Lukas you're killing me... Why don't you just tell us what it is? Xmas shopping is something that must be planned!

Killing you like a mockingbird, perhaps?

...with the heavy metal of his secrecy.

Out on a limb, I'll throw in "The Land of the Pharaohs."

Tiomkin has already had an FSM release, so it can't be that one.

I still like my original guess. It's probably wrong but fits better than a lot of the above.

The BLUE BOX.....I have no factual knowledge of what this is, but.....

1- With rumors floating around, I think the term "BLUE BOX" actually DOES have significance. And note that Lukas has used it, himself, in his post.

2- Based on rumors I'm hearing, and if I recall correctly, I believe someone HAS guessed this previously quite some time ago---but didn't know it.

3- I think we shouldn't be looking to the Golden Age.

4- I think this is a mass-market project with a very high-profile still today, though some may be old enough to fall outside the AFM cutoff period, and other material may be European-recorded.

5- I suspect the term "famous and beloved score" will turn out to be somewhat misleading to a few.

6- I suspect we should, once again, look to the licensing companies Lukas has regularly been dealing with.

Once again.....I DON'T KNOW what this box set is.....but there are certainly rumors out there, and the format---8 discs, with 160 pages of notes, all capable of being abbreviated at some point later---certainly bolsters MY suspicions.

Doesn't the "abbreviated" concept suggest to you that this box contains much outtake, extra, or additional material, beyond the scores, which could be left out successfully in the future. And, in opposition, how many older, particularly Golden Age scores, or compiled sets, have extra material that could be eliminated?

How well do all of you remember the previous posts on the BLUE BOX?

Well if FSM decides to start on scores after 1980 how about a Superman boxed set with newly remastered scores to the first 4 films?

Whoa! What an incredible guess! I haven't heard such an outrageous idea since......

my last post above.

why in the world would Warners let FSM release that?

Didn't Lukas say all the material had been previously released? That rules out Superman IV.

I'm really reaching here, but there is a track

called " BLUE SHADOWS AND PURPLE HILLS "

And IT is from SPARTACUS, so perhaps the BLUE BOX is a North collection or a collection that includes SPARTACUS.

Or maybe a Rozsa Box, the 3 Polydor discs plus "Time after Time" and four other scores.

Here's one from out of the blue (pun intended):

The first American issuance of that German BMG/RCA series of recordings: 100 Years of Film Music 1895-1995.

It's all been issued before and there's plenty to fill 8 discs + a lengthy booklet.

But I don't recall that it included any one score that could be considered especially "beloved".

Just a thought, while we are all wildly speculating.

to summarize my guesses (for newcomers to this board please note I have never once guessed correctly 'bout a forthcoming release):

Fielding box: is THE WILD BUNCH a famous and beloved (FAB) score?

BATMAN:the animated sereies- if the BATMAN score is included that would qualify as FAB.
A bat-box w/reissue of FSM's BATMAN-THE MOVIE?

Gil Melle - no FAB scores that i can think of.

John Williams at Universal; if a remastered original version of E.T. is included; that's a FAB

Hitchcock/Universal- original tracks from PYSCHO sure qualifies as a FAB.

Alex North- SPARTRACUS a FAB score; maybe

tawk amungst yawselves

I've heard four or five of those and while there are some decent performances here and there, a lot it is very ordinary, sound and performance-wise, in my opinion.
I definitely hope the Blue Box is better than that.

I don't care a fig about all this Blue Box hubbub . . . at least that's what I'm going to keep repeating to myself until it is actually announced.

Because it contains one of the most famous and beloved scores of all time.

I'm still puzzled over what that could be... a score that would be eagerly wanted by die-hard soundtrack collectors, that is also (apparently) loved by the general public.

I can't see much beyond Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Dr. Zhivago, and ET (plus any number of Disney scores). Any other suggestions for what would qualify?

BORN FREE - released by FSM

Jerry Goldsmith might be able to.

So Williams at Universal would include:

Sugarland Express
Family Plot
Jaws
Jaws 2
E.T.
Always
Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
The Lost World
and possibly 1941

Don't think thats it.

Except that every rendition of "Gone With the Wind" one can imagine has been issued, including the OST in rechanneled stereo and the OST in glorious mono...in a 2-CD Rhino set, no less.

what about sacd; dvd -a, 5.1 sound?
