The fifth thread devoted to the female guests of a classic 60s TV show now begins! "Burke's Law" (1963-1965), a lighthearted mystery show starring Gene Barry as millionaire police Captain Amos Burke, was the first TV show to give us a long list of high-profile guest stars in every episode for us to consider as murder suspects. The show was produced by Aaron Spelling, who of course would repeat the all-star guest cast formula in "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island", and the "Burke's Law" format to murder mystery can also be seen in later shows like "Murder She Wrote" and "Diagnosis Murder."

With the first 16 episodes just released on DVD, this is a good time to start a thread, going from the beginning with episode #1, "Who Killed Holly Howard?"

A fashion supermodel has been found killed, and Captain Burke has among his suspects, William Bendix, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Bruce Cabot, and rather appropriately, Suzy Parker, who was probably the first person to ever be dubbed "supermodel" in her high profile fashion and cosmetics ads in the 1950s.

Suzy's supermodel fame won her a brief film career, but she was mostly in over her head when given big roles in "Kiss Them For Me" and "The Best Of Everything". In a TV episode like this, or in the Twilight Zone episode "Number 12 Looks Just Like You", she was used to much better effect.

Suzy later married actor Bradford Dillman and then retired from acting and modeling. She died in 2003 at age 70.

A typical "Burke's Law" episode would also see the suave Captain Burke in a kind of James Bond-Sylvia Trench scenario before being called off to investigate a crime and episode #1 set that pattern, with Captain Burke's romance with Elizabeth Allen ("Donovan's Reef" and the Twilight Zone episode "The After Hours") interrupted at the beginning, but showing signs of resuming at episode's end.

And one could often spot a number of lesser names in the Yum category who have also been profiled in other threads, such as Kathy Kersh (profiled in the MFU thread).

Episode #2, "Who Killed Mr. X?" concerns the killing of an eccentric movie producer, with a large number of under-contract women well-looked after!

These include suspects such as Elizabeth Montgomery, one year before she gave up these kinds of femme fatale roles for enduring fame as the suburban housewife witch.

Also among the suspects in episode #2 are Barrie Chase, Fred Astaire's dancing partner in a number of acclaimed TV specials, and who also was in "Cape Fear" and "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".

And Dina Merrill.

If this show is peppered with all these guest stars and more, you've convinced me - it's a buy.

Good Gawd, HooRaq!

Talk about a highly enjoyable blast from the past!

Tho first coming to teevee prominence as Dapper Bat Masterson

Amos Burke was a well-nigh perfect fit for his casual elegance and nifty style.

And he impressively morphed into a Broadway star via

No sirree, they definitely don't make 'em like him any more -

and more's the profound pity. YAY, Gene!!! ... wink

Barry's suave elegance also made him perfect as the very first "Columbo" killer in the 1968 TV-movie "Prescription Murder."

Episode #3, "Who Killed Cable Roberts?" concerns the murder of a famous Frank Buck type big-game hunter. Male suspects include Chill Wills and Paul Lynde (it was not uncommon to see "Burke's Law" cast comedians as suspects).

As the not-too-grieving widow of Roberts, in one of her last roles, is Lizabeth Scott.

Zsa Zsa Gabor, provides more comic relief to the episode as the maid who finds the body, mounted to the wall like one of his trophies.

The "Sylvia Trench" role for this episode goes to former Miss Maryland, Charlene Holt.

As "Yum" as Michele Carey is, my favorite lady from EL DORADO has always been Charlene Holt, so it's nice to see her looking so ravishing in another role. She had a great voice, too.

ERIC PADDON:

Barrie Chase also danced in the dream sequence in the original FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (Jimmy Stewart, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine).

That's just as well, as everyone here knows Ms. Carey is MINE! big grin

I've never seen an episode of this show. Most of the 60's shows I'm familiar with had reruns in the 70's, when I was a kid, but this one? Never. Looks entertaining.

I've always found Dina Merrill one of the most all-around attractive women in the world. She seems so intelligent and straightforward in her roles.

I don't remember this ever popping up locally in syndication either, although I have a vague memory of it playing in prime time because my parents watched it. I'm looking forward to this one.

I first recall seeing "Burke's Law" on TV Land in the mid-90s where it was often aired on weekends. Those were the days when cable channels tended to be havens for the rediscovery of lesser-remembered shows from the 50s and 60s that have all but vanished today if they haven't gotten a legitimate DVD release.

The best way to get the new set of "Burke's Law" is to go the on-line route, since I doubt it can be found in most of the traditional outlets.

On to episode #4, "Who Killed Harris Crown?", where the victim has met a horrible death from a sabotaged car, drained of brake fluid.

Suspects in addition to Joan Blondell, Don Rickles, and a couple other gents, include the wife, who is not grieving too much, Juliet Prowse.

And then there's Barbara Eden, two years before her "I Dream Of Jeannie" fame began.

Agreed. I first saw Merrill in THE YOUNG SAVAGES and she was one to watch! Too bad she (or Lee Meriwether) didn't get the chance to replace Barbara Bain for the long haul over on Mission: Impossible.

Zsa Zsa appeared in the previous episode and this week, sister Eva appears as a gossip columnist.

A slightly fading beauty at the time but still elegant, is Ruth Roman ("Strangers On A Train")

And in the hapless "Sylvia Trench" role for the week there's Lola Albright (best known for the TV show "Peter Gunn") who at episode's end breaks her postponed dinner date with Captain Burke to tell him she's running off with an Arab prince!

I always thought Dina had one of the most thankless roles ever written as Laurence Harvey's too understanding wife in "Butterfield 8."

I should be getting to her MI guest spot today.

Episode #5, "Who Killed Julian Buck?" concerns the murder of a famous novelist. The suspect lists include Keenan Wynn, Terry-Thomas and Ed Begley.

And in the female suspect list, there's French-born Corinne Calvet, in the first of three appearances on "Burke's Law."

Also on the suspect list is Rita Moreno, two years after her "West Side Story" Oscar.

Not a suspect is series regular Eileen O'Neil as Policewoman Sgt. Gloria Ames. Captain Burke, despite his ladies man image, is always careful to keep things strictly business with Sgt. Ames! (though like Miss Moneypenny to 007, she no doubt wishes otherwise).
