I was disappointed to see that James Horner was not attached to this movie - always disappointed when the opportunity to expand a developed theme is thrown away - but I thought the Zimmer score worked well in the film.

Is it me - or does Zimmers' Spider-Man theme sound VERY Horner-like?

it is not just you. when that first clip appeared I had to do a little side by side listen. it's a pretty seamless imitation or take which is probably good for a sequel. not to mention, I thought, horner did a pretty amazing job first time around. so once again, no surprise, that theme is really doing it for me. love the ending of "you're that spider guy". zimmer appears to have checked off that box and then some. overall I'm enjoying this a lot more than man of steel. a slightly more straight-through listening experience with only minor detours into all out crazed, pop experimentation mode.

Agreed on all of this. My favorite cut is definitely "I Need To Know" followed by "You're That Spider Guy". (I find myself skipping "My Enemy" pretty much all the time though.)

Not only Zimmer's theme sound like Horner's in a section, but kind of like Horner's hornerisms, and that has nothing to do with Zimmer own way of writing...

So I guess it's pretty obvious that this was intentional from Zimmer. He pulled some of Horner's way of rendering the theme to his own theme.

Of course there are no Hornerisms in this fantastic job. Only Zimmerisms.
People here complained for no Williams-theme in MoS (proving that they don't listen to carefully since MoS is full of themes) and now complain for this not-original coplandesque theme.

Which by the way is put with the intention to tease haters.

Let me update myself... HATE the packaging big grin. A huge oversized digi-pack, the track titles are only on a backing slip which falls off the digi-pack, the cardboard sleeves make it hard to remove the discs... yikes this thing is a chore razz

Yes but you can hold it in your hands! Isn't that what all the physical media guys want? wink

I don't think anyone who knows Horner's music so well can hear second 42 in that video and not conclude that part has DNA of Horner's own spiderman music.

I wish they'd have just copied the MOS steelbook packaging, but all well. I keep most of my collection in a storage bin under my bed, so no big deal. It's a shame the team that approves packaging like this really doesn't have a clue what collectors would prefer...

Regarding those two extra tracks on disc 2 - Cold War, and No Place Like Home - where should they be placed in the 1st discs order? Any guesses from those who've seen the film? I'll just place the Suites at the end, delete the songs of course smile

They play right after "I'm Spider-Man", but you can't really place every cue in film order because of crossfades.
For me, best option was to place "Cold War / No Place Like Home" between "So Much Anger" and "I'm Moving to England".

Thanks Machionic, I'll do the same. As a big Zimmer fan I have to say this is a really mixed bag. I don't think it's quite worth $18 (I used Amazon credit). The songs are garbage of course, but it's the 5min of film score that pushed me to get the deluxe edition... if it were just the extended suites, I'd say it's an easy decision to just get the standard release.

Ummm...well aside from the film, which was marginally better than the last one but not a patch on Raimi's....the score didn't impressed me much. Though maybe I liked it slightly better than Man Of Steel. The rip-off main theme [makes a change from ripping off Morricone I guess?] was quite good, overall the score was quite diverse, and I think would make a reasonable listen on CD [though I doubt I'll get it] but heard with the film, it sometimes felt at odds with what was happening on screen and sometimes felt just randomly plastered over scenes

Of course most of us haven't seen the film yet, but after having edited the deluxe OST into chronological order, I am enjoying the score much more now. It definitely has a better flow to it as heard in the correct order.

I'm absolutely in awe of that score

Having seen TASM 2, the score definitely works fine in the movie and Zimmer's Spider-Man theme even pops up regularly in my head (whereas Horner's music regularly bugged me in the first movie and I never could recollect his main theme - OK though it may be).

I even start enjoying the album of TASM 2, while it couldn't hold my interest prior to attending the movie (which itself is again a very enjoyable effort with great performances).

It is a shockingly conceived album (deluxe edition), with one snippet of an idea seguing randomly into another snippet and another, while longer cues feel out of place, and some genuinely thrilling/thematic setpieces are completely missing. Presumably they were composed by somebody else...?

Does anyone know the lyrics of the awesome "Electro" theme? I can't quite make it out.

Saw the film last night. It was a lot better than I thought it would be based on the trailers, but had some weird tonal shifts. There was more of the wonderful emotional interplay between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, and Garfield and Sally Field, from the last film. Some genuinely emotional moments. But then there are horribly campy performances from Jamie Foxx (terrible as a nerdy loner), Paul Giamatti and particularly Marton Csokas (who seems to be channelling Vincent Schiavelli’s turn from TOMORROW NEVER DIES), which completely jar against the more naturalistic styles of Garfield, Stone and Field, and feel more like something more suitable for a Joel Schumacher Batman film. It also has what I feel to be one of the worst scores I have heard in a long time. Zimmer’s main Spider-Man theme is basically Fanfare For The Common Spider-Man, and sounds like a parody (it’s like a cross between the Copland piece and Zimmer’s Going For Gold theme), and the action music just came across as obnoxious noise. I didn't feel the "whisper-rapping" to characterise Electro, worked at all either. The score is the very antithesis of Horner’s finely crafted, dramatically astute, and emotionally rich score for the previous film. He is sorely, sorely missed.

I'm sure I'll be branded a Zimmer-hater for that assessment, but I'm really not. From his recent work, I love his Batman and Robert Langdon scores, and I think INCEPTION was genius, but on the other hand I only liked the emotional stuff in MAN OF STEEL and didn't take to the action music at all. In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 even the emotional material was pretty by-the-numbers, and barely made an impression on me, unlike the other elements I have mentioned which sadly made a negative impression. Perhaps he had too many collaborators on this one. Too many cooks, etc.

Despite all this, I did enjoy the film a lot. A mixed bag, but the good stuff was very good indeed.
