It’s our choice, anyway.

While

has one of the greatest, most evocative and truly SOULFUL (a consummate cliché eternally over-used and rarely accurate in its application) voices ever unveiled.

To say nothing of the song now getting a new lease on contemporary life by rising up in history as the symbolic anthem accompanying THE SOPRANOS’ final fade to black

*First part of this post was way too depressing, so I've deleted it*

On a much lighter note...That song reminds me of the legions of lighter-lofting, corduroy pant-wearing, feathered haired, baseball T-Shirt (white w/ black sleeves) post-hippie teens grooving to Journey's sweet melodies with those Columbia records clone album covers. Seemed like every CBS act (Boston, Kansas, et al) had the same ugly spaceship on the cover!

Don't forget the trippy LP covers for Earth, Wind and Fire & ELO.

But as for Journey, for me they were a top 40 band that had a sameness to each hit single, even if they had some dynamite singles. Never really got into them nor understood why they were so popular, ALTHOUGH it did seem they were a smash hit with the girls back then, while the guys, we listened to Springsteen.

But I would not credit Steve Perry with a soulful voice. Boz Scaggs yes. Perry, no.

Come to think of it, there was this cute girl in my high school Spanish class named Kristy or some such name, who was so nice and such a Journey fan that she knew stuff like the year that Neil Schon shaved off his moustache. It was an ongoing joke between us. Man, I should have fallen in love with her...wink (But then our wedding song would have been something like "Who's Crying Now?" or "Separate Ways." The ensuing arguments from such questions like "Who programs a tastier ARP: Jerry Goldsmith or Neil Schon?" could have destroyed our "marriage."

Neo, you're unleashing unwanted mid-1980s memories...curse your barbed-wire soul!!!wink

Sorry, Zel ... those trips down memory lane are sometimes treacherous, ain't they?

Considering we hadn't even heard (or at least consciously recognized) Journey (or "Don't Stop Believin'") until THE SOPRANOS' final ep, it's no wonder that admission got a wide-eyed look from a mischievious maiden who said, with twinkle twinkling, "What did you do, sleep through the '80s?"

With eyes wide open, yeah. Recovering from the 70s, actually.

What's that, Babs? Mem'ries, da da da da da da daaaaa ...

Seeing how I entered high school in 1979 it's weird how I loathe music from the 80's (and after) for the most part, and still love 70's music (and before). Journey always sounded so damned plastic to me.

I may be a heathen, though, because the guy in his 50's who lives in the apartment above mine LOVES 80's music and blasts it all the freakin time!

Well, gag us with a flamin' spoon, JaSe, if it's irritating the hell outta you that damn much, we'll turn the gol-durned sound down!

Happy? ... razz

I take the same position as you, JS. I despise most of the music post-1975 and have never been a Rock and/or Roll type of guy. I much prefer Jazz, so-called "Easy Listening" and oh, yeah, movie and TV scores...all of which has made me oh-so popular with the girls, the jocks, and the hoodlums I went to school with. This continues into my adulthood, too.wink

Oh, and now that I've been thinking about it, that girl Kristy said that Journey's "best" song was "Wheel In the Sky", so maybe that negates the topic of this thread, as that girl was even a member of the Journey Fan Club...

I LOVE a lot of 80's music, including the particular type of prog-pop that was popular back then - melodic, larger-than-life and produced by brilliant studio musicians (Asia, Yes, Alan Parsons Project and several others). Journey falls SOMEWHAT into this territory, but unfortunately leans too much on the sugar-infested Meatloaf style to be properly my style. But then again, I've only heard a few of their power ballads, like "Separate Ways", "Any Way You Want It" and yes, "Don't Stop Believing". I'm really keen to learn more about them and familiarize myself with their music, because I have a sneaking suspicion that it's actually closer to my preference than I think.

Check 'em out, Thorski, you might be pleasantly surprised. wink We certainly were.

In fact, a friend recently gifted us with a special ceedee she burned for us of Journey hits ("Don't Stop Believin'" first and foremost, natch) and we were surprised how many we'd actually heard over the years but never identified the group.

Actually, we rather look forward to delving further into their discography (which may fill in the general blank spots of the '80s which, aside from irregular hits now and then - and our consistent love of film scores, which never abated - didn't really register until the end of the decade we became permanent fans of the Narada label) ... smile

"Don't Stop Believin'" was playing on the radio last night on my drive home and despite the fact that I'm not a Journey (the group, that is) person, this song and a few others of theirs is ingrained in my memory, whether I want them to be or not. That group was played on FM radio so much while I was growing up that they became a part of my "unconscious" soundtrack--you could say that corporate radio imposed them on my memories.

I think First Breath and Thor might go koo-koo for the opening synth riff in "Separate Ways." wink

I'm not one for concerts but the Mrs. convinced me to go see the latest incarnation of Journey a couple of years ago and they brought the house down with a great performance.

I had a good time.

Favorite Journey album = "Trial By Fire", perhaps "Still She Cries" from that release was their greatest and most sophisticated song.

The first Journey song i ever heard was 'Only Solutions' from the 'Tron' Soundtrack back in 1982. I can't remember them being played all that much on Australian Radio.

My alltime favorite song by JOURNEY is SEND HER MY LOVE.
It's very sweeping, uplifting and sad at the same time.
I love that slightly off-kilter piano sound, planking out
the title just before Steve Perry sings the title lyrics.
