Are there any feature films in which the overture is lost or missing?

Thanks to restoration work for DVD releases most Overtures can now be heard for the first time in decades, such as Rozsa's QUO VADIS. Off hand, the only one I can think of which isn't on the DVD or CD is Kaper's LORD JIM. I saw the film when it opened in 70mm at the Odeon Leicester Square and thought it had an Overture but maybe I'm misremembering. Did anyone else remember an Overture?

Doug, I didn't start at the Odeon Leicester Square until 1980 and the longest serving Projectionist currently still there started in 1973 so I don't really know anybody who would remember but given the period and the care that roadshow presentations were put together, I'd be very surprised if it didn't open with an Overture.

Good to meet you in October and a very Happy New Year to you.

The book "Wide Screen Movies" by Carr and Hayes makes no mention of an overture for "Lord Jim." The book usually mentions the extra music if a roadshow film had some. However, both the book and the American Film Institute catalog note that there was a time difference between the roadshow prints (154 minutes, not counting intermission) and the general release prints (143 minutes, with no intermission). Often, the time reduction for a general release print is made by deleting the overture, entr'acte, and exit music from the roadshow version. Here, since the current DVD is listed as running the full roadshow length of 154 minutes, if the DVD does not contain an overture, it's likely that the roadshow prints did not have one either.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but overture means movie begins, music at same time and then titles? Or literally as curtains opening?

Love when tv shows start with music, teaser, then titles.

Usually, an overture (i.e., music) is played with the curtains closed. (There have been exceptions, such as "West Side Story" and "Dancer In the Dark" where the overture played to a slide or visible animation on the screen.) When the overture music is completed, the curtains begin to open as the film company logo appears on the screen. By the time the main title or opening sequence of the film begins, the curtains should be fully open.

LORD JIM as presented in its NYC Roadshow engagement at Loew's State Theatre did not have an overture. It did have an intermission and I 'believe' there was an Entr'acte.

The "Lord Jim" soundtrack album has a 3 minute track on it called "Intermission" that may well be the Entr'acte.

I always skip them on dvd. it seems silly to sit there watching nothing. And let's face it - they were designed to sell popcorn

Well, Intermissions may have sold some popcorn, but I doubt that Overtures ever sold a single extra box of popcorn. The Overture signals patrons that it's time to enter the theater, not to lag around the concession stand.

They are a single to settle into your seat as the lights dim in anticipation of the start of the picture.

Ben-Hur does not have exit music. Never did.
Spartacus does have exit music.

No mention of Barabbas which did have an Overture and Entr'acte during its brief Roadshow run at the DeMille Theatre in NYC. The DVD does not have this additional music.

Becket had both an Overture and Entr'acte music during Intermission during it's Roadshow run in NYC. The restored DVD and Blu-ray do not include this music.
