I've listened to these guys for decades and for the longest time my favorite song of theirs was Bookends Theme, a brief, but beautifully sad song. It has personal resonance for me because it reminds me of a close friend of mine who took his own life ten years ago. With that painful memory, I had to stay away from the song, though I still love it, it makes me weep.

A close second is El Condor Pasa, adapted from a South American melody. I love the song's spirit of transcendence. It's deceptively simple, but a song with more to it than is often thought. Just my view, of course.

So what's your favorite of theirs?

My mum has been a fan all her life and I've been listening to them as long as I can remember (now 50)!

My top 3 are:
Bridge Over Troubled Water
The Boxer
So Long Frank Lloyd Wright

"Uh ... w-we're going back to the Pierre.
We're staying at the Pierre ... and we're
gonna meet Jack and Angelica, and have a
drink there, and ... if you'd like to come,
uh, we'd love to have you. And we could just sit and talk ... nothing.
Uh, not a big deal, it's just relax, just be very mellow."

~Paul Simon IS "Tony Lacey." big grin

Agreed that Bookends is brilliant in the simplicity and I love the sadness.

But I think maybe The Boxer is the one for me.

The first song which attracted me ... still my favourite: Sound of Silence

I bought their five CD collection (cheap!) a few years ago to replace a single CD collection of their greatest hits ...

... only to find there're only one or two other songs I enjoy. I never play one of their CDs through, just wait for the odd song to appear on random play. Shame, given they were the closest I came to enjoying pop in my teenage years.

Surely, 'The Boxer'.

Oh, and 'Kathy's Song'. Beautiful lyrics.

I agree. I like most of their music but "The Boxer" towers above them all.

It's difficult to beat the epic power of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", even though it was overplayed in my youth (it was one of the most frequently sung songs in music class).

Surely, 'The Boxer'.

My God, I'd forgotten how powerful and deeply sad it is! So evocative and one of those rare songs that brings you into its world. Simon the storyteller at his best.

It's a tie for me between "The Sounds of Silence" and "Scarborough Fair".

I've been listening to Simon & Garfunkel for years too. I got the chance to see them live about 6 or 7 years ago, and they were excellent. I'm actually a huge fan of Artie as a solo artist, I've seen him live many times and met him a few times as well. I have all his solo work.

This is a favourite Simon & Garfunkel song for me...

So hard to pick just one. I guess maybe Scarborogh Fair/Canticle, though there are probably a couple dozen S&G songs that I would rank close to it. Paul Simon's songs range from heartbreakingly lonely, to happy and carefree, to insightful glimpses of relationships dead or dying. He has "melancholy" pretty well nailed down, and some of his lyrics are, to my mind, poetry to rival the masters. "Old Friends," "The Boxer," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "America"...just too many.

Very hard to choose, but I'd have to say "I am a Rock."

"Homeward Bound", though "The Boxer" comes in second.

While "Homeward Bound" and "Kathy..." are fine songs--and they really are, no doubt. I'm just put off by songs of "musicians on the road" or lyrics mentioning songcraft. Takes me right out of the song's mood. If I were a musician it'd no doubt be different.

"Cecilia". I have no idea why, other than that it's insanely catchy.

(Does that make me superficial?)

That song applies to 99% of the FSM board! ("I've got my scores/and my/ DVDs to protect me") wink

I think that "Mrs. Robinson" has now surpassed "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to become the duo's best-known song.

"Best-known" perhaps, but best-loved? I doubt that.

I like all the S&G's work, but "Sounds Of Silence" and "Hazy Shade Of Winter" hold a special place... very poetic and kind of edgy. Also, "Kathy's Song" for its simple beauty.

I certainly prefer "Bridge" to "Robinson", but I haven't heard the former on the radio in many years.
