I'm so pleased so many people here are giving the thumbs up to this set! All too often its a group of people angry that its not something weirdly specific only two people in the world would ever want.

The only people who should be angry live in CA where they have to pay 18 bucks of tax on top of the fifteen bucks shipping (unless they go pick it up). smile

Wow! This takes me back to when LPs began disappearing and CDs became the standard. This label Varese came up with a club where you could obtain exclusive limited run releases. There were titles like THE REIVERS, THE WILD GEESE, STARS 'N BARS, THE BURBS and VIBES. But the most impressive was a whole box of Herrmann called Concert Suites. It was produced through the associated Masters of Film Music by that new guy from Canada Robert Townson. All the London recordings in one place and with a book too! That was 1989. A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Herrmann at Fox. I feel like a youngster again.

There have been fantastic releases over the years, but this has to be my favorite of all time.

Thank you Varese! You have no idea.

Ah, yes! -- The MFM Herrmann box. I've treasured mine for years, and while I'll have to play the breaks on the new Varese ($200 is reasonable, but my wallet currently hurts a little too much), I'm thrilled to see that they've run with the baton. Great work, guys.

cool

Where are you guys getting these figures ("468 left")? I don't see such a notation on Varese's CD Club site.

ToneRow, if I need to stay alive until Herrmann's 200th birthday to get a complete OBSESSION, then I'll simply will myself to hang around that long. However, the composer's centenary is still in effect for the first few months of 2012, so I shall remain ever hopeful. Ditto for a Bernard Herrmann at Universal box set, too.

I think what you do is order 468 copies at the website and at the point they are unable to fill your order that is what they have left.

Indeed, Bruce - which is why I plan to pick mine up, then go eat pancakes at Du-Par's.

I think Benny would have wanted it that way. cool

I'm picking it up, too. I convinced myself that makes the whole thing a bargain!

Sorry to see that the product info fails to mention that I did a complete ground-up new restoration, mix & assembly on The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Mike

No good deed goes unpunished ;-)

Thanks for the great work, and for the clarification, Mike! A grateful tip of the hat to Nick, Julie and Bob, as well!

(In any case, I bought first, and asked questions later.)

Very, very tempting.

What was the Jerry Goldsmith at 20th Century Fox Set initially priced at?

Exactly right, just type in the qty box that you want 700, then add to cart and you'll be prompted that only a certain number are available....450 just a minute ago.

Face it, it's the price, not the content people are fussing over.

Everyone is different. I could afford the $200 to spend if I if was something I wanted to buy, but I wouldn't even buy this set for $20, for reasons I stated in the other thread.

This is a really tempting set. I have many of the scores in this set, either in original form (Journey, Reef) or as re-recordings (5Fingers, Snows, Earth, Muir) and honestly generally prefer the sound of the re-recordings (Herrmann seems to re-record well to my ear), so I'll pass.

However, that doesn't mean that the set isn't a top notch production and a great bargain and I really applaud Varese for their effort. I doubt if they'll reap much (if any) profit from it, given what it must have cost to produce.

Part of the reason for that sentiment is the preservation aspect of the set. I'd love to see this set be a part of major library collections and available to the public. Do film music publishers ever donate recordings for posterity's sake? This would definitely be one release that should qualify. I'd put in a purchase request for my own University to see if they'd bite on the set, but it'll almost certainly be sold out by the time this sells out.

Anyways, Varese takes a lot of crap sometimes, in part because they're absent on the film music boards, but they really do need to be commended on this (and many other fantastic releases) they put out. If a Varese rep is reading this, well done. You've done a great service to the film music community

Chris.

I really do wish this set was something I could afford. Especially because I've been wanting Hangover Square for years. Oh, well... I think it's an awesome release and it IS priced fairly, I just can't do it. Hope you all enjoy it, those who do get it!
