Long before C.H.I.P.S. and KCBS Helicopter chases, there was the Ziv Television series HIGHWAY PATROL.

Yesterday I got the new MGM DVD set of Season 1. Gorgeous transfers from the camera negatives. Lots of great 50's B-players like Paul Byars, William "Adam 12" Boyett, Gene Roth, Guy Williams, Bing Russell, Richard "Seaview" Bull, Dennis Moore and many others.

And, of course, good old Brod Crawford tough as nails.

A great early procedural police show looking great after 55 years!

10-FOUR!

Manoman, MEM’RIES Department:

Our Dad useta really get a kick outta this show (tho it’s allure was totally lost and unfounded by us);
as to that, now we kinda wonder if it didn’t plant a preliminary seed in his becoming a Philly police
officer for over a quarter-century.

What we DID cotton to considerably was the catchy theme music (almost a lighter, less serious cousin
to “Dragnet”'s overly ominous chords). Tho credited to a Ray Llewellyn - apparently due to non-union rates -
twas composed by none other than David Rose

(pre-Bonanza - tho the latter started the same year, 1959, the former ended).

Dang, Ray, watchit, amigo. Now we know we aren’t the only Immortals around these parts! smile wink big grin

Quinn Martin really got his big break working for Desilu on THE UNTOUCHABLES.

Quinn Martin started out as head of post production at Universal, then went to Work at Ziv Television as a sound editor, and then went to work at Desilu, where he produced a few episodes of "Desilu Playhouse" (NOT just "The Untouchables").

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE

Until, of all things, Knots Landing came along in the late 70s, Highway Patrol was my favorite television show, ever! I just spent all my birthday money on Thriller, Rich Man Poor Man, Dark Night of the Scarecrow and Seasons 1 and 2 of Jake and the Fatman. Had I known this was out...Perhaps I'll get more money, by the time Sunday rolls around.

Oh, how I remember that film! It had a great cast (Crawford, Ralph Meeker, Lon Chaney Jr., Charles Bronson, William Talman, Reed Hadley). For once you get to see Dan Matthews with Mike Hammer, Larry Talbot, Paul Kersey, and Hamilton Burger breaking out of prison. Certainly one of the greats, and has a distinctive score by Paul Dunlap.

The film has shown up on Turner Classic Movies in years past.

According to a March 29, 1956 Daily Variety news item, the Senate Juvenile Delinquency Sub-Committee singled out Big House, U.S.A. "as a picture having too much emphasis on violence and crime," thereby negatively influencing young viewers. In defending the film, producer Aubrey Schenck stated, "more stress should have been placed [by the committee] upon parental control over children susceptible to such films." Schenck also noted that "scaring people is popular entertainment and can be had not only in theatres but in every amusement park and public library."

It seems to me that "Highway Patrol" went through its entire run with only two music cues: the Main Title theme and the intro/suspense theme that was used when the show returned from commercial (and which was occasionally reprised at various points during the episode). The four-note opening phrase of the Main Title was also used as a "stinger' from time to time.

"Big House, U.S.A." is going to be in the first set of releases coming from the new agreement between 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Allied Vaughn that will allow retailers to offer an expanded range of MGM's Limited Edition Collection film titles on DVD via Manufacturing on Demand (MOD).

Great - I hope that THE BLACK SLEEP, another Bel Air picture, will make it out too.

Thanks, Ray, awesome! Loved watching this (in syndication) as a kid in the early sixties on the old Zenith b&w tv, when the vertical hold wasn't acting up. I loved how Matthews talked faster and faster as the action heated up. Dig those '55 Buicks! Thanks!
