While my reaction to Williams' music is completely different (his music touches me like few others'), sometimes, RM, that's all you can say. It leaves you cold. No further explanation necessary. I'm sure there are several on this board who will gladly take that hour of fatigue and boredom off your hands. I, too, have been deeply touched by Mr. Williams' music, right from the beginning with Tuesday's Theme from Bachelor Flat. His harmonic language just spoke to me instantly. I enjoyed his other 60s scores, but I really fell in love with his music with The Reivers. After that, he could do little wrong, although some of his more outre scores didn't "get" to me, like Images. But if he had written nothing but The Accidental Tourist, which I found incredibly perfect for the film and just as a listening experience, then he'd be in my pantheon. But there's so much more than that. I haven't loved all of his output in the last decade - I thought A.I. was the last true masterpiece from him (I'm sure others will differ), but his themes resonate with me in a very strong way (ET, for example), and when that happens, for me, he's the equal of anyone anywhere and that includes Rozsa, Herrmann, Newman, Friedhofer, Goldsmith, and my other favorites - although I find those kinds of popularity contests off-putting and not productive at all.

Any chance of The Reivers getting a reissue/expansion? It would be a dream project, but I believe others have tried and failed.

I thought A.I. was the last true masterpiece from [Williams] I read this just now, having just watched the film tonight on Blu-Ray. Boy, that's a magnificent score. The early "hide and seek" sequence has the perfect musical depiction: the music is both buoyant and unsettling, with its charming but off-kilter melody and quirky rhythms. And the final piece is absolutely haunting, a gorgeous melody performed in a somehow hollow manner. I don't know if the piano has been treated in some way, or miked oddly, or it's just a performance technique, but the strange distance of the piano, combined with the lilting melody, is a masterful stroke.

. . . a gorgeous melody performed in a somehow hollow manner. For a second, I thought you were going to mention Josh Groban, who has a talent for making any gorgeous melody sound somehow hollow.

Have these all shipped? I live in LA County so I normally get quickly. Haven't received yet. Yes, I stated above - all shipped last Tuesday - there is simply no predicting the USPS - I have a close friend who mailed some bills, time sensitive bills from Santa Monica to LA - none arrived at their destinations. We can track your package if you drop me an e-mail.

My dynamic Williams duo arrived this afternoon. And the jewel case for Butch & Sundance was broken. So, quite obviously, since they arrived in the same package, I have to rate both Missouri Breaks and Butch & Sundance releases as ZERO STARS. And start a WHOLE NEW THREAD about how HORRIFYING this is and how HORRIBLE Kritzerland is because they did not anticipate this comment and proactively mail me a replacement and/or send armed guards along with the package when they mailed it. Meanwhile, back to reality. I'm playing the first disc of Missouri Breaks and finding it utterly delightful. I had never heard the old LP (or seen the movie) and, so far, I just love it. Looking forward to hearing how the LP program differs. And then I still have this Butch & Sundance to discover. What a great day! Thank you, Bruce.

This arrived today and am listening to it now. This is a different John Williams to what I'm used to from him and I have to say I like it. Enjoying it a lot. Well, mine arrived yesterday and I have listened to it twice. I own the LP and never purchased the Varese until I was able to pick it up at Family Dollar for $4. I have to say at this time I like the original LP presentation. Some of you are talking about the "rawness", that is what I do not like. I like most everything Williams composes, but this is bottom of the stack for me. I had to try it to see what new was left off the rerecording, but I believe I will hold on to this for trade/sale. Thor has it right in some cases, not every score needs a complete release, this one just seems to go on and on. I also never really cared for THE REIVERS.
