Hoping I don't sidetrack your thread, Neo,

Impossible in the extremis.

I would like to add the following - taken from the sleeve notes of the album By Request and repeated in the book enclosed with the 4-disc set The Singer's Singer, one of the many tributes to the late, great Mr. Monro is this by Mr. Barry:

"Dear Matt, I still hear you singing"
.

Wunderbar. And, as a salute to your hosanna, we were gonna save this for a coupla years down the Barry line but consider it an early Christmas present:

May you and yours have a healthy, happy, harmonious (and, above all, safe) one also ... smile

Where's this pic from Neo?

p.s. Keep up the great work, this is such an enjoyable thread.

This is the centrefold of a booklet of a Matt Monro CD that was issued round about 1990. I forget the title. It's almost certainly from the Born Free recording.

Cheers

Muchos gracias, Stephen; you echoed some of our suspicions where (and when) the photo session took place but it's always nifty to know other enterprising (and far more knowledgable) entities such as yourself are authoritatively around ... smile

I beg to differ, Stephen, but surely the photo' is from a date later than the 1965/6 Born Free recordings.

Firstly, the image of Mr. Barry (hair-style) is much more in keeping with photo's of him late 60s/early 70s - refer to the cover of his album The Concert John Barry; and

Secondly, a photo' of Don Black with Dean Martin at the awards ceremony (each holding an Oscar) described as being "the photograph Don Black sent Matt from the night of the Oscars, Born Free, pictured with Dean Martin" shows Mr. Black looking somewhat younger than in the above photo'. (re: Matt Monro: The Singer's Singer 4CD set - hardback book)

My guess is that the above photo' comes from the time of Matt Monro recording a couple of the songs from the Barry-Black musical Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (or possibly the vocal versions of themes from Mary, Queen Of Scots) - 1972.

You may be right of course. Dating photos is not an exact science! Barry looks younger than this in the You Only Live Twice session photos. So that supports your suggestion.

On the other hand, Barry of 69,70,71 seemed to wear his hair quite long. And if you look at the pictures of Barry, Tom Jones and Don Black from the Thunderball sessions; and the photo of Barry and Bassey at the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang session, Barry does look quote close to this photo here. That said, the glasses may be the real giveaway. When Barry is photographed in glasses around the 1965/6 era, they tend to be dark rimmed, plastic framed.

Bottom line: I'm not really sure, you could well be right, and, looking at the glasses, perhaps you are. Geoff may know for sure. Does anyone have the CD to hand? Does it say in that? Unfortunately my copy of this CD is one of many that was stolen from my house circa 1994.

Cheers

I agree with MusicMad.

I have to say that when I first saw this picture I assumed that it was from the early 70s when Matt Monro was recording songs from Alice's Adventures and MQOS. Barry looks more mature than he does in pictures from mid 60's though Steve's point about the length of Barry's hair in 69-71 is a good one but I think this is more likely to be later i.e 1972/3

The glasses make me think this is the early 70s rather than the mid 60s.

Based on other dated photos I have, it's from around 1968/9, though admittedly that doesn't coincide with a collaboration between the three of them - at least, not one we know about.

Evidently, it has something to do with an English professor deciding there are far too many useless people in the world so he invents a gas that will kill them off - only first they'll at least have a good laugh. (Gee, darn decent of him, eh, wot?) eek

Well, okay, why not?

IMO the picture of Barry with Jane Birkin taken in 1965 in the Vanity Fair article is further evidence that the Barry/Munro/Black picture is not at the Born Free sessions but much later, probably 1972/3.

I think he's with his third wife, Jane Sidey.

They were married from 1969 to 1971. They don't look too happy!

Here's a colour shot (not great quality) from Alice's Adventures. No it's not - I'll try and add it later!

Yes, many years ago ... only faint memories of laughing a few times at this black comedy ... very English in style (humour).

I can't recall now whether I watched it because I knew it had music by Mr. Barry ... probably yes, as I've been seeking out his music for nearly 40 years!

Most blokes looked like girls in the 70's. That hairstyle is straight out of a 70's cardigan catalogue.

Not having caught up with this one yet, what generally seems most significant about it (aside from continuing his collaboration with Mr. Hamilton) is the inaugural top-lining of the star presages John’s more memorable music for their second significant stint a year hence

Another Sincere SOS Solicitation Department:

Those of you unheralded heroes (or heroines) Out Thar who’ve seen these early (or any) Barry efforts, please feel fabulously free to add your own comments and perceptions as we blithely advance along the years of his still-aborning career.

As to that, we’re remorsely remiss in not having caught many of the cinematic forays on which John cut his creative teeth so, again, don’t be bashful – we wanna know what you think and how you feel (and, no, that doesn’t automatically include you out, Asgardian wink)
