Previously released Neal Hefti...How To Murder Your Wife...

The previous release was not released by us.

Hmm, could it be "Oh Dad, Poor Dad..."?

Well, that is a delightfully delightful score and would be a wonderful pairing, especially if it was right off the four-track masters.

How about Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood for the premiere?

Well, that would be very exciting - one of his best scores and his final score.

...those original tracks are absolutely vibrant !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSwd1gBden4

Imagine them in beautiful stereo newly remixed from the original multi tracks. It's not only the vibrant cues with this score - there are some stunningly beautiful cues to boot - it's kind of a perfect score and right up there with the best of Mancini and I think both Mancini and Hefti transcend the dreaded "comedy" curse - then again, I know very few people who think of Won Ton Ton as a comedy smile

There are over sixty guest stars in the film - that alone makes it fun viewing.

Won Ton Ton The Dog That Saved Hollywood the film that killed Michael Winner's career in Hollywood.

I'm in. I buy anything Hefti, but Won Ton Ton is definitely one of his more noteworthy scores and to get Poor Dad in optimal quality is a major bonus.

I appreciate the Kritzerland label doing everything it can for this composer's output. Hopefully Intrada can be bothered at some point to get us a CD of the Barefoot in the Park album since it's UMG territory, as well as P.J. since that's Universal. If I could help get you guys access to UMG and the major film studios currently not working with you, I gladly would for my own benefit.

Won Ton Ton The Dog That Saved Hollywood the film that killed Michael Winner's career in Hollywood.

Well, Michael Winner, much as I like him as a director, was the worst possible choice for the film. It's astonishing to watch his work on this - he literally never has the camera in the right place for a gag - it almost seems willful. It could have been a much funnier film, but not with Winner and Bruce Dern - they are, the two of them, about as funny as a hernia. Madeline Kahn is great, the dog is great, the guest stars are fun, but the tone is never ever right.

Ok, how in the hell did I miss this announcement!?!?! Yes, I've been somewhat living under a rock.

And it's up to $90 on ebay. Grrrrr!

Truly a case of "you snooze, you lose." frown

First off, I just did a search on eBay and there are no copies at all at any price. Drop me an e-mail - we'll have emergency copies left in a few days or try Peter Kelly at movie music.

Curious: what about Duning's rejected "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's gone and Named This Film With a Long Name and Now She's Hiding in the Closet"?

More Hefti is always great news!

Just being curious: since "Dad" was originally a RCA LP - does this make the reamining Paramount/Fox Mancinis possible?

Thanks! E-mail sent.

The eBay listing must have ended. It's back now... and now it's $10 more than the first listing.

I just did a search for completed items, and that same seller has sold four copies in the past four days, raising the price each time: $45, $55, $65 and $79.99.

Thanks for IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. I really liked the Telarc re-recording when it came out. I thought they did a fine job, and was happy they went through the trouble of recording the score the way Tiomkin wrote it.

I really thought we'd never see the real tracks, and what is most delightful to me about the Kritzerland CD is that with Tiomkin on the podium, the recording sounds exponentially more "Tiomkin." There's a wonderful, period sound to the playing and recording that truly evokes the feel of the film. I'm really enjoying this CD.

Everybody, do yourself a favor. Put in the CD, and set up track 21 on pause, so it's ready to play the instant you hit the button. Then pop in the DVD and find the end of the film where Ward Bond finds Stewart on the bridge. Right after Bond says "What in the Sam hill are you yelling for, George?", start the CD. Then the fun begins. Just watch the way Tiomkin catches many of the cuts and scene changes. It's just great.

About track 23, my ear says it's not a female vocalist, but a male tenor (in the style of singers like Morton Downey, Sr.)

Quick quiz... in the actual movie, right after the Liberty Films logo, what is the first piece of music you hear, and who wrote it? Scroll down for answer.

It's one of the sleigh ride scenes from THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, by Bernard Herrmann.

Unless the dealer is fibbing about where he lives (Somerset, New Jersey), he didn't order from us. We did have a few multiples, but most of those, other than people occasionally ordering two or three, are from overseas folks. But a search of Somerset yielded nothing so he must be getting them from SAE or Movie Music, the only two dealers who really ordered what they needed to on this title. Again, I will have emergency copies and am happy to let them go for the regular price.

Bruce, I've been enjoying the Tiomkin cd very much. A new Tiomkin is always welcomed, thanks, and please keep the golden age cds coming. smile

I saw Won Ton Ton when it came out, unlike many others (it seems) I always liked the film very much. It's great searching for all the golden age stars. Just about 6 months ago I bought the dvd.
I'm looking forward to the delightful Hefti score. smile

I either missed the original announcement from Kritzerland or just didn't pay enough attention to it when the CD was announced. The eBay seller above IS from New Jersey since I was the first one buying from him at $45. He was originally allowing bidding along with a Buy It Now price. I bought it now at the $45 price. Received it in the mail Saturday, the 5th. Shipped it fast and packaged it well. I am glad I bought it when I did. I wish I got it for $19.95. But, I snoozed, I guess.

Still listening to IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. The sequencing is so nice that I totally missed a few other un-chronological cues. Here's the film order as best as I can make out at this time:

1.) Main Title / Heaven
2.) Ski Run
3.) Death Telegram (not in film)
4.) Gower's Deliverance (not in film)
5.) George and Dad (not in film)
6.) Father's Death
10.) Dilemma
7.) Love Sequence (not in film)
24.) a.) Wedding March
11.) Bank Crisis
8.) Wedding Cigars (not in film)
9.) George Lassoes Stork
14.) Dankgebet (? not in film) / This is the Army, Mr. Jones (partially in film)
15.) Uncle Billy's Blunder (partially in film)
12.) Search for Money (not in film)
13.) Potter's Threat (not in film)
16.) Clarence's Arrival (partially in film - mostly replaced)
17.) George is Unborn
24.) b.) Big Band (not sure)
18.) Haunted House (partially in film - mostly replaced with GHOST SHIP by Roy Webb)
Wrong Ma Bailey (this is MIA from the acetates, but was re-recorded for the Telarc suite)
19.) Pottersville Cemetery
20.) Wrong Mary Hatch / The Prayer
21.) A Wonderful Life (original finale) (not in film - replaced with "Hallelujah" from THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME by Alfred Newman)
22.) Auld Lang Syne / End Title

As has been mentioned, the film version of the Main Title has been extended with a brief piece of "Snow Music" by Bernard Herrmann written for THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS.

It is interesting that although not an RKO production, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE utilized music tracks from that company's music library.

There are a couple of tracks that defy chronological re-ordering: "Dankgebet" leads into the wartime montage, but I have no idea what that title refers to - and "Big Band" seems to be intended for some part of the Pottersville sequence which utilizes different fragments of diverse, noisy music to sell the degradation of the small town under the influence of Henry F. Potter.

It must be said that the presentation gains little from chronological restructuring so the Kritzerland CD cannot be faulted for changing a few things around - the CD is better for it.

Thank you very much for providing that valuable and essential breakdown and at least it saves me the job of trying to do the same! It's the sort of thing which should of course be documented in the CD booklet But I suppose none of us are going to change BK's oft-stated position that he doesn't personally want such information and that "it's all about the music" smile
