The well-performed re-recording is sabotaged by horribly stressed sound in the loud passages. One need look no further than Track 1 for the first of several examples. Try the few seconds from 3:15 to the end of the track through headphones. It's the audio comfort equivalent of three people sharing the same seat in a passenger plane. Maybe people with short legs won't mind as much as others though.
My opinion is that the re-recording has some of the most cramped high-powered orchestral reproduction I've heard in years, in total contrast to all Tadlow's other magnificent releases, including the excellent Conan the Destroyer.

IMHO, perhaps a hearing test is in order?

Because that clearly isn't the CD I'm playing and it appears to be the same recording.

I have to agree. The Tadlow recording is wonderful and made the over twenty year wait worth it. I wouldn't mind getting the Intrada release, but I'll probably just stick with my Tadlow copy.

My sentiments as well. I also notice that, obvious though it is, the rerecording sounds differently through different listening mediums. I much prefer listening to it through Sennheiser PX mk 2 headphones. They are slightly bass heavy but if from an iPod I just use the EQ bass reducer which gives, for me at least, a perfect listening experience.

Did this ship for everyone who bought it on release day? It's been almost a week and my order is still pending fulfillment...

I bought it on release day and it was fulfilled the next day but I have yet to get the CDs in the mail. It has only been 7 days so I am not totally worried yet. I did expect to have it by now. Hopefully tomorrow!

I own the Tadlow recording and I agree with most... the sound is rather shrill when it gets LOUD and while I agree with a good set of headphones you are able to deal with some of this, it isn't all that much help no matter what sound set up you use.

THE DESTROYER on the other hand sounds AMAZING so I don't know who is to "blame."

Now, the Intrada release is wonderful and everything I had hoped... except I have been spoiled by Tadlow.

Now when the Tadlow release came out, it sounded... OFF to me. It might have been Basil's preference but I don't know...something wasn't right with it but fuck it, it grew on me and I've loved it ever since.

I still kept the VS album for its RAW power and now with the Intrada release... I can't seem to help feel that it should sound "better" even though it probably is at its best.

I don't know how else to describe it.

I'm glad to own both and now I'm going to have to re-adjust myself to the original score but thankfully...that should take a week.

Glad I never bought the re-recordings. Bring on the originals! Looking forward to Destroyer too.

That is your loss the re-recording is absolutely brilliant. However the Intrada 3 CD edition is essential too. I'm hearing an awful lot of negativity about the Intrada; "it;s to long", "can't afford it", "I'm going to wait", "don't like the tinny sound" etc. etc. The original soundtrack is a masterpiece, you people are never satisfied? The Intrada edition is a massive achievement of a great score.

And I don't know what kind of stereo systems you have, but the Tadlow does not sound distorted(shrill) played loud, to me it sounds tremendous.

Yes, the excellence of Destroyer makes the congested sound of Barbarian tracks like Anvil of Crom and Riders of Doom all the more annoying. I can't bear to listen to it. I try every now and then, telling myself the performance itself is terrific and worthy of giving the sound yet another try, but it's just a wall of crushed-up noise to my ears. The only time I was encouraged was listening on a very ordinary car stereo – there's something very forgiving about those things I've never really understood!
But I've listened to parts of it in a $30,000+ audio setup in a specialist high-end audio showroom in San Francisco, and while it sounded better than in my relatively feeble system, it still sounded very congested compared to the other orchestral discs being played (including, I might add, the same label's "The Alamo" which sounded unbelievably wonderful and spectacular).

It is interesting that some people have found the listening experience from the Tadlow Barbarian not to their liking. I don't know how to account for this either. I suppose it is difficult to subtract the inherent subjectivity of the listening experience from a critical analysis.

I do know what you mean about the different sound of Destroyer. But if I recall correctly, were there not two different microphone regimes employed for each recording?

Personally, as I have said before, I find nothing uncomfortable about the Barbarian recording.

I certainly do not know, but either the recording sessions were miked differently, or it is in the mastering (mixing) after it was recorded. The playing is first rate on Barbarian just as it is with Destroyer, but something is different. Either way, it was a great project and I am so thankful that Tadlow did it.

I ordered this along with what I believe was Intrada's last copy of White Fang.

I have (& love) the Tadlow rerecordings of both Conan scores. The Barbarian is my favorite all time film score & I have a lot of favorites.
As much as I enjoy them, the original recordings of "Atlantean Sword" & "Orphans of Doom/The Awakening", even with sound quality issues, move me emotionally while the rerecordings are just clear, precise versions.

The new Intrada is too much to even ask for & to hear the tracks mentioned above in such good quality is mind blowing. I also enjoy the inclusion of the original album ending with "Orhans of Doom/The Awakening", the perfect ending to any presentation of this amazing score.

Thank you to both Tadlow & Intrada for the fantastic attention theses scores have received.

Here's my selection of tracks for a perfect 79.5 minute CD. There are a number of tracks over the 2 discs that can be considered "source cues" and a couple of redundant cues so I've cut the 108 minute score down to 79.

1) Prologue/Anvil of Crom
2) Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom
3) Gift of Fury
4) Column of Sadness/Wheel of Pain
5) Pit Fights
6) Atlantean Sword (This is track 5 from disc 3. Sounds better than disc 1 version)
7) Theology/Civilization
8) The Snake/Infidels
9) Wifeing
10) The Leaving/The Search
11) Mountain of Power Procession
12) Capture
13) Tree of Woe/Recovery
14) Warpaint
15) The Kitchen/The Orgy
16) Funeral Pyre
17) Battle of the Mounds Part 1
18) Battle of the Mounds Part 2
19) Battle of the Mounds Part 3/Night Doom
20) Head Chop
21) Orphans of Doom/The Awakening

Long tracks such as "The Defilers" and "End Title" are repeats of the Main Title so I left them out.

Kudos to Intrada for this wonderful set and the improved sound quality.

6) Atlantean Sword (This is track 5 from disc 3. Sounds better than disc 1 version)

I prefer the warmer sound of all the album tracks on Disc 3 to their counterparts on the first two discs.

Mine arrived yesterday, and I was able to listen to it while out driving.

I had only heard samples before, but liked them enough to buy this. Wow, what a fantastic score! This was actually my first Basil Poledouris CD, and I really enjoyed it!

Basil Poledouris is one of the masters of film music ! If Barbarian was your first Poledouris CD, all I would say is do yourself a favor and if you can pick up some more. Conan The Destroyer, Farewell To The King, Wind, Starship Troopers, The Blue Lagoon, On Deadly Ground, Hot Shots Part Deux, It's My Party, Under Seige 2, Flesh + Blood, Robo Cop 1 and 3, Switchback and The Touch (if you can find one) The Jungle Book, Lassie, For Love Of The Game, Cherry 2000, Red Dawn, White Fang, Quigly Down Under, and Lonesome Dove to name a few !!! It is hard to go wrong with any Poledouris release. The man was a truly awesome talent and if you ever get to see the last concert he did before his untimely death, a wonderful person !
