The film is EXCELLENT. Beltrami's score less so, but it works in the film.

The US will apparently be getting the director's cut like the rest of the world, after the director won a year-long test of wills with Harvey Scissorhands. Of course, Weinstein is only giving it a limited release now out of spite.

Just saw the film too. Didn't like it much. I appreciate the Gilliam vibe they're going after, but as Kev says -- it only works in parts of the film -- other parts are totally silly and random.

Of course anyone around here who knows me could predict that I love the score -- but not only that, along with The Invisible and any of the Scream scores, I believe it is Beltrami's very finest score.

But I also did love the movie. It does aim high to be different, like its graphic novel source material, and the ballsy approach to production design and aesthetic totally won me over. A film unlike any I've ever seen -- very, very hard to say these days -- and not only that but it is terrific entertainment and tackles some very interesting themes. Well worth checking out.

From post by Bond1965 in separate thread:

-----

Looks like Varese is doing the U.S. release of this score.

(I sure do wish this site had a better search engine so I didn't have to scroll and search through 7 pages of threads to find this one. Anyway...)

Art and tracklist up at Varese. Looks like same tracklist/runtime as the overseas import release. Different cover art obviously. Beautiful back cover artwork!!!

Hopefully with this Varese release Snowpiercer the score will reach a wider audience and film score listeners can realize and discover what a powerful and original piece of work Beltrami has created.

I am curious if it will also include the train hymn, which is just hilarious & sung by Mrs Beltrami and kids.
But probably it will be exactly the same content as the year old release, so it should be included as well.

Man, I do like the cover art much better, but my impatient self went ahead and bought the foreign release when it was first for sale! I'm just glad to have it. If I see this copy around for a decent price though, I'll probably grab it and put the other on eBay.

I found a solution to this problem.

1. Go to www.google.com
2. Type in whatever you are searching for, following by "site:www.filmscoremonthly.com". For example, in this case you'd type "snowpiercer site:www.filmscoremonthly.com"

Voila! The thread you are looking for will be one of the top results.

Just a quick note, Beltrami wrote and recorded Snowpiercer before Wolverine, not the other way around as stated in your review.

Just caught the movie. Even though there are several moments where the score is given prominence in the mix, I must admit I barely took note of it. I hope it comes through better on the album as I adore Beltrami's work, especially his recent output.

This has been a gangbuster year for him.

Listened to this after a few months absence.

It´s even more terrific than I thought before. Definitely one of my Beltrami favorites.

It's a great film. A little Gilliam, a little CUBE, a little bit of that undefinably inspired and twisty tone-switching brilliance that directors in South Korea have been perfecting over the past 15 years or so. I really love it as well, even if there are a few flaws here and there.

I can't agree with you re: Beltrami's score. Aside from that galloping end title, which very effectively lends optimism to what could have otherwise been interpreted as a very bleak ending, it's really just wallpaper throughout and doesn't engage in any special way. This is too bad, because scores that have a real voice in the film has been a pretty consistent boon to these South Korean directors' approach to filmmaking: See OLDBOY, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS, HOST... All distinct, melodic, expressive and *creative* scores that subvert expectations effectively. This score felt largely unimaginative and by-the-numbers in contrast.

I'm *still* waiting for Beltrami to write something as memorable or genuinely sweeping/gorgeous as his finale cue from MIMIC, "Reunited".

I totally agree with you, this is one of my very favorites. It's utterly brilliant. I disagree with the poster above, I strongly feel it is quite distinctive, imaginative, and creative and supports the film beautifully with a singular, wholly unique sonic "vision".

---

I think *possibly* that people are more likely to move forward and enjoy contemporary Beltrami scores and the work that he does today if they're not waiting for a reprise of a sound from 20 years ago. That was Mimic, this is now...I personally can think of a dozen cues that Beltrami has written that are as glorious and sweeping and gorgeous as "Reunited" but that's a subjective opinion.

I also don´t think that the "Snowpiercer"-score is mainly wallpaper. Far from it. For me it is highly melodic, full of themes, and captures the atmosphere perfectly.

To each his own.

It's a solid score with a few excellent, standout cues.
But it pales mightily compared to the incredible work Byeong Woo-lee did on the director's previous two Korean films.
