Happy and appreciative of this release

but wasn't there anything else they could come up with but THE PRIZE for bonus tracks?

Clearly, it was something they already had the rights to. It could have been dead space on the CD. Instead, they threw something on. You're free to hit "STOP."

Why can't you just be happy and appreciate this?

Okay, you talked me into it.

POLTERGEIST is one of the best scores Mr. Goldsmith ever composed!

I bought the Sony/Rhino CD with 68 minutes earlier this year for just $ 7 and it sounds great.

Sorry, but I won't spend $ 25 + transport for just 21 minutes of sound effects and alternate music.

But I wish you guys lots of fun with this! wink

Well, I bought this the moment it came out first on cd. And despite the fact that a few alternates were already inlcuded back then and I still missed the short LP version. So getting this album again just to hear the edited version and dont forget that this version has better and improved mastering on the whole makes it worth it.

Just curious- why did you buy this when its was informed that this better 2cd set was coming out?

Amer

Because it contains the complete score which did cost me in total only $ 7 and to be honest there is nothing to complain about the sound quality of the Sony CD. wink

The new material found for The Prize was worthy of release but obviously it was short and it needed another MGM title to accompany. This was the right opportunity. It's really great music and puts Jerry's development as a composer in perspective. Plus, if you don't own Powder you won't have any alphabetizing issues.

This honestly made me laugh out loud. (But I refuse to write "LOL"!)

I prefer omission than something I don't want at all, myself. I've skipped or sold quite a number of discs because of stuff like that (this isn't one of those cases though).

After all. no one is forcing anyone to buy it. and saying "I don't like this" AND not buying it is really the only way ANY of us have to express our dissatisfaction with the product isn't it?

The original cd has a great deal of hiss and certain non- orchestral noises that were not cleaned out " warts and all" and these are now hopefuly addressed in todays standards. But if youre okay with the original or its re-issue due to cost then its fine. Come to think of it- if it was not re-issued by FSM it would be still cosidered a fine re-issue. Overall the sonics are pretty good than most new issues today and it gave us all great listening pleasure all these years.

The sound on the Rhino disc is pretty lousy, so I'm very much looking forward to the remaster. The LP version is a very worthwhile addition, there are some different choices there.

Ordered, of course, along with A Man Called Horse and North Dallas Forty.

What is wrong with the sound on the Rhino? Have not listened in a long time, but I recall liking the sound.
The FSM Release is great ,BUT , I find Nothing wrong with the Rino release. The sound quality is good, seems like there is never a problem with the sound quality until a remastered edition comes along. As far as I am concerned, the Rino edition will do just fine, thanks very much. I really do not want to buy music I already have.

So the Rhino disc contains the complete score from the film, right? If so, I think I'll pass on this release as I'm not really interested in alternative versions of cues from scores. (I've still not listened to the alternative cues on the second disc of Back to the Future despite listening to the first disc quite a few times.)

To be fair, there were compaints about the sound quality on the Rhino since the day it was released. Plus FSM's package includes the original album which is a completely different entity.

The FSM is essential.

Actually, there have been many complaints about the sound quality on the Rhino edition since the day it came out way back when. Don't forget, some of us owned the superior-sounding LP for many years, and so the Rhino's offering was a significant downgrade in that department, even if it did restore many important cues. If you don't have a problem with it (I'm not sure how) that's fine, but I remember receiving a copy at the Tower Records I worked at, getting excited and popping it on and being disappointed at the sonics.

Having the original lp presentation on cd alone is well worth $25, I should think. Thanks FSM - I have two copies of the original lp that are probably about to disintegrate into vinyl onion rings, that's how often I played them.

But wow! I was starting to think that we might not see this CD set until next year. Bravo to FSM!smile

Scoresalot's avatar is AWESOME!big grin Needs a tennis ball.

Do you do those in After Effects?

As these are relatively short, 200 frames of which about 90 are animated, I do them frame by frame (yes I am old school in this regard). Each frame I manipulate in Photoshop (changing 'inner shadow', 'outer glow', transparency of each seperate layer, and adding lens flare). The tricky part for this animation was the 'other side' clouds effect, which I had to use an existing animated gif of thunderstorm clouds for and insert it frame by frame to get that cool effect. Once the frames are done, I just import the lot into Ulead Gif Animator and save as a moving gif.

It's fun to work on while listening to a good Goldsmith score (in this case Star Trek V).

On-topic, the samples for FSM's Poltergeist sound great and even the bonus material has some great appeal; I rarely get to disc 2 with all the latest releases, but I'm sure Poltergeist wont have that problem!

I showed it to some friends and we've been going around like banshees making "swooshy laser sounds" timed with the avatar as it goes in and out of the "other side". Very sad.big grin

NICE!!

Awesome.

You should post all of your GIFs sometime. The Predator one was sweet too.

Interesting about "Wild Percussion", because I'd always wondered what that sound in "Twisted Abduction" was. You can clearly hear the same sound at 4:37 into the cue. It's always freaked me out because it sounded like Jerry was torturing a box full of puppies.

Exactly right. If you're not familiar with how phenomenal sounding the Poltergeist LP was, then you'd probably be ok with the Rhino release. Like Swashbuckler, I was crushed when I heard the Rhino release, all the shimmering higher end sonics were absent...it just sounded dead in comparison. When FSM announced they were working on this I was so relieved that we would finally have the entire score sounding as close to the warmth and clarity of that LP as possible. The samples sound like Bruce and Mike nailed it...and they're only mp3's!

I knew it was too good to be true.

Oh well, I still have the digital rip I made from my near mint condition copy of the original LP.

Whilst the Rhino CD may have considerably more music from the score, I nine times out of ten will listen to the far superior quality of the LP.

In addition, that was literally the day before Lukas announced this release.

I remember the choir also being more muted on the Rhino release. Faint and flat; not nearly the force as in the LP mix. Can't wait to hear the new CD.
