Bruce, when will this cd be ready to mail? Thanks. smile

A suggestion: Victor Young at Paramount Vol. 1

If all goes according to Hoyle, by this coming Friday - which would be four weeks early.

Bruce, do you mean Far Horizons/Incas or Victor Young at Paramount Vol. 1? smile

Kidding aside, that's good news! I'm greatly looking forward to the Salter/Buttolph cd.

I too, am looking forward to hearing the score from SECRET OF THE INCAS. I only wish that it was a scene from SECRET OF THE INCAS on the cover of the disc instead of THE FAR HORIZONS. Surely there are far more fans of the INCA movie than the HORIZONS adventure flick?

I would have thought so, too, having been a huge Indiana Jones fan ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark came out and discovering Secret of the Incas through Indy fandom, but I'm sure Far Horizons is noteworthy as well (presumably few of Charlton Heston's movies are super-obscure, if any).

I'd have preferred a SotI cover on this album myself, but as noted earlier the lack of one won't keep me from getting it.

as much as i appreciate and respect victor young and franz waxman and own quite a lot of their music(especially the former), i really would like to see scores come out by roy webb(THE SEA CHASE,BLOOD ALLEY)and paul sawtell(STOPOVER TOKYO) because their fifties output has never really been on cd. you can also throw in more tiomkin anytime! hopefully NIGHT PASSAGE along with TENSION AT TABLE ROCK. you do a wonderful job bruce.

Manderley posted his thoughts in the Waxman thread, but they certainly belong here in this thread, which had slipped to page four thanks to, well...

"Since I'm doing this, I guess I may as well comment on the FAR HORIZONS/SECRET OF THE INCAS disc which I received in the mail today, and have been playing this evening. (That didn't take long to reach me.....although I do only live a few streets away from Mr. Bruce!)

The featured score, THE FAR HORIZONS, is a rousing "northern-western" score which accompanies a colorful and entertaining VistaVision film. Probably because I've been playing the old soundtrack to Hans Salter's James Stewart/Universal-International 1952 western, BEND OF THE RIVER, in the last few days, I find a great deal of similarity in these two scores. Both are melodic, expansive, full of action, and have several scattered themes which are quite lovely.

It was particularly rewarding to hear far more of the HORIZONS music than was on the old Tony Thomas/Hans Salter western compilation LP of 30+ years ago---it helps to pull the whole score continuity together as a listening experience when you have so much surviving material. Though recorded (or now existing) in mono only, the sound quality is excellent---far better than the old LP. The score is very well written, as can be expected from Salter, though my personal feeling is that it does not move in a very different direction or creative space than BEND OF THE RIVER; there's nothing startlingly new or original in this score---just a another fine western piece from Salter. I guess when you have a good track record for a specific genre---and it works---it's probably best to stick with it.

The SECRET OF THE INCAS, on the other hand, sounds very different---and I must confess this is the score I was more taken with. In beautiful stereo, but far too short (at around 26+ minutes), this is the "special" score of the disc. I haven't compared this disc to the film, but what surprises me from what is on the disc is that the "action" music is quite subsidiary to the romantic and somewhat latin sections of the score. There are several beautiful cues I particularly loved---orchestrated gorgeously---and, quite frankly, if I didn't know, I'd probably not have guessed this was a Buttolph score (though I always enjoy his work). As I was listening to these particular cues, I kept thinking that the qualities of the orchestration and development of the music were very Friedhofer-esque in sound and imagination. You can't get much better than that---and since it was NOT Hugo, Buttolph rises even higher in my esteem than I considered him before. I will be playing this score many times again.

I hope that those of you who enjoy Golden Age scores will pick up each of these discs---the Waxman and the Salter/Buttolph. You really can't go wrong."

Mine arrived today. Excellent disc. Great to have a new CD by two splendid composers whose releases are way too few. Perhaps Skinner will get a similar rare outing soon?

Track 7 sounds almost like it could be an alternate for the sea battle in Ben-Hur. Some surprising similarities, particularly from around the 45-second mark.

Man, I am so pissed at our mail carrier right now (not the regular one, but the Saturday stand-in). I was expecting this package from Kritzerland and another package I'd ordered from moviemusic.com to arrive today, and when I checked our mailbox at 6pm, it was still empty, which was odd since the mail is usually delivered before 5pm, so I looked up the tracking # of the moviemusic package and it says it was delivered at 5:18pm (presumably, along with the package from Kritzerland)! We live in a condo complex with secure mailboxes, so I can only assume that the packages were put into the wrong mailbox, and of course, it being Saturday, the post office won't be open again until Monday. I'm just hoping that the neighbor whose box my packages were misdelivered to is a good Samaritan and rings our doorbell. The mailboxes are clearly labeled with the owners' names; how difficult can it be to put it in the correct box? Arrrrrrrrrrgh! I was really looking forward to listening to these CDs this weekend.

P.S. At least I have the SKETCHES ON STAR WARS CD that I found at a local shop today to hold me over until that mess gets sorted out. Coincidentally, it was produced by none other than Bruce Kimmel. Listening now and loving it. BK saves the day in an unexpected way.

I love the Sketches on Star Wars CD - one of many jazz things I did with Terry Trotter - I just knew the score would really work that way, and it does thanks to his artistry and the artistry of Tom Warrington and especially drummer Joe LaBarbera.

This was my first order from the Kritzerland website, do you get an email notification when the CD ships? I'm outside the US so I don't expect to get it until a week or two, but it's always nice to know if it is on its way so you have something to look forward to.

I got the cd yesterday. Just played The Far Horizons by Hans Salter. It's a rich, colorful, full orchestra score, very robust. Excellent sound quality too. Great to have it. The finale has the HJS 3 note signature ...... right PNJ? smile

Will play Secret of the Incas later, looks great too. Another winner Bruce!

UPDATE:

As I'd suspected, the Saturday mail carrier put the packages in the wrong mailbox, but it was sorted out (no pun intended) this afternoon, and I'm now basking in the gorgeous sounds of Salter's FAR HORIZONS.

I got my copy and finally had time to listen. A real treat! Both scores are gems and "Secret of the Incas" inspired me to pull out my Yma Sumac "Secret of the Xtabay" CD for a listen. Hadn't listened to it in ages. It always pulls me into childhood because my parents had a boxed set of 45s of this title and I listened to it constantly.

Thanks so much Bruce, for continuing to put out these obscure but wonderful titles. Fortunately, the era of film music you love matches up with mine quite nicely.

I don't know if the elements are available but please give consideration to Sol Kaplan's spectacular score for "Way of a Gaucho". It is my main Holy Grail that has not yet seen a release of any kind.
