the Church Tower’ on Volume 1.

There are also some very cool Source cues included in the Arkham Archives. Christmas With the Joker, Pretty Poison, Birds of a Feather and more are made even more colourful with the extras and easter eggs contained on this set.

Overall, Volume 4 is a fantastic new entry in La-La Land’s collection of BTAS releases. You would think that there might be at least a handful of stinkers in the course of a 65 episode run of scores, but fans of BTAS know better, and now that material is all out there to be enjoyed by anyone who harbours enthusiasm for this music. I’d advise the hardcore fans to rearrange their playlists accordingly where the ‘Arkham Archives’ cues are concerned, to ensure the most complete listening experience possible. Bravo, La-La Land, you’ve done it again… Now please devote the same level of care and attention to an all-encompassing release of music from The Adventures of Batman and Robin! To think that 8 years ago, we didn’t have any of this music… Now, a staggering amount is available! It’s great to see this extraordinary scoring getting the exposure that it deserves.

Just a quick shout-out to anyone who's enjoying the Justice League set (or planning on buying it) and wants a second volume to make their views known to La-La Land! E-mail them if you want them to release more music from the show. It's never too early to show interest, especially not after what happened with Superman:TAS (which might not be getting a second volume due to slow/poor sales).

I think strong sales might spur La-La Land into considering a Vol. 2 more than e-mails would...
It's not as if they DON'T want to release this DC music. From what I understand several people who work for the company are quite enthusiastic about the DMP's work for DC and other television and films.

True, but I'm saying this now because it might be hard to persuade La-La Land to release a second volume of JL given that the first release has already (partially) addressed most of the show's episodes.

Plus communication is very important - if JL sells well then that might spur LLL on to produce a JLU volume, but not necessarily a second volume of JL as well. There needs to be a specific demand for JL Vol 2, like there was for BTAS Vol 4. I'm pretty sure that sales alone were not the reason that LLL deviated from their earlier plan to go from BTAS Vol 3 to The Adventures of Batman and Robin.

I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying the JUSTICE LEAGUE set, it's got some really fine music on it!

Communication is important, but my recollection is that a Volume 4 was teased very shortly after the release of Volume 3. So it might have been initial sales alone, though I'm sure folks wrote in since it was public knowledge there was no plan for 4. So yes, communicate!

Money talks! If these sets sell well, I can't imagine LLL saying 'no' to releasing much more music from the DMP canon until they "run out".
But I see your point. A second volume of the original 'Justice League' - be it 2 discs or 3 or 4 - would be very welcome, and I'm sure it's something that will be in the cards if the current release brings in sizable profit!

So is the "Main Title" and "End Credits" on BTAS Vol. 4 a different take or is the same as some of the others from previous volumes?

Same takes, though you may hear a little something extra at the end... smile

Not that it really matters, but just as an FYI @LaLaLandRecords, on the page for BTAS Vol 4, the header bar has info for A Certain Smile wink

I recently did a two-part interview with James Harvey of The World's Finest, in which we discuss the 2016 Comic-Con titles and subsequent Bat-discs!
