With the passing of Lauren Bacall, YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN (1950) is no longer the oldest film whose major stars are alive. The other two stars are Kirk Douglas and Doris Day.

I have been wondering which film would take its place. After some searching, the oldest one I have found is BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967). Starring Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons and Michael J. Pollard. All are still with us.

Can anyone find an older one?

Well, I'm wondering how many of them in a single picture have to be alive...2 or 5 like you've chosen but your choice is excellent with 5 still being with us. I'll have to think about this one. 1967...that's impressive!

Okay, I can get the first 2 listed and then two possibly 3 more from the supporting cast (but the others are sadly gone) from a 1962 released film, Lonely Are the Brave with Douglas and Rowlands and from the supporting cast Kennedy, Schallert and possibly Kane.

The top three cast members in Rene Clement's 1964 JOY HOUSE (Les félins) are still alive--Alain Delon, Jane Fonda, and Lola Albright.

The top three cast members in 1960's VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET are still alive: Jerry Lewis; Joan Blackman, and Earl Holliman.

There must still be quite a few 60s films where main stars are still with us.

Earl Holliman was also in FORBIDDEN PLANET -- 1956 -- which we watched the other night. Robert Wagner and Joanne Woodward are still with us, and they starred in the 1956 film A KISS BEFORE DYING.

Wow. I had a feeling that 1967 was too recent to take the prize.

The second-billed cast member, Jeffrey Hunter, has passed. Third-billed Virginia Leith is still with us. Joanne Woodward was billed fourth.

It's harder than you might think to find the three top-billed cast members still living. Even if all three were no older than 30 at the time, and the average 1960's film was made in 1965, all three would have to live into their mid-80s. Any of the three who was in their 40s at the time would have to live into their 90s.

Fair point bob. I suppose that even "young" lead actors back then werent usually that young.
And of course im sure youre right - you think of a film starring someone still with us, then realise of the films they were in, their co-stars have passed.
I was trying to think of the early Bond films, for instance, but wiseman, pleasance, frobe, robert shaw, all gone.

Yes, and this is what made YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN so remarkable. Bacall was 89, Douglas is 97 and Day is 90.

I daresay that no earlier film other than BONNIE AND CLYDE will find the five top-billed cast members still alive (at least no film where we can recognize the names of those cast members).

Only thing close I can think of is Lonely Are The Brave (1962). Kirk Douglas and Gena Rowlands. George Kennedy & William Schallert are still with us.

McCabe & Mrs Miller (1971) still has all five top-billed actors among the living.

Doctor Zhivago (1965) still has three top-billed actors among the living.
Young Cassidy (1965) still has three top-billed actors among the living.
The Time Machine (1960) still has three top-billed actors among the living.

As an aside, I just read a Vanity Fair article with Maureen O'Hara. Still kickin' at 96.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is a special case, since the nine actors listed on the poster were presented in alphabetical order. So Geraldine Chaplin, Julie Christie, and Tom Courtenay (all living) are listed first. But who's to say that Courtenay's role was bigger than Omar Sharif's (listed seventh). Also still living is Rita Tushingham. So five of the nine are alive.

Uhm....what about Olivia de Havilland, who starred in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)?

Okay. So this counts as the new bar, then? wink

Olivia de Havilland is pretty much the sole survivor from any of the films she made prior to 1965. We're looking for films with multiple stars still alive.
