Always a good strategy. Never use your own money.

Judd Hirsch will play a taxi driver.....

I think he's getting typecast.

It better not be just "might." How many movies will she have to be part of a team or a support act in before it happens?

I hope the Black Widow movie happens, I really do.

Yeah we are getting those last Clone Wars episodes. I really want resolution to Ahsoka's story line.

Knight rider movie? Really? Oh my.

I'm all for a Black Widow movie...we need a female-driven superhero movie that isn't a festering pile of shit. But don't make it an "event" movie...make it a spy thriller with cool SHIELD gadgets, like James Bond movies used to be. Scarlett Johansson has been on an acting hot streak lately (Don Jon, Her, and I've heard great things about Under The Skin), and she could easily carry her own film without having to rely solely on her sex appeal. I mean, fucking Ant Man is getting his own movie, and we STILL don't have a female-driven superhero movie worth a damn?

Yeah the only two that come to mind are Elektra and Catwoman and both were poor.

Supergirl, Barb Wire...sadly, most female-driven superhero movies believe that T&A is the only thing an audience of horny teenagers wants to see. I mean, we're finally getting Wonder Woman on the big screen...as a third-billed supporting character in the Man Of Steel sequel. That's just wrong. Why can't we have some lady heroes who are beautiful and competent?

Clean forgot Supergirl, and never seen Barb Wire (didn't realise it was a comic property) but I agree with you whole heartedly that we really do need a strong female LEAD, and not a bit part like WW is seemingly getting in MOS 2.

I don't think there's a market for female based superhero movies. Women have no interest, and it's not testosterone enough for the guys. Lets face it, women are drawn to Tony Stark and Thor not Black Widow.

Everest

I've got Chris Bonnington's book, Everest The Hard Way, about the first ascent of the difficult south west face. I have a duplicate frontispiece signed by Bonnington. The images of the climbers are about the closest thing to imagined sights of human beings standing on other planets you can ever conjure up. This one of Dougal Haston on Everest is my favourite -

Detail

AS7-07-1748 (15 Oct. 1968) --- The world's dozen peaks which reach a height of greater than five miles above sea level are seen in this photograph from the Apollo 7 spacecraft at an altitude of approximately 130 nautical miles. The 29,028 ft. high Mount Everest is at lower center. On the central horizon can be seen the 28,250 ft. high Mount Godwin-Austen (K-2) some 800 miles northwest of Mount Everest. In the lower right, Mount Kanchenjunga rises 28,208 ft. to separate Nepal from Sikkim. The snow line on the peaks was at 17,500 ft. In the upper right the lake-studded highlands of Tibet are visible.

I think James Cameron would have something to say about that. Then again, I doubt this is The Terminator.

Oh, dear.

I'm guessing you don't spend a lot of time on The Mary Sue.

Alright you got me to Google Mary Sue. LOL. But I still think I'm correct. Girls want to see hunky guys. Guys want to see hunky guys. (I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that- Seinfeld joke )
Guys DO want to see T&A. So that's the kind of female comic book heroes we are going to get. But they are going to remain in the "B" movie category because of limited box office appeal.

I think that's backwards. The problem is not that guys only want T&A and thus all we're going to get is crappy T&A movies. The problem with the box office of the female superhero movies to date is not that people stayed away from female superheroes, but that people stayed away from crappy movies. Nothing wrong with Sigourney Weaver's looks, but I don't think anyone was flocking to Aliens for the T&A -- or for the hunky guys, for that matter! Yes, people like eye candy, but that's not the only reason they see movies. Give 'em a good Black Widow movie -- and I mean a real movie, not a movie whose selling point is "Look boys, it's a hot superhero!" -- and I bet it'd do fine.

Try reading some of the articles there from over the past couple years - I mean not just the short while between my earlier post and yours, but enough time to really let it sink in, with all the recurring patterns in their coverage, the things that frustrate and elate the writing staff, etc. (seriously, you could easily spend hours just on their coverage of boneheaded DC decisions from the last year). And when you're done, you might try looking up "fake geek girl" and all the responses to that. Better yet, try going to a comics shop sometime and just hanging out for a while, and see how many female customers it actually has (this will vary with the location, of course, but still). Or check out the attendees at a sci-fi / comics convention. I unconditionally guarantee you there are plenty of lady geeks and nerds out there. You might not know it if your information on them comes from, say, The Big Bang Theory (for example), but it's true, and by and large they're sick of people assuming they don't exist.

There's an audience that's just about starving for a (good) superhero movie centered around a female protagonist, and studio executives who think the way you seem to are the main reason why, unfortunately.

I know there are plenty of female comic book/sci fi fans. But that doesn't mean that translates to box office success. Regarding the other comment above, Alien was still basically a "guys" movie. It was not a female empowerment movie for girls to geek over.

That's exactly my point: I'm not asking for a female empowerment movie. I'm not saying there's wide demand for a female empowerment movie. But a movie about a female superhero doesn't have to be about female empowerment. That's the whole point. Make a kick-ass superhero flick and the audiences will be there regardless of the sex of the lead.

I suspect my own interest in the superhero/superheroine arena plunged into the ether nether regions following Hancock. That kinda said it all. Or, rather, it didn't.

But just making a male superhero movie doesn't automatically mean box office success, either. However, for some reason there seldom seems to be much trouble getting one made anyway. But female supers? Studios are deathly afraid of them, and it's terribly frustrating to a lot of people.

Alien may not have been made as a female empowerment movie, but did wind up being very important to a lot of women.
