My 5 favourite films of 1961 not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
    Mann's EL CID are :

THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE
    ONE-EYED JACKS
    PLACIDO
    TU NE TUERAS POINT
    WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND

(From 1949 to 1962 any Ozu's movie, with the exception of the unseen MUNEKATA KYÔDAI, would make my 5-titles lists. Because they are all like exquisite variations to each others, with the exception of OHAYÔ, I consider them as a one-and-single outstanding piece of achievement.)

I saw MARIENBAD once long ago, Tone, and, while I found it interesting, I can't say that I really enjoyed it. If I were to look at it again now perhaps my response would be different. If I do, you'll be one of the first to know.

This is probably my most anticipated want-to-see film for this year.

Now that I've seen it, I have to say that I much prefer Resnais' earlier Hiroshima, mon amour. Marienbad is visually stunning, but it lacks the humanity and innovative storytelling techniques of Hiroshima.
