I wonder if these Man City players who's been findng the net so often this season would be completely shut out by aggressive defensive tactics in the World Cup Soccer Finals in Brazil.

The countdown might be a tad early, the tournament starts in 147 days.

I got a bit worried yesterday when I went to the 'old' thread and seen half the posts had disappeared!! So worried in fact, that I emailed David. Glad to see they are all back now, and not lost to the agessmile

Shouldn't this new thread be titled 'The Football Thread - 2nd Half?'wink

United's winning of the Who Dares Wins Award was done so in a sarcastic manner, though they really did deserve the award after their recent tribulations. The Hammers won it earlier this season, when they pounded Tottenham 3-0, remember? I dole that (un)prestigious prize out fairly, my dear Bill Carson!

As for the Balon D'Or...Ronaldo cried copious tears when he won it but can you picture the boohoohooing the poor lad would have done had he lost??? I still can't believe Michael Owen once won the damned thing! Did he injury himself lifting the trophy? lol

Luis Suárez has won it before, of course*. But it's a bit like the Oscars - there are players who deserved to win it but never did. Billy Bremner for one.

TG

* The Spanish one, in 1960!

Kenny Dalglish never won it either (!), although the Ballon d'or that is now is different to the original award that started in the 50s and 60s. I was surprised at Platini's comments that Ribery deserved it this year more than Ronaldo which is just nonsense, as it's an individual award, not for who was the best player in the best team. Platini was a great player, one of my all time favourites, but as President of UEFA he's a gobshite!

Couldn't agree more with your post, Thomas, other than I prefer Kelly to Kenny!

Thank you kindly, Bill. smile

The BBC mentioned that Tottenham FC Tweeted their respects regarding Spurs supporter the late, great Roger Lloyd Pack:

Tottenham Hotspur ?@SpursOfficial Jan 16
"We're saddened to learn of the death of Spurs fan Roger Lloyd-Pack. The Club extends our condolences to his friends and family."

So, the second half of the season is upon us and in the Prem, from 10th place down, anyone could be in a relegation scrap in the coming months.
Up top, two packs of 3 are starting to evolve. Arsenal, City and Chelsea are showing consistency and squad strength for the first 3 places, while Liverpool, Everton and Spurs are all in a battle for the coveted 4th spot. I think United will have to wave bye-bye to Champions League football next season (unless they win it in May!!).
In't Championship, TG's Leeds continue to wobble, but a few wins on the bounce could change that.

Sunderland scored Juan goal, Man Utd scored two but it doesn't Matawink

Mata to Mancs for 37m big ones?!! Good player, but not that good. Way overpriced. Looks like a panic buy to me, I'm not even sure where he will play in that team. Looks a case of, "Let's go out and buy the best player available and pay premium price for him".

Sunderland gets the Who Dares Wins Award for sure, boyos, but it's hardly worth it seeing as United are such a crap side these days.

Too bad the forum has gone kablooey as well, as it undercuts my enthusiasm for posting the weekly recaps that I'm "sure" you all enjoy so much. So instead of that, I'm just listening to Trevor Jones scores. smile

I guess United got Mata to fill in for RVP, as both are corner kick specialists, right?

It's probably goiing to be a Manchester City treble this year: the Capital One Cup, the Premiership*, and the UEFA.

* wink
