Generic, uninspiring, Henry Jackman in auto-pilot mode.
G.I. Joe all over again....

AVOID!

First ten minutes of the movie: http://vk.com/video247089797_168116777

At least it opens with Silvestri's theme!

I don't know why that's such a big deal to me, but nice! I had higher than zero hopes when Tyler used it in Thor 2.

Movie starts off well, but once he descends onto the ship, it starts with that whole goddamn MediaVentures stuff and all I'm reminded of is the opening to Metal Gear Solid 2. Sigh.

Yes one short traditional cue called The Smithsonian in a score full of lengthy modern action cues redeems it.

What's all this I hear about contemporary films getting contemporary scores that sound like other scores of the period?

This is an outrage! Why, that's not the history of movie music at all, um, oh wait, yes it is.

nevermind

Okay, I have listened to the whole score now. And my first impression: it´s okay. Nothing special, nothing terrible. Jackman creates some emotional moments and some terrifying soundscapes - they will work for the movie.

I was hoping for more, of course. But the score can be enjoyed nevertheless.

It won´t convert anyone who hates this kind of scoring. But it does not have to.

Oh, and since the two directors of this film will return for part three, the composer seems to be set as well...

Sounds pretty much like his G.I. Joe effort which had a couple of good moments, but nowhere near as fun as Silvestri's orchestra/synth combo action writing (though his score for the first Captain America was mostly orchestral). From the samples I hear Jackman is still using the Tron Legacy formula in "Taking a stand" as he did in Retaliation. He seems to mimic what is hip and current, but on its own it's not always worth a listen. It's a shame Silvestri couldn't score all of these Marvel movies!

Kudos to Jackman for quoting Silvestris theme at the start of the film. Anyone catch that Marvel show last night? Seemed they only used Tylers music throughout. Even against older film clips which was interesting.

Silvestris theme was in the first 10 minutes of the film that popped up online... Was that not really from the film? Maybe it was just not on the soundtrack...

Thanks for sharing your insight regarding the mess that is the current blockbuster film scoring scene.

Hmm. No stars at all?

That is, IMO, just pure hatred and not a balanced critical assessment.

Of course, everything is subjective and every reviewer has to right to his/her personal opinion. But while I enjoy reading that particular critic´s reviews in general, he just despises the MV sound (with few exceptions).

Let me state again that I adore the Silver Age composers. But I have come around on the contemporary way of film scoring and do find it enjoyable at times. Jackman´s score to "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is one of those that I do like.

Having said that, right now I´m listening to Alexandre Desplat´s "Grand Hotel Budapest". It´s possible to enjoy many things for what they are.

It's possible - you hear Cap'n A's theme in The Avengers the movie but not on the soundtrack album.

I think no stars is a tad too harsh, but hey if you can't stomach the electronics, which is basically what this score is... I do agree with "There’s even an attempt at times to inject some emotion – what a foolhardy, old-fashioned concept of what a film score might be used to do – with a vaguely elegiac theme that crops up now and then on strings and piano."; I always feel with these type of scores that that is almost like a concession to inject the dead RC score with some hint of life or emotion. I can see the producers, director and composer going 'ah shit, do we have to use a traditional theme, that is so corny and definitely not done!'.

The physical CD is coming from Intrada, Roger has confirmed on their board - no release date announced yet. Now, I know Intrada have pulled miracles out of the hat before, so is it in the realm of possibility that they are releasing the actual score to Cap 2, the one that was actually done by Alan Silvestri?

What are you talking about? As far as I knew Jackman was on board from the start, I don't think Alan was ever attached.

It is on the soundtrack, but damned if I know the track. Maybe the "Assemble" cue, or one of the other cues pertaining to the destruction of a city while a giant laser thing shoots into space and opens a portal of some kind.

I was being facetious, knowing all the negative attention Jackman's score is getting. Silvestri was never on board - I was just making a joke. Although I will say it's interesting Brian Tyler has just been announced as the second Avengers composer; I have my fingers crossed that there's still time to throw Tyler Bates off Guardians of the Galaxy if enough negative feedback is received from Captain America 2.

While I am happy that these scores do get released, judging from the reviews I'm not sure if this is a score I want to spend 20 bucks on. I'll have to give the samples a whirl and possibly check out some tracks on YouTube.
