Has anyone in the UK found Tree Of Life on CD yet? It was listed as coming out last Monday on amazon but then never came into stock, and isn't listed at all at play.com or hmv... Eagerly awaiting the score, may have to import it if it isn't available on these shores.

Sorry James, I misjudged the tone of your post and overreacted. It's all too easy here to assume everyone's default tone is "Smartarse" but it's not always the case.

Thanks for the advice on the L'Enquete Corse and Reston Groupes, the CDs are out of my price range so I may go for the downloads.

No worriessmile

Yep, there are some great albums in Desplat's back catalog. I remember Silva issuing a press release at least a year or two ago, saying they had bought the rights to many of them and would be reissuing them as digital downloads. Silence since then, however.

From what I've read, the film was pulled from its scheduled release due to a legal conflict between the production company and Icon, the UK distributors. (Icon wanted to release it before the Cannes premiere). It currently has no release date there, as I understand it.

I'd imagine the label releasing the UK CD decided that, without the publicity associated with a big theatrical release, the CD won't sell, so they're probably holding the CD back to time to the eventual theatrical release.

Ah right, thanks James that makes sense. I'll place it in my next US order then (probably whatever Intrada release on Monday!), don't want to wait!

After getting this off of iTunes recently I'm giving this a first listen now. I have to admit I'm very taken away by the magical feeling that "Circles" gives me. Can't wait to see where (and if) Malick uses this in the film.

I wouldn't get your hopes, up. I've only listened to the CD once, so can't spot pieces individually, but when I saw the film on Sat night, I only noticed 5-10 mins of Desplat score.

It's almost entirely scored with existing classical pieces, which Desplat knew full well was likely. As he has said in interviews, he considered it an honor to work with an artist like Malick, no matter how much or how little of his music got used. Smart fellow.

Definitely. Even in the liner notes, Desplat mentions being entirely thrilled and honored to be working on Malick's film. He says he began writing and recording music before he'd even seen a frame of the film. He was that inspired. Frankly, I like when a composer LOVES his job. I love the album, and I'm glad I could hear all of this music from Desplat. I'm sure Malick did a fine job selecting pre-existing music selections for Tree of Life -- as he does with all of his pictures -- but Desplat's music here is very engaging to my ears.

That wasn't so much Desplat being inspired on his own, Malick commissioned him to write the score before the film was shot, and much of the music was written without picture at Malick's request. Desplat was willing to do this because it was for Malick and he knew the resulting film would be worth it.

By the way, I forgot to mention above. As well as SUR MES LEVRES and LES CORPS IMPATIENTS being in a very similar style, SYRIANA is too. It's still in print and much easier to find. There's even one track on TREE OF LIFE that reuses part of a piece from SYRIANA. To me it's done in much the way Michael Nyman does, not out of laziness, but a sort of homage to the composer's own previous work.

How do you tell the difference-- between self-homage and laziness? Just curious..not trying to be argumentative or anything smile

I dunno, just because I like the composers, I guesssmile I'm sure if I didn't like them, I'd call it lazysmile

:ahem:
Clearing throat on recalling thoughts posted some time ago in this thread>

'Emergence of Life' directly references the throbbing bass pulses of Syriana.

Well guys, I can tell you right now that only a minor portion of Desplat's score can be heard and that 80 to 85 % is classical music (even from Preisner). I saw the movie yesterday and it floored me. I know reviews have been mixed but this is Malick's masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. The visuals are mesmerizing but the way he tells the story of these three brothers of which the oldest one has a difficult relationship with his father just blew me away emotionally (the story is really close to home for me...). I'm sorry for mister Desplat (I'm a big fan) but Malick uses these classical pieces in such a masterful way that I honestly can't be bothered. The movie is an experience and brought me to tears several times. It's not for everyone but it's one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I will still get the CD though.

So now I've been listening to this score and I like what I'm hearing very, very much. Even if his score isn't used very much, he managed to capture the feel of the movie and some of his pieces are truly outstanding. Some people said this was Desplat at his most minimalist and to some degree that's true yet I find myself returning to this score again and again. I think it's one of his more inspired scores of late.

Finally got a copy of this on CD (from SAE) and there is an audio defect at about 05:43 into Track 2 Circles for a couple of seconds, it's like an echoey dropout, a dropout ripple if you will. I'm assuming I've just got a faulty disc, as nobody else has mentioned a problem in this track... Has anybody had any problems with the CD?

That's weird, Mark, the download has no dropouts at all....

Just kidding, I don't know. I just wanted to twist the knife.

I emailed SAE, but if it is a problem affecting all the CDs I guess a replacement would be rather pointless. frown

Dropouts or no dropouts, this is a damned classy piece of work. Desplat has been wearing himself thin (for me, at least), but this one was a standout. Too bad hardly any of it is in the movie!
