John, what on earth are you doing still reading this paper? Don't tell me you're homesick for WGC? Not really. I look at it now and again. I still have ties there. My brother still lives in WGC.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet combo pack release of director Edgar Wright's The World's End, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike, David Bradley and Pierce Brosnan. The approaching-apocalypse sci-fi comedy arrives on Blu-ray on November 19th. Synopsis: Twenty years after their first epic pub crawl attempt, the "five musketeers" -- Gary King (Pegg), Peter Page (Marsan), Oliver "O-Man" Chamberlain (Freeman), Steven Prince (Considine) and Andy Knightley (Frost) -- reunite in their home town to complete the ultimate challenge: one night, five friends, twelve bars, a boozy quest on which only the strongest will survive. But after a bizarre series of encounters with the out-of-this-world locals, they soon realize that reaching their final pub, The World's End, may be the least of their troubles. They're having the time of their lives, ready to take on the world… but tonight they may have to save it. For my birthday I was given the Three Flavours Cornetto bluray set - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. The first two replace much-watched DVDs, but the last was new to us, not having seen the film at the cinema. As implied above, some of our interest was from having lived at one of the main locations some years ago, Welwyn Garden City. It was great to see some familiar places - the fountain on Parkway and The Cork (as it is now) on Howardsgate as one of the 12 pubs on the boys' golden mile crawl, and the John Lewis (former Welwyn Stores) car park - funny what you get nostalgiac for! It was odd to see WGC cut with scenes from Letchworth, as the two places are quite different in character, despite both being garden cities. It's too early to rank the film against the other two - I'll need to see it a time or two more before I do that - but I doubt it'll supplant Hot Fuzz as my favourite. It may well creep ahead of Shaun. Lots of extras yet to watch, but the out-takes reel was amusing rather than side-splitting. They looked to have enjoyed themselves making the film, as you'd expect. Although Gary King (Pegg) was indeed pretty unlikeable, he was a more complex character than anticipated, which added some depth. A nicely-conceived and unexpected post-climax sequence added to the enjoyment and left a good taste. TG

TG JonJohnson and I have previously commented on this TG, but the old Welwyn Stores - when it was independently owned - had an amazing soundtrack selection in its record department. I found some pretty obscure titles way back in the late 70s.
