John, what on earth are you doing still reading this paper?

Don't tell me you're homesick for WGC?

Not really. I look at it now and again. I still have ties there. My brother still lives in WGC.

Anyone seen the film yet?

Yes...opening night (local boy starring, so gotta be done!) - thoroughly enjoyed...and in places almost Coke-spittingly funny...

Anyone seen the film yet?

I have. It was... ok. Pegg's character is totally unlikeable throughout the film which kind of blights it.

I much prefer Paul. Now that is funny. "Oooh, Marmite!".

So compared to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz how does it rank?

Is it more comedy or action?

Comedy. I'd put it a little behind Hot Fuzz. Still, I enjoyed it very much. I hadn't seen the trailer so the main story came as a big surprise. Being contemporary with most of the cast helps.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet combo pack release of director Edgar Wright's The World's End, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike, David Bradley and Pierce Brosnan. But after a bizarre series of encounters with the out-of-this-world locals, they soon realize that reaching their final pub, The World's End, may be the least of their troubles. For my birthday I was given the Three Flavours Cornetto bluray set - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. The first two replace much-watched DVDs, but the last was new to us, not having seen the film at the cinema.

As implied above, some of our interest was from having lived at one of the main locations some years ago, Welwyn Garden City. It was great to see some familiar places - the fountain on Parkway and The Cork (as it is now) on Howardsgate as one of the 12 pubs on the boys' golden mile crawl, and the John Lewis (former Welwyn Stores) car park - funny what you get nostalgiac for! It was odd to see WGC cut with scenes from Letchworth, as the two places are quite different in character, despite both being garden cities.

It's too early to rank the film against the other two - I'll need to see it a time or two more before I do that - but I doubt it'll supplant Hot Fuzz as my favourite. It may well creep ahead of Shaun. Lots of extras yet to watch, but the out-takes reel was amusing rather than side-splitting. They looked to have enjoyed themselves making the film, as you'd expect. Although Gary King (Pegg) was indeed pretty unlikeable, he was a more complex character than anticipated, which added some depth. A nicely-conceived and unexpected post-climax sequence added to the enjoyment and left a good taste.

JonJohnson and I have previously commented on this TG, but the old Welwyn Stores - when it was independently owned - had an amazing soundtrack selection in its record department. I found some pretty obscure titles way back in the late 70s.

Oh my God, yes. The ending wasn't a very good idea, either.

It's no HOT FUZZ, that's for damn sure.

I've just interrogated Mrs TG about the record department. She was living down there already when I arrived from the north to take your jobs and your women. The then pre-Mrs TG does remember the record department from the early 80s, but not of course the soundtrack section, given that she's normal in more respects than we.
