In the late 40s when The Vidalian published his ground-breaking

the furor it raised was of such a reactionary magnitude even The New York Times instituted a (book)
black-list against him via their reviewer, one Orville Prescott, who refused to review Mr. Vidal’s
next five efforts in our supposed Paper of Record (except when it offended their sexual sensibilities).

Never one to roll over and meekly acquiesce, Our Man Gore - with admired apologies to Agatha Christie

- rechristened (ah, mayhap not the phrase this self-described “Born Again Atheist” would’ve personally
applied smile) himself and, in the mid-50s, composed a trilogy of mystery novels –

that’ve been reissued. If you wanna expose yourself to an entirely different side of our favorite
gadfly (who has practically no peer verbally flying the written gad big grin), by all means give yourself
a treat and pick up a copy.

And didja know his father made 10-year old Gore make aviation history
of a sort (even slyly coaching him of what to say after he landed)?

“Yes, that was me – wanna make somethin’ of it?” smile

I remember reading somewhere that the character, Brinker Hadley, in John Knowles' "A Separate Peace," was based on Gore Vidal, who also went to Exeter, as I recall.

As someone who attended a similar school, which played against Exeter in any number of athletic events, I can understand the homoerotic undercurrents flowing under the surface. Interestingly, to my knowledge, I'm the only alumnus of Brooks School who's ever come out as a gay man publicly in its almuni news. (On the other hand, though I offered to write an article describing what it was like to be a gay student there, that was refused. I was only allowed to make a statement in the column for the year I graduated, and even that was edited by others. Oh well.)

I have heard from any number of sources that I am not alone, but I may be the only one to have acknowledged it. At least, Gore Vidal was courageous enough to talk about it long before it was fashionable.

As for the New York Times, well, despite its affinity to gather news, it's always been rather prissy on matters of sexual identity. For years, they actually refused to use the word, "gay," insisting only on using "homosexual" for all identification. Now, they act like that never happened.

Hypocrites...

That's a dumb thing to say, even once.

I don't know much about Gore Vidal except some great quotes.

Well, he’s “the SECOND Love of My Life” where the Jewel that’s Joanne is concerned.

wink So if that’s the kinda ‘hell’ his character attracts, we should all be consigned to such classy Heaven.

As he’s a proudly self-proclaimed “Born Again Atheist”, Jeh, you two may have more in uncommon philosophy than you first imagined. big grin Tap into your audodidact tendencies and ferret out more info on him - thankfully, Da global Web is hardly scarce where The Vidalian is substantially concerned.

Especially invaluable is Pittsburgh professor Harry Kloman’s The Gore Vidal Index
via www.pitt.edu/~kloman/vidalframe6.html.

As for that 'hell' bit,
he DID play The Devil opposite Norman Mailer in the mid-80s for a PEN
benefit reading in Noo Yawk of Shaw''s "Don Juan in Hell".

As he joyfully quipped, "it's the best part!" smilewinkbig grin

He spoke at my job a couple of years ago but it was long sold out by the time I had heard. Wish I had the chance to hear him speak; he's an okay author but I really like his interviews.

Notwithstanding the fact you've been a right worthy (and, most importantly, nevah
boring) opponent 'pon more than one mutually-peevish occasion, Jeh,

we'd not venture the invalid proposition you're lacking where informed views are concerned.

'Sides, if there's ANYBODY a walking advertisement gloriously against so-called 'higher education'

where those (his wunnerful phrase) 'scholar squirrels' abound in their general edjimicated idiocy,

he's It. And done damn distinguished work NOT having that modern unholy mytical grail called a Degree (let alone odiously untitled 'tenure'). roll eyesroll eyesroll eyes

Geez, you must have a HELLuva job, Le

It pays the bills. And one time I literally walked straight into Bertie Ahern. (I wasn't watching where I was going and walked straight into his back while reading something in my hands. Didn't know who he was till the next day.)
