Good grief... well, at least this thread has pretty much gone to the crapper just as expected, so it isn't really a surprise big grin

As much as I hate to use Ford's favorite phrase, the "fanboy" BS is really irritating.

This must be as far as I am concerned the most disappointing batch of Club titles EVER!

Other than Star Trek (which wasn't even on my wish list, but I'll go for it), the rest are just not the kind of scores deserving of the prestigious "Club" label. To throw in one of these in the batch, so we can sort of discover a composer like that Nuno Malo guy, I guess it's ok. But where are all these favorite composers of ours and all these scores that only Varese has the right to, that are crying for expanded editions (Gremlins 2, Starship Troopers, Outbreak, On Deadly Ground, Predator 2, etc.)?

You do realize that as stated in Varese's announcement leading up to this, there was only "1" Club release. The other releases are from the limited edition series and feature scores to recent movies. Go to Varese's website, see the distinction between the two?

People read "Varese batch" and immediately assume they are all club releases. Varese hasn't been releasing solely club releases for a while now. They are always paired with limited edition that have a smaller appeal hence the 1000-1500 limitation on those...

It really helps to read this thread or even Varese's announcement:

July 27, 2014
NEW CD CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT HOURS AWAY!
It's time to release some more film music. A special release from the Varèse CD Club, along with some new releases in our Limited Edition series will be announced Monday, July 28. Same time. Same place.

Varese has failed to live up to their reputation. I just don't know who these obscure titles would appeal to?? Varese has gone down hill for some time now! Anyone who buys these ridiculous titles are supporting Varese in a negative way.

I agree RM. And with the new owner I don't expect much in the future. frown

PS: Take a look at the cover to Haunt. Guess this is the future of Varese.
So it goes with the next generation........

I happen to like the Haunt release and Varese has been doing a lot of great horror releases in their limited series (Fernando Velázquez' Devil another excellent release). They've also released excellent recent horror scores in their regular catalogue (Tomandandy's The Apparition, Mark Killian's Ward, Marco Beltrami's The Thing & Scream 4). Don't see anything wrong with this personally. But then again, I try to keep an open mind and don't judge a book by its cover.

I just want to add these Varese threads seem to get a lot of ... euhm seasoned board members out of the woodwork who seem a tad enamored by the club releases as they were a decade ago. Where have you all been the last years? Varese has been doing these type of batches (club/limited) on and off for a while now yet some of you act as if they are still solely doing club releases quarterly. You are aware there are now other labels such as La-la Land also doing releases and Intrada which has stepped up their game as well? wink

Isn't that a bit negative? If you listen to some of the sound clips you'll find that it's not all without merit...MSM puts out lovely obscure stuff like this all the time. And they aren't Club releases, just still "Limited Edition" releases.

I just wish they put out more actual Club releases and expanded most of their perpetuity scores. I share your frustration there.

I love Club releases too but they did announce one club and the rest limited edition series.

Oops I forgot, there is a group that not only doesn't like the Limited Edition series but reading.

True but I for one can't keep up with all the "special signifiers" various labels give their releases. I read a special batch is coming and anticipate a possible "holy grail" in the batch. I really couldn't care less what a limited or club title means. Same with Intrada with Excalibur, Special Collection, Signature, etc. I don't have a clue. Some of us have far more important things we need to learn on a daily basis and distinctions between label releases isn't one of them.

I have listened to the sound clips and they sound like the re-recording (interpretations) that the BSX label has been doing. I do not care for that type of score or performance, so I have passed on these Varese Limited edition titles. I am thinking about getting caught up on some of my Intrada releases that I have passed over on since they are on sale. Sorry Varese, my money is going somewhere else this time.

That's exactly what I did today. Placed a rather large order with Intrada.

I can completely understand if it's the actual MUSIC, the composition you aren't a fan of as that is your opinion and we all like what we like. smile

Now if it's the quality of the recording/sound, please keep in mind these are on sound cloud so the quality is compressed and it's NO WHERE near what you will hear on an actual CD.

I think Buysoundtrax has been doing pretty good with their re-recordings of cues and scores and such.

We get so many great great releases from ALL the labels. I try to get as many as I can and if you or someone isn't interested in these, please grab some other discs you may want from another label. Often times, Intrada may not have something you like and you pick up an extra from the fine folks at La-La Land, or Varèse. We are so fortunate to have so many great releases thrown our way. I want people to get the music they LIKE and will enjoy and listen to for years, if these aren't it, maybe next time there will something you like.

I have NOT listened to all the discs yet, but I will say the No God, No Master had me say, WHO is Nuno Malo? I liked the clips we were given and I hope to give is a full listen tonight.

Above all, it's great we have differing opinions, but like I said, it's all in how you say it. A lot of work goes into each release whether it's Varèse's limited editions or club discs or regular issues or La-La Land's wonderful Archival discs or Intrada's special collection series and a lot of people are giving it their all.

I would like to hear more of this..."ahhh, not interested in these releases, but I'm happy to read several folks were happy to get them!" Often times I'm not interested in a release from a label, but hearing folks say, YES and FINALLY, I can't wait to get this or that, makes me actually feel good that they are getting something they've been wanting. We should be happy for those folks who are getting something and hopefully in the future real soon there will be a release that Varèse you may want to pick up or from Intrada or Kritzerland or La-La Land or Persevearance Records etc. etc.

smile

The samples are still better than the soundcloud crap that they have been putting out for previewing other more recent scores. And you can tell quite a lot from the sound on there, enough to know if you will like the release. I don't think it is at all unfair if someone doesn't like the sound there to skip it. I can tell that the other releases, such as Haunt and Wicked Blood aren't my thing enough from these so they do a good job.

The problem with such an experiment is the aforementioned "expectation value". One of these miracles is pulled off, and before you know it, some here will require it on a regular basis. Expectations exceed reality, resulting in a symphony of "wah Varese no do as me foresaw wah".

True enough; but that really wouldn't be very different than some of the harsh comments Varese seems to be getting presently. And at least that way, a few of those in perpetuity titles could get released now and then. Even if it were only 3-5 titles in the course of a year, it would be miles ahead of the release schedule Varese seems to be on right now.

With STID out of the way (and I say that as a hardcore Trek fan), hopefully the next Club release will tackle the likes of Gremlins 2 or Addams Family Values.

Except that it wasn't a 'batch' and the non ST releases are NOT "Club" titles.

But you can't seem to know how to read so I doubt this post will be comprehensible to you.

Pretty cool Varèse is shipping discs the day after the announcement, huh? That two week wait before they ship never happened this time around. That's something positive, right?!!!!

The soundcloud bit rates, according to those I've spoken with at the label, are the same rates they've used in the past. Soundcloud is awesome for putting clips on any site with ease. I know I use them on projects I've worked on and nobody has complained.

When I read all the nasty comments from some of these "Fans" I feel for my artist friends who work hard on their music for people to enjoy.

What is with the nastiness? Nobody claimed Varese was putting out more than ONE "club" release this time around yet people keep confusing the limited edition releases as club for some strange reason.

I wonder what artists who lurk here must think about us "fans" who have nothing nice to say about music that, while it may not appeal to them, may appeal to others?

All I have to say is wow.

I'm not a fan of the Giacchino Trek scores, so that's nto for me.

Tried samples on Cmiral's site for "Wicked Blood" -- did nothing for me.

Never heard a Reinhold Heil work I liked, skipped it.

That's just left Malo. Soundcloud isn't working for me and there are no samples (that I see) on his website.

Thought I'd mention all 3 of these obscure films (plus that space movie, whatever that is), are all on Netflix streaming.
