I actually found a definition of Popcorn Flicks on the Internet. “Mindless fun that has one special thing like special effects, action, etc. Nothing else.” I do NOT agree with that definition. For me, a popcorn flick is a movie where I am, for two to three hours, thoroughly entertained. I just plain have fun in these movies. In my definition there is a combination of drama and comedy. At times I’m laughing out loud and at times I’m very tense. I don’t have to think too deeply, but I’m always engaged in the movie.

Some of my personal favorites are: Die Hard (the first one), Speed, Jaws, True Lies, Superman, Jaws, Pirates of the Caribbean( the first one where less is more), and The Avengers
.
My all-time favorite is JURASSIC PARK. Seeing that the first time was a glorious experience.

And as I peruse my above list, I see that popcorn flicks have had some amazing music scores composed for them.

So what are some of your favorite popcorn flicks? (Let’s hope we get more in the future.)

The list that comes up on that link is odd to me for a list of 25 top "Popcorn Flicks". No "Indiana Jones"? No "Star Wars"? No "Batman" (of any kind)? Strange....

You love Jaws so much you listed it twice! smile

Revenge of the Ninja is one of mine. Temple of Doom is way up there, too.

I tend not to watch many 'robot, monster, superhero' films as I generally don't like them, so that rules out many a possible 'popcorn' favourite for me. I recently watched 'Pacific Rim' on Sky Movies with my daughter and along with 'Cloverfield' is one of the worst films I ever saw. I can't stand 'Star Wars' or 'Star Trek' either.

However, there are some I do enjoy. Like E.T, the Back To The Future Films, Indiana Jones, and the first 'LOTR' film. Couldn't stand the other two. The only superhero films I've found decent are 'Superman (1978)' and Burton's 'Batman'. I also like a lot of Burton's other films, 'Sleepy Hollow', 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Ed Wood', 'Big Fish' if you want to to call them 'popcorn'.

That URL I posted does leave out some great Popcorn Flicks.

Jaws two times was an error. Duh.

Thinking back, I should have added E.T. and Romancing The Stone to my own list.

Most of my favourite Popcorn Flicks have, over time, become my Greatest Films Ever Made!!!
Things like JAWS, STAR WARS, SUPERMAN, CE3K and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK started out as popcorn, but now taste like caviar!! wink

Personally I find it a big derogatory calling anything a popcorn flick. All movies need to be concentrated on to some extent to find out if we feel it has value or not. I mean let's be honest calling something a popcorn flick is not a real compliment.

For me a popcorn flick is an otherwise cheesy or poorly made film that is entertaining if I turn my brain off. An example for me would be all the old Godzilla movies. Or Ray Harryhausen films. I Love 2012 for some reason. (The only Roland Emmerich film I like) Or drive in classics like The Cheerleaders. wink

Star Wars, Jaws, Die Hard, ET, are not popcorn movies by my definition, because they are well made, though obviously have no great cinematic message other than to entertain.

Well I think E T.has an important message. One can have love for something no matter how alien it might seen to us. UNIVERSAL LOVE. But to each one's own.

“I remember another gentle visitor from the heavens, he came in peace and then died, only to come back to life, and his name was E.T., the extra terrestrial. I loved that little guy.”

Question- Was the song HEARTLIGHT by NEIL DIAMOND, based on that movie or was it something that was separate and people or the media started to connect it with the film?

I remember Neil Diamond being quoted as saying it was inspired by the movie, but I don't think I've ever heard anything directly from Bacharach or Bayer Sager regarding it. Although I've always thought the lyrics do suggest it.

You are probably right, Montana Dave. big grin I just want my popcorn with lots of butter and lightly salted.

I'm adding Back To The Future as one of my favorite popcorn flicks, and I'm hoping more entertaining films will pop up in the future.

Back To The Future was an entertaining, fun popcorn flick. It made me laugh. The music is very good and pretty well-known.

I often wonder if the comedy genre is really the best for popcorn movies. Their light not to deep, nothing to disturb your stomach unless you get into a laughing fit where you may start to choke on your popcorn. I know one thing, watching TV sitcoms I am always eating something.

For me, EVERY movie is a "popcorn movie," because I ALWAYS buy popcorn before entering the theatre. They are inseparable for me. Traditional in my family…old habits are hard to break. However, I realize that certain subject matter would NEVER qualify for the definition of a "popcorn" movie. For example, the film "HOPE SPRINGS" was sold to the public as a comedy. I always love a good comedy, and so my girlfriend & I saw it together. I think we BOTH stopped munching on the popcorn about ten minutes into the film, when we realized that this was NO comedy. As the final credits rolled, she said, "That has to be the saddest film I've ever seen." Then she looked at me and saw my tear-drenched face. All of our popcorn went into the trash.

So, HERE are a few of my favorite "Popcorn Movies." Y'all have already named many of my favorites, but since My Dearest Joan is looking for more titles, here are mine:

ARMAGEDDON
HUGO
WHAT'S UP, DOC?
PAPER MOON
THE CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION
SCOOP
THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
SLEEPER
LOVE AND DEATH
THE PRODUCERS
THE TWELVE CHAIRS
BLAZING SADDLES
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
ALIENS
THE ABYSS
TITANIC
AVATAR

I could go on…but I don't want to HOG anybody else's list.
