Yeah, it's mercifully short and sporadically entertaining, but it takes the 'leave your brain at the door' factor to lunatic levels. And yeah, the score is great, but shoulda read 'Music scored by Henry Jackman from original PREDATOR (and BACK TO THE FUTURE) themes by Alan Silvestri
I wonder if the silly tone of the film was dictated by recent successes like Sharknado, Piranha, and the Meg.
From the reviews I've seen and read, it doesn't really seem to be strictly the tone and choppy narrative that essentially damages the film.... it's primarily the main characters complete lack of any fear nor seriousness of what's happening around them and ya know.... PREDATORS!
If you went back to even the original and changed nothing but the characters not showing fear towards the predator and just continuing to make jokes? That film would have likely been perceived as terrible too, regardless of the other great things in it.
It always blows my mind that certain writers/directors/producers in Hollywood just love to prance around praising themselves as "professionals" yet they fail at basic "film school" storytelling, like in this film. I've heard people saying even Deadpool knew when to take itself seriously when talking about this.
Wow, I like what I hear! It sounds more like Debney's PREDATORS than I expected, especially the brassy parts. No worries of an Alien vs Predator repeat here
Yep. I just watched the film. Someone needs to cut Silvestri a check, his themes are all over the film.
Will definitely get the score. Debney used Silvestri well and added some nice touches of his own in his score, be interested to hear this.
Didn't they refilm about 85% of this film? Tom Jane doesn't die early and it's all less comedic (though it sounds still too comedic). Then they restructured it again and filmed even more reshoots. No wonder it's apparently a mess.
They reshot the living hell out of the film. It's a shame too, because I really enjoyed alot of the set up. I ADORE Shane Black and hope that one day we get to see the film he and Fred intended on making.
Wait we're still discussing our surprise that this is a Shane Black movie? This is Shane Black Remakes Predator With Major Interference From the Studio. Unless this was purely an ego project (an I'm gonna make this even though my script is crap movie, which isn't generally what Black is about) I'd be willing to bet that a) people aren't expecting a Shane Black movie, and b) neither was the studio, so they ruined it.
It felt like they were trying to get that Joss Whedon/Avengers banter fizzing between the main characters, firing off zingers at every turn, but for every one that landed, the same number crashed and burned...at the expense of the story and drama. That whole 'why are they CALLED Predators, when they're xxx' joke got old pretty quick, like lots of other quip-age in the film. Thinketh Me

sounds like a Shane Black movie/script to me (LONG KISS GODNIGHT, KISS KISS, NICE GUYS, LAST BOY SCOUT...)

That kind of dialog was 100% Shane Black. I wonder if Kev has seen a Shane Black movie before.
Yeah, I've seen EVERY Shane Black movie. Some I've enjoyed...others, not so much. I find him quite hit and miss anyway and this one obviously misses the mark way more than it hits. I often liken him to Whedon, as they both started out writing, polishing and ghosting scripts as well as touting their own stuff back when. Whedon seems to have been the greater success of the two.
IMHO, the movie a bit of a mess, but it's still very entertaining for the most part.
The Score owns much to Mr. Silvestri, she should have got a front card IMHO.

This is exactly it. It's sad really, thought this was as close to a homerun as we could get.
And yes again to Alan Silvestri getting on screen credit. The score for 2018 feels like it's at least 25% of 1987's score. And not even really to a benefit. It just kept reminding me I was watching a movie not even in the ballpark of the original.

Did Silvestri opt for more $$ instead of onscreen credit?
