There is no doubt that PF paved the way for my interest in instrumental music (with the long solos) and consequently film music. So I owe them a lot.

My favourite album is unquestionably "The Wall". Not only because it was the album that hooked me to their music, but because it's such a damn good piece of music in the first place. One of the highlights in rock history is when Roger Waters' hoarse voice gives way to Gilmour's lofty chorus on "Comfortably Numb".

I have all of their albums, solo albums, singles, DVD's and even a few bootlegs. So I am a completist within reasonable boundaries. I only miss the Syd Barrett 3CD box and a couple of live albums ("Delicate Sound" and "PULSE").

I went to see them on the "Division Bell" tour in 94 (from which "PULSE" was recorded). Great stuff!!

Are you a fan? If so, do you prefer the old psychedelic sound with Barrett or the more progressive, large-scale sound with Waters? I think I'm in the latter camp, although I DO like a lot of the early stuff as well (something about the deceptive naïvité!)

Not really, but Dave Gilmour did discover Kate Bush (q.v.) so I'm eternally grateful for his existence.

And I love that vocalese on one of the albums.

Pete.

I definitely agree with you Thor, "The Wall" is their best album, with "Dark Side of the Moon" coming in at a close 2nd

Late for me so maybe I'll join in again later, but quite simply put DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, WISH YOU WERE HERE, and MEDDLE are the very best IMNSHO and everything else is secondary.

...and KATE BUSH is indeed a great artist, Dave Gilmour knows true talent when he see's/hear's it!

Re: "Meddle"....

"Echoes" is probably the best progressive track ever composed. The way it builds and the cathartic thump it eventually turns into, gives me the goosebumps every time!

Indeed, couldn't have put it better myself!

The official credit is that he orchestrated and conducted.

However, there are those who claim that he actually COMPOSED small pieces of the orchestral music (bridges etc.).

What people may not know is that Pink Floyd actually composed several film scores. There's MORE, ZABRISKIE POINT (that also features a lot of Jerry Garcia) and LA VALLÉE aka OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Roger Waters has also written the scores to WHERE THE WIND BLOWS and THE BODY, while David Gilmour has written the score to an episode of Ruby Wax, of all things.

OBSCURED BY CLOUDS (LP) - 'Burning Bridges', 'The Gold It's In The...', 'Wots...Uh The Deal', 'Mudmen': Man, I love Pink Floyd!

ATOM HEART MOTHER (LP) - Don't really care for the main track. I like the other side better.

MORE (LP) - great "small" stuff on this one. 'Green is the colour'. 'Cymbaline'.

MEDDLE (LP/CD) - I'm probably the only one on this planet who thinks 'Echoes' is one of the "lesser" tracks on this overall good album. The CD sounds very good too.

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (LP/SACD) - A classic with a unbelievable great opener, the effects build up, bang, the groove, the lap steel guitar, it's like stepping into another dimension.

WISH YOU WERE HERE (LP) - The first part is Gilmour at his best and the album should be released on SACD because of him and the magnificent sound of whole recording. Other great tracks: 'Welcome to the Machine' (acousting gtr and synth part!) and 'Wish You Were Here'.

ANIMALS (LP) - Love it from start to finish. Recording-wise, I can't believe how good this album sounds each time I listen to it.

THE WALL (LP/CD) - Loved it like crazy as a teenager. Love it a bit less now. I mostly still like it because Gilmour is my favorite guitarist and songs like 'Comfortably Numb, 'Hey You' are fantastic. But the theatrical/musical feel bothers me sometimes. But damn ...that Gilmour!

THE FINAL CUT (LP) - Again, loved it as a teenager. But now I don't think it's as good as their 70s work. The guitar on the other hand is freaking unbelievable!

I stopped buying Pink Floyd after THE FINAL CUT. I've heard the others without Waters, I don't need them.

Never got into them too much, but I have an official Pearl Jam bootleg that has the band doing a medley of their own song "Daughter" with "Another Brick In the Wall" (the "no dark sarcasm in the classroom" version)

I absolutely love the title track from The Wall and I think the psychadelic dark synth lightshow meltdown from Dark Side of The Moon has to be one of the finest moments in music, EVER.

I cannot believe Britain's most mediocre filmmaker Alan Parker was put in charge of the movie version of The Wall. What a waste- even pre-Hunger era Tony Scott could have done something at least STYLISH out of that... What a waste. frown

I'm also a PINK FLOYD completist. Last night I purchased P•U•L•S•E.

Oh, it's wonderful and so powerful. Possibly the greatest show I've seen on my HT. I must admit that Water's IN THE FLASH is just a shadow of the band, although I love it.

i like a lot of the 'popular' tunes. Never listened to a whole album. had the 2 disc 'greatest hits' but some of the material didn't vibe well with me.

Dark Side of the Moon is probably my favorite album from them but I love some of the songs from wish you were here and the wall.

Yeah, PULSE is a cool set that took forever to be released on DVD! I was actually at this concert myself back in 1994 (not the one on the DVD, but the Oslo version with the same program). I'll never forget it, and it will probably also be the last Pink Floyd concert ever. The Live 8 reunion thing a few years ago was just a one-off event, after all.

The Waters solo concert DVD IN THE FLESH (not FLASH!) is also pretty cool, but as you say, some of the iconic Waters/Gilmour songs somehow don't sound right without both of them. "Comfortably Numb" is a great example. By the way, the same is true for Gilmour's solo concert DVD's.

Happy to know another PF completist! smile

I noticed now.. it's a 5-year-old thread.
Yes, you're right... IN THE FLESH.

Confortably Numb isn't my favourite PF song, however the PULSE presentation of it made me cry. Really touching show... too bad the Waters' version has a lack of musical "tridimensionality".

BTW I was a little shocked when you mentioned yourself as a 'completist'...
wink

He, he...yeah. wink

Of course, there are some restrictions to my PF completism, since there are so many bootlegs and related albums out there that you'd have to be a rich son-of-a-gun to get it all. So I have all their studio albums, live albums, solo albums, 6-7 DVD's and about 8 bootlegs with lots of rare stuff. I also have some related albums, like orchestral versions of their songs....and even two of the techno remix albums! smile
