It has personal resonance for me because it reminds me of a close friend of mine who took his own life ten years ago. With that painful memory, I had to stay away from the song, though I still love it, it makes me weep. A close second is El Condor Pasa, adapted from a South American melody. I love the song's spirit of transcendence. It's deceptively simple, but a song with more to it than is often thought. Just my view, of course. I never play one of their CDs through, just wait for the odd song to appear on random play. I got the chance to see them live about 6 or 7 years ago, and they were excellent. I'm actually a huge fan of Artie as a solo artist, I've seen him live many times and met him a few times as well. I guess maybe Scarborogh Fair/Canticle, though there are probably a couple dozen S&G songs that I would rank close to it. Paul Simon's songs range from heartbreakingly lonely, to happy and carefree, to insightful glimpses of relationships dead or dying. He has "melancholy" pretty well nailed down, and some of his lyrics are, to my mind, poetry to rival the masters. I'm just put off by songs of "musicians on the road" or lyrics mentioning songcraft. Takes me right out of the song's mood.
