GLADIATOR (2000)

The Colosseum trumpet (and other large horn) players belt out Hans Zimmer's main title music as an introduction to the games.

In the course of the Morricone-scored Ripley's Game, there's a scene where one of the characters tries out a restored harpsichord by playing a few bars from Morricone's The Humanoid. Not exactly the same as the other examples in this thread but definitely within its spirit.

Licence to Kill (1989) - The bullets ricochet off the tanker to the theme of the Bond chorus.

In the pre-credit bank robbery scene, in a saloon the piano player performs the theme from BANDOLERO!.

(It's included on the expanded disc releases.)

Solo: A Star Wars Story featured the Imperial March at an Imperial recruiting station on Corellia, implying that it's not just a villain's theme, but a military anthem actually used by the Galactic Empier.

…I really hate it when they use a film's main theme in the film itself as source music in bars, at parties or on the radio.

This definitely would detract from the realism of a scene — if it is realism that's being strived for. This sort of practice, which was much more common in the past than it is today, put the movie in its own little self-contained universe, which in some cases was the intended effect.

This. Millions of instances.

I believe that in Wanted, one of the characters has a ringtone that's the theme of the movie.

And you can't forget the Life Day song Carrie Fisher sings in the Star Wars Holiday Special, set to the tune of Star Wars Theme.

And even Bill Murray sings his own lyrics to the "Star Wars" theme when he played that lounge on that recurring skit on "Saturday Night Live".

In The Haunting, on her way to the mansion, Lily Taylor hums her theme. It's unclear if the music is playing as a radio source.

Then there's the drummer from Spaceballs, minus the accompanying orchestra from just beforehand.

Leonard Rosenman was on set & on location for EAST OF EDEN, where he was able to provide actors Julie Harris and Raymond Massey with themes to hum which later would be key (no pun intended) to their characters in the underscore.

In On Her Majesty's Secret Service (I think) a janitor is sweeping while whistling Goldfinger.

That's fantastic!

I don't suppose either Ray Faiola or ImperialSound could remember and remind us what Ray's favorite was? The old Youtube link no longer seems to work, at least, not for me...

Didn’t Living Daylights have a guy strangled while one of the songs from the movie was playing on a Sony cassette walkman?

Am curious about Ray's m'self. Oh and yours don't woik either, Dr. Jones. Might yours perhaps be a bit of Schumann magic from TNOTH? I know he sneaked in an arrangement per this thread's subject.

In Asterix & Obelix Mission Cleopatra right after the opening quarrel of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, Caesar leaves and hums the same notes of the music heard.

Mine don't work either, Howard? I haven't put any links of my own on this thread.

Thanks, I suppose HUNTER does count, (though some borderline examples have been submitted on this thread), with Willa's theme being used as source music for Ruby and Preacher's ice cream conversation, drawing a parallel between both women's susceptibility to Preacher's charm.

The link in your previous reply under "My favorite." Which must be someone else's. Non-italicized quote I presume?

Doesn't one of the twin boys in THE OTHER whistle or hum Jerry Goldsmith's Main Theme to the film?

Something like that.

My definitive contribution is FROM NOON TILL THREE wherein Elmer Bernstein and lyricist Alan Bergman portray lyricists who put lyrics to a music box melody that has become popular along Tin Pan Alley. Elmer wrote the score so he is making reference to his own melody.

Here's one!

In Doctor Who s35 e12 - "Hell Bent", the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) plays Murray Gold's "Clara's Theme" on his guitar.

In “The Night Train Murders” (a title as spoilerific as Snakes on a Plane), one of the thugs plays a harmonica riff from the Morricone score, much as in Once Upon a Time in the West. Also known as “Violence and Terror on the Midnight Train” and one or more Italian names.
