As it happens, classical erotica has a long and accepted history in most cultures whose legacy extends further than the paltry less than 300 years of (in The Vidalian's timeless phrase) these United States of Amnesia.

So the more contemporary smut-zones that proliferate with such perverse empty pornographic anarchy all over isn't what we're inquiring about ... tho it could also be applied to the definitive difference between being Sensual and the usual nitwit nubiles' and their iron-pyrite 'sexiness'.

Especially where mo'om pitchers are concerned, one rarely encounters any genuinely mature representation of the subject under current scope (altho, when one does it's incredibly memorable more for what's NOT shown or stated but subtly inferred and presented).

How would you definitively define it - especially FSM's more European essences.

Hailing frequencies open (and don't forget to remember 2 keep it PeeGee, pallies wink ) ...

In my experience Erotica is subtle use of a feather. Pornography is the whole damn chicken.

I would say erotica is the "art" of sexuality. More suggestive, less shown, which draws on the power of the imagination. That doesn't mean pornography can't be "erotic" but it rarely is.

Erotica is about naked women.

Any image of a naked man is labeled porn.

(Fascinating, a book, "The Nude," by eminent art historian Kenneth Clark, had dozens of illustrations, but only 2 of male nudes, Michelangelo's "David," and the "Hermes" by Praxitiles. It's like men don't exist. Very odd viewpoint. And, I think, more about power. But that, as they say, is material for another discussion...)

Funny - but I do worry about the words "In my experience"...

I think different people will feel the line is crossed at different points.

I started a thread here on the recent French film "Blue is the Warmest Color."

http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=99998&forumID=7&archive=0

It contains a 7-minute sex scene that I would classify as "somewhat graphic." Some folks, including the writer of the graphic novel on which the film is based, think it crosses the line into pornography. For me, it wasn't pornographic and not even fully erotic: I felt it had much more to do with the sense of release and relief experienced by the main character in finally finding herself.

I will also add that some would say that pornography has no value beyond the sexual element, whereas eroticism has other elements, to me at least.

I preface this with saying that I would expect most folks here to see my point of view as quite simplistic and naive. I'm okay with that, and it's very similar to what others have said here.

I think Erotica (much like the concept of Romance itself) is best exemplified by what you can't see. That it conveys its message through subtlety and concealment and not being self-compelled to reveal every last detail. Through that method it creates a mystique, a natural curiosity to see and learn more and more. It is our own imaginations, attempting to fill in the blanks (so to speak), which then entice and intoxicate us.

I think Pornography is that which is excessive, unsubtle and gratuitous... showing all and leaving nothing to the imagination. (And I feel this actually pertains more to violence inflicted on the human body rather than human bodies engaging sexually.)

So far, I agree with everything that's been said here, even the chicken comment.
And jackfu, I was drinking coffee when Tall Guy showed up. big grin

Erotica is the fantasy, pornography is the reality and as we know in life and in genre films what you don't see is more potent then what you do see.Erotica can have a much more lasting value while porno can fall flat pretty fast.

So if it's in the form of highly charged descriptive words written in a novel - that is E. If it's visualised, P?

Or, if it's suggestive of pre-carnal activity whether in writing or in pictorial form, that's E. If there's absolutely no doubt in one's mind then it's got to be P.

E comes before P but P is coming after E. The bottom dollar.

Edit: This reminds me of Clockwork Orange. There's scope for music to be introduced into the equation too, if that's anything to go by.

What truly distinguishes the two is the social morays of the time and place in which you live. As a general rule Americans are amongst the most notorious prudish people compared to most other industrialized nations.

And what is considered horrific in the conservative south would possibly be perfectly acceptable in more liberal parts of the country.

But it is even more complicated than that as, often, two people sitting right next to each other will fall on one side of the debate or the other. Pornography, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Erotica is simulated sex, porn is actual sex taking place.

One you've seen the latter you can never go back.

To some, this might be construed as erotica because it's art that may tickle your fancy.

As for pornography. Why, let's just not go there smile

PLEASE knot ... especially since some carbon-units Clearly can't distinguish in the simplistically-insulting extremis the seminal difference between the two.
