I re-watched THE CASSANDRA CROSSING, yesterday, and was reminded of how horrible the score is. Right up there as worst film score for a major motion picture, with Webber's score for THE ODESSA FILE.

THE CASSANDRA CROSSING is not horrible at all. The worst Goldsmith soundtrack I've heard is CRIMINAL LAW (followed closely by RENT-A-COP).

Are you deciding what I think is horrible?! Yes, it is horrible!

Goldsmith remains my favorite film composer of all-time, though.

He is my favorite film composer too. His music sure is one thing: ALWAYS INTERESTING; no matter what score you are listening to. I always find something new with each listening.

While I probably haven't heard even half of all of Goldsmith's scores, there is one I can think of that I felt didn't work in its film at all and that was so thunderingly repetitive I would never want to hear again in any form: Hoosiers. Never in a million chances would I have guessed this music came from the same man who just a few years before gave the world The Secret of NIMH, Alien, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. But I know many people love Hoosiers, so this is clearly just a personal thing.

Criminal Law for me was a shocking score.

CASSANDRA CROSSING is awesome. Beautiful main European sounding theme and superb action music. What's not to love from Master Goldsmith here?

Anyway, when I hear the words WORST and Jerry together, I will definitely think of CRIMINAL LAW, which I personally wouldn't really consider a "music" score, but more on the line of Sound Patterns and droning. A truly dismal listen both in and away from the movie.

TO PHILLY SON- Does it hurt to be in the minority? If it makes you feel any better I thought THE CASSENDRA CROSSING main theme was a superb melodic piece. Remember TO EACH ONE'S OWN and picking on anything Jerry did around here is very very dangerous. Look what became of the man who started this thread[ha, ha , ha]

No, it doesn't hurt. The main title is fine. However, what you hear throughout, is that horrible clang thing, which is somehow supposed to pass for a suspense score. It takes me out of the film, every time I hear it. I'd rather the scenes were silent. It stinks. People telling me it doesn't does not make it stink any less. While THE ODESSA FILE gets my vote for worst, ever, and the film I most want to have re-scored, THE CASSANDRA CROSSING comes very close.

Then I do agree with you, now that I think about it, I found that annoying as well.My mistake or misunderstanding, i meant the theme not the whole score.

I really can't believe all the hate for CRIMINAL LAW. I think it's Goldsmith's best all-synth score, definitely more listenable than RUNAWAY, parts of which I like very much. CL is written very orchestrally with parts for piano, synth strings, brass, percussion and other looped samples such as the sound Peter Gabriel used in one of his songs (as previously mentioned on this thread). It's also very effective in the film...I recommend those that dislike the score on disc to watch the film and you may warm up to what Goldsmith was creating musically.

That's like saying, "The best time I was kicked in the nuts".

That's hilarious! Ok, you're probably right..not exactly a huge commendation, so I guess what I mean is that it's a very solid score in the film and after seeing it you will likely much more appreciate what Goldsmith was trying to do. Certainly with no connection to the film, the score could be perceived as aimless perhaps....however I still feel surprised that many here could not appreciate the skill in the writing, whether it be for synth or other acoustic ensemble.
