I'm trying to decide between the disc and the MP3s. The $4 digital price is trying to tempt me, but I have so much Giacchino on DISC (which looks lovely together on my shelf! ) that I hate to end it now ... I think in this case it comes down to packaging / liner notes. Can anyone who has the disc vouch for the liners are being informative / REALLY pretty, and worth getting for that? (Or even post a quick photo?)
I'm crazy-excited to hear this one, but think I'll try to hold out until the midnight IMAX showing.
You should never spend money on MP3s, especially since when the actual CD is only $5 more expensive.
Well, there we go - cancelled from Bestbuy (they had it changed to 'backorder' and didn't even send me an email to let me know!) and went with Amazon. Hard to beat them in terms of service. I should have it in a few.
Well, ain't that a kick in the nuts? Thanks for the heads up, though. I'll remember to never pre-order anything from Best Buy.
The odd thing is, the reason I DID order from Best Buy is that I got MI: Ghost Protocol on its release date. I have no idea why the two orders ended up so differently.

I'm guessing that they underestimated demand and, ironically, didn't pre-order enough copies themselves!
Despite Giacchino's best intentions to ruin it all with some of the worst track titles since his last outing (the exciting Mission: Impossible 4), this is a terrific album from him. It's been playing all day for me alongside the Mass Effect 3 score (which was a big pain in the butt to download through BioWare's social site). I am anxiously anticipating seeing the film this weekend. Any word on the validity of the 3-D in this one? I might make the extra effort to support Andrew Stanton's vision of ERB's Barsoom stories.

Giacchino doesn't think up all of the puns for the track titles.
My CD just showed up from Amazon! Getting ready to put this in rip it to MP3 and give it my first listen.
I don't know if that's a joke, but if not, you got hosed!
Um...why?
If you bought the CD for 10 dollars to just rip it to MP3, you could've just paid $4 for the MP3 and cut out "all that" work.
Buying a CD and ripping it to MP3 is not the same as just buying MP3s, in the end he still has the CD.
EXACTLY. I rip it to MP3 to put on my laptop and ipod, and I listen to the CD in the car and the stereo at home. I would rather pay 10 dollars to actually hold a physical CD in my hand than pay 4 dollars for an MP3 download.
Mine is still "shipping soon" Bah, I'm jealous. I was hoping I could import it to iTunes on the day of the movie's release to make it...I dunno, special
(I could always just change the date if it matters that much ^_^ )
Unfortunately I think the download sold by Amazon was poorly encoded to MP3. There is a strange wavering quality to the volume level of certain elements in the lower dynamic range. Listen to the first 30 seconds of 'Barsoom Is The Prize' on headphones and you'll hear a great example, but I heard it crop up in many places throughout the album.
I have encountered this same issue once before with bought MP3s-- it was when eMusic went live with a huge catalog addition of Universal titles. People quickly noticed the new Universal offerings sounded weird, especially on choral and solo piano music. It turned out that while the bit rate was fine, eMusic had encoded the MP3s with an outdated codec (Frauenhofer instead of LAME), and, much more damagingly, had done so with the fastest encoding settings. I think something similar happened here. It sounds the same to my ears. The bitrate is high but something is very off.
The score is great! But these files suck. And I say that as someone who happily listens to MP3s all the time.
Got my Amazon pre-ordered copy Tuesday on the day of release which is the norm from them (and at a nice price without tax or shipping). Of course I didn't see it at my front door until this morning as I was leaving for work. I forgot to check when I got home yesterday darn it!
