Guess makes sense if nobody listens to it enough.
Personally I listen to it daily in car.

They've been talking about it for years in the UK, but they'd be a mountain of useless FM radios (plus all the FM radios in cars), & they're still selling FM radios. I think it'll be a few years yet in the UK. All my radios are DAB, I've got four in the house, but I listen to the radio more than I watch TV.

I don't like the fact that FM will close here in Norway.

Why fix what's not broke?

Really? I didn't know, although they've been talking about it for years. Guess I have to junk my old and trusted Tivoli radio now.

Much the same for me. I can't even remember the last time I listened to FM. The UK managed to switch off the analogue TV signal which must have left a lot of useless sets, so I would imagine they will be watching what happens with this in Norway carefully. Also, I read recently that Norway has much lower average listening hours than the UK.

I say get rid of it here in the U.S., too. DJs *still* talk over the entire instrumental openings of songs (the few they still play, anyway).

I suppose the only reason it still exists is for emergency broadcasting (and of course ad revenue *puke*)

Norway on Wednesday completed its transition to digital radio, becoming the first country in the world to shut down national broadcasts of its FM radio network despite some grumblings.

As scheduled, the country's most northern regions and the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic switched to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in the late morning, said Digitalradio Norge (DRN) which groups Norway's public and commercial radio.

The transition, which began on January 11th, allows for better sound quality, a greater number of channels and more functions, all at a cost eight times lower than FM radio, according to authorities.

The move has however been met with some criticism linked to technical incidents and claims that there is not sufficient DAB coverage across the country.

In addition, radio users have complained about the cost of having to buy new receivers or adapters, usually priced around 100 to 200 euros.

Currently, fewer than half of motorists (49 percent) are able to listen to DAB in their cars, according to DRN figures.

According to a study cited by local media, the share of Norwegians who listen to the radio on a daily basis has dropped by 10 percent in one year, and public broadcaster NRK has lost 21 percent of its audience.

"It's a big change and we have to give listeners time to adapt to digital radio," the head of DRN, Ole Jørgen Torvmark, said in a statement.

"After each shutdown (in a region), we noticed that the audience first dropped but then rose again," he added.

The transition concerns only national radio channels. Most local stations continue to broadcast in FM.

Other countries like Switzerland, Britain and Denmark are due to follow suit in the coming years.

It's the truth. And they're going to do it with the analogue tv signals soon too. So now I not only have to chuck my old Tivoli radio (as previously mentioned), but I can soon no longer use my TV for TV.

The U.S. discontinued analog TV broadcasts in 2009.

I read that some stations are defying the ruling and continuing with their FM broadcasts, though I'm not sure how long that can continue. UK also turned it's analogue TV signal off some years ago, I'm surprised Norway has yet to do it. As I mentioned before, I don't really miss FM (though you can still receive it here) as I changed over to DAB years ago and have enjoyed the variety of options since.

FM radio still going strong in the UK. I'm not aware of any FM stations switching it off.

They've been closing down the analogue TV signals in Norway all year, but as I still get signals just by having my antenna cord straight into the wall socket, there are obviously still some areas missing. But it's just a matter of time now.

I ended my digital TV subscription a couple of years ago due high cost, in favour of an internet-only subscription. That's why I've been doing 'analogue' up untill now, even if my TV is modern and all that. Of course, now even the internet-only subscription is getting up there, price-wise.

Once the analogue goes down in my area, I'm curious to see if I can live without regular TV channels. In other words, just streaming for those that offer it freely etc.

I think DAB Radio is great, now that I have got used to it. So many channels to choose from. And the name of the song in the display...

Down here in New Zealand analog TV ended some years ago but I can't see it happening with AM or FM radio anytime soon. Non of the of the radio networks want to pay for it and apart from a few "must have the latest tech mob" no one want's it..

That's bad news shutting it down a shame, is it a funding problem or over-bright government ideas, occasionally things don't make sense when you lose icon stuff.

Of course when the aliens land in norway, Olaf Connor and the resistence will need some form of ancient communication when they scramble the internet. wink
