On a much lighter note...That song reminds me of the legions of lighter-lofting, corduroy pant-wearing, feathered haired, baseball T-Shirt (white w/ black sleeves) post-hippie teens grooving to Journey's sweet melodies with those Columbia records clone album covers. Seemed like every CBS act (Boston, Kansas, et al) had the same ugly spaceship on the cover!
Don't forget the trippy LP covers for Earth, Wind and Fire & ELO.
But as for Journey, for me they were a top 40 band that had a sameness to each hit single, even if they had some dynamite singles. Never really got into them nor understood why they were so popular, ALTHOUGH it did seem they were a smash hit with the girls back then, while the guys, we listened to Springsteen.
But I would not credit Steve Perry with a soulful voice. Boz Scaggs yes. Perry, no.

Sorry, Zel ... those trips down memory lane are sometimes treacherous, ain't they?
Considering we hadn't even heard (or at least consciously recognized) Journey (or "Don't Stop Believin'") until THE SOPRANOS' final ep, it's no wonder that admission got a wide-eyed look from a mischievious maiden who said, with twinkle twinkling, "What did you do, sleep through the '80s?"
With eyes wide open, yeah. Recovering from the 70s, actually.
What's that, Babs? Mem'ries, da da da da da da daaaaa ...

Seeing how I entered high school in 1979 it's weird how I loathe music from the 80's (and after) for the most part, and still love 70's music (and before). Journey always sounded so damned plastic to me.
I may be a heathen, though, because the guy in his 50's who lives in the apartment above mine LOVES 80's music and blasts it all the freakin time!
I take the same position as you, JS. I despise most of the music post-1975 and have never been a Rock and/or Roll type of guy. I much prefer Jazz, so-called "Easy Listening" and oh, yeah, movie and TV scores...all of which has made me oh-so popular with the girls, the jocks, and the hoodlums I went to school with. This continues into my adulthood, too.
Oh, and now that I've been thinking about it, that girl Kristy said that Journey's "best" song was "Wheel In the Sky", so maybe that negates the topic of this thread, as that girl was even a member of the Journey Fan Club...

I LOVE a lot of 80's music, including the particular type of prog-pop that was popular back then - melodic, larger-than-life and produced by brilliant studio musicians (Asia, Yes, Alan Parsons Project and several others). Journey falls SOMEWHAT into this territory, but unfortunately leans too much on the sugar-infested Meatloaf style to be properly my style. But then again, I've only heard a few of their power ballads, like "Separate Ways", "Any Way You Want It" and yes, "Don't Stop Believing". I'm really keen to learn more about them and familiarize myself with their music, because I have a sneaking suspicion that it's actually closer to my preference than I think.
